Part 3: For instance, saying that feminists don't oppose the stonings, even support it -- blantantly untrue. I believe a lot of feminists want to hear the voice of reason, but this is not a reasonable thing to say. I understand that it is scary to be out there, I was out there too for a while, and it is ugly stuff. And I didn't have the backing of the right or anyone else. Is there some unconscious bargaining going on with the right, that is, make sweeping anti-feminist assertions, and the right will love you enough to back you? That is not principled either. I'm all for accountability. But that crosses into bashing, and defeats what I believe is part of your purpose - to persuade feminists to see the situation more clearly, and take principled stands against both racism and anti-Semitism, to work with allies such as yourself to end fascism in the Middle East. They aren't going to respond when you slander them. A nuanced, fair, and accurate portrayal would persuade a lot more to join ranks in your efforts.

Part 2: Add to that the fact that feminism is prioritizing anti-poverty and anti-racism, almost as formula, so the poorer and the darker are victims and powerless and right. Not logical, and not principled, rather pseudo-principled, but this isn't in itself anti-Semitism. I think anti-Semitism is one factor, but not the biggest one. The bigger factors are lack of information, ignorance, and formula thinking, which characterizes any movement, certainly the right as well as the left. When I was putting myself out there as a lone voice in the early 2000s, I did get responses from people who wanted to learn more, and appreciated me speaking out (they were the minority, but a start). I wish Chesler didn't paint feminists with such a broad brush. It is alienating.

Part 1: I was involved in the feminist movement and the left until the early 2000s, and dropped away, though not quietly, as a result of the very scary anti-Semitism I was encountering at every turn, on every email list. I don't think Chesler is overstating how bad it is. However, I think she is painting feminists with too broad a brush. I think this is unfortunate, since she has many important things to say these days. My impression was that people did respond, quietly at first, when I put out information that wasn't available in the media. The media, both mainstream and left, has cultivated this anti-Semitism. I'd be a lot more appalled by Israel if I had to just rely on these information sources.
