GazetteOnline.com : Associated Press, Phil Steele both picking Arizona over Iowa

I think they were just saying Foles would be more experienced than he was last year's Iowa/Arizona game, when he wasn't even the starter--not that he is more experienced than Stanzi. But I agree with your final score. Iowa by double digits.

Once again, the pollsters have been seduced by flashy numbers put up against weak competition. At least Iowa has a win over a BCS conference team. While I'm amazed that the only match-up of ranked teams this weekend is being completely overlooked by the national media (Gameday will broadcast from Auburn/Clemson), that also might help to explain why so many pollsters are smelling upset. Despite being #9 in the nation, nobody is watching the Hawkeyes. On paper, Arizona looks pretty good right now. But Iowa's win over ISU was as complete a throttling as you're likely to see, and I'd wager the Cyclones could beat The Citadel and Toledo with ease. I suppose all we can hope for is a solid win by the Hawks that gets them some more cred with the suits. Also: The Hawkeyes scoff at your "home field advantage."

GazetteOnline.com : Iowa City bank robbed

This is outrageous. Any bank, no matter its size, can get robbed. It sounds like the teller did exactly what he/she was supposed to do, which is keep the customers safe and get enough descriptive info for a police report. Get a grip. You have a lot of gall to insult someone who probably had the scare of his/her life.

GazetteOnline.com : Hlas column: Iowa scores very well in Big Ten's football division set-up

Exactly. I think Nebraska fans should be thrilled: It's a tough schedule, but you get every marquee team, and all your regional opponents, with the Iowa game hopefully in a permanent place at the end of the season. It's going to be an exciting first season for the Huskers. Tough, but awesome. Looking forward to a great series.

GazetteOnline.com : The Contingency -- Running back

I think you accidentally repeated the Minnesota stats, Marc: Wegher had 15 carries for 26 yards. Still, I'm surprised that Robinson didn't notch a 100-yard game after Michigan St. Wegher really came on strong toward the end of the season, and truly shined in the Orange Bowl (with a huge 7.1 YPC average). I know it will all come down to how these guys perform in fall camp, and how Ferentz and O'Keefe decide to utilize these three very different but equally capable backs, but in my mind Wegher has to have an advantage based on his end-of-season performance.

GazetteOnline.com : POLL: Where do you want the Big Ten 2011 football title game to be held?

If it's outdoors, it won't be in prime-time. I'm all for Big Ten weather, but if the Championship game is about late-season exposure, it would be in the best interests of the conference to have a night game, like the SEC and Big 12. What with the Big Ten's "No-Outdoor-Night-Games-After-October" rule, if it ain't in a dome, say hello to a 3 p.m. kickoff.

GazetteOnline.com : Recent arrests aside, life skills coach seems to work for Iowa football

The thing is, most of these players are people of pretty normal judgment and character. Some, like Stanzi, display outstanding judgment and character. Overall, Iowa does a pretty good job of finding good kids who work hard. The problem isn't that these players are a bunch of crooks and thugs, as many critics of the football program like to characterize them. (Excepting, of course, those notable instances of rape, credit card fraud, etc.) In actuality, for the most part they are normal kids making normal kid mistakes. Should we hold athletes to a higher standard? Sure. They represent the university, and many of them are getting a free education. But they're no more likely to run afoul of the law than the average UI student. And plenty of those students are attending college on the taxpayers' dime. Drunk driving is indefensible, but it's pretty unfair to suggest that these players are questionable human beings because they made a college-kid mistake.

GazetteOnline.com : My No. 8 Game in the Ferentz Era: Iowa State, 2002

GazetteOnline.com : 10 rookies -- OT Markus Zusevics

I'm not really worried about Reiff. He definitely seems like he learned his lesson and is on the up-and-up. He just happened to have a particularly spectacular incident shortly after arriving on campus. In fact, given the team's recent stretch of upstanding behavior, I'm not worried about any players in particular. However, these things do happen, and sometimes it winds up being the players (Calloway last year, for example) you'd least expect. Basically, while our roster is solid at most positions, we do lack depth. And in spite of our Next Man In tradition, losing a couple of key players (Stanzi last year, for example) can severely hurt the team's chances for success. And with the O-Line, any roster shuffling could severely impede the group's cohesion and thus the team's overall chance for success. I only mentioned Reiff in jest. I wasn't trying to single out anybody, just pointing out that a bad decision here or there could make a huge difference in overall line play, particularly early on in the season.

I'm glad you pointed out the weightroom time, Marc. Even without on-field experience, 4 years in Iowa's S&C program is invaluable. Given Iowa's track record on O-Linemen (5 draftees in 2 years, as you mentioned), that's definitely a confidence-booster. Another reassuring fact is that we had separation during the spring. With the starting 5 essentially in order, they can focus on gelling as a unit. I've noticed that when we don't have a consistent lineup, regardless of how good the individual players are, we usually struggle in the first few games. Last year's OL carousel was a perfect example. Now let's just hope those guys stay healthy and keep their noses clean (I'm lookin' at you, Reiff).
