STUDY BY THE CENTER FOR INJURY CONTROL: During the study interval (12 months in Memphis, 18 months in Seattle, and Galveston) 626 shootings occurred in or around a residence. This total included 54 unintentional shootings, 118 attempted or completed suicides, and 438 assaults/homicides. Thirteen shootings were legally justifiable or an act of self-defense, including three that involved law enforcement officers acting in the line of duty. For every time a gun in the home was used in a self-defense or legally justifiable shooting, there were four unintentional shootings, seven criminal assaults or homicides, and 11 attempted or completed suicides.

Hmmm, let's see, free up much needed prison space and raise money from taxes on pot sales (An innocent weed, that makes most people a little giddy and happy) - I'm not understanding what the hold-up of legalization is. To say it's a "gateway drug" is absurd...it's no more so than alcohol. I don't smoke often, maybe once a year, but I'd much rather be around someone who is smoking pot than drinking. The drinkers often get violent and make stupid decisions. Pot smokers generally laugh a lot or get paranoid (in which case they will certainly not get behind the wheel.)
You should try reading the rest of the thread-- but anyway, I'd like to know what country gun ownership is "required" for non-criminals? Please tell me.
Bravo! This kind of news makes me want to donate to keep the ball rolling! Very exciting news.
Quote: "If you treat people badly, they will behave badly. Anyone can be a citizen if we treat them well, respect them, and give them challenges and demands."Oeyvind Alnaes, Norway-prison governor.
Fact: In Norway the prisons are what many would consider "plush" and many men obtain professional qualifications while in the prison system.
Fact: In Norway, there are no death sentences — or even life sentences. The maximum jail term anyone can receive is 21 years, including for murder.
It's difficult for me to agree with this, i get angry and want these people that hurt others locked away for life. But thats not how they do it in Norway.
In the UK (population c. 60.5m) there were 765 reported incidents of murder for 2005-6 (Home Office, undated) – a rate of about 1.1 per 100,000.
In the US (population c. 298.5m) there were an estimated 16,137 homicides in 2004 (FBI, 2006a) – a rate of about 5.4 per 100,000. Of these, 10,654 were carried out with guns (FBI, 2006b).
"Looking at both men and women, over the past 20 years, on average only two percent of the homicides committed with handguns in the United States were deemed justifiable or self-defense homicides by civilians. To put it in perspective, more people are struck by lightning each year than use handguns to kill in self-defense."-FBI Supplementary Homicide Report data
Thanks SUBGT97- I just looked it up, and here's what I found. :)
I agree with you, and I'm shocked at the amount of hostility shown in these comments from these pro-guns. This is my first comment, and I got all these thumb downs and I'm only trying to make a point that SOMETHING needs to be done...it's out of hand. I know it's not realistic to "get rid of guns" altogether. I wish it was that easy. Just so you know, you're getting a thumbs up from me. I agree I was too simplistic in my first comment.
