No need to apologize! I'm sorry, I didn't mean to seem like it was something to be upset about, it's such an easy mistake. Mostly I just enjoy the stories my brother tells about his students, lol.

I'm going to be /that/ pedantic weirdo, but it's Killing Mr. Griffin. The only reason I know that and it's important to me is that my maiden name was Griffin, and my brother is a Mr. Griffin who teaches high school, and it's always great fun when his students happen across that book in the library. I know what you mean about being weirdly sad when authors pass whose work you read and enjoyed when you were younger, though! I only just a few weeks ago found out that Barbara Parks had died, two and a half years after the fact, and I was so upset. :(

Oops, just realized my post up there should have identified the pregnant wife as Stephanie's mom and the pregnant girlfriend as Chad's mom/the OP, in what I initially thought was going on. I mean, I could maybe see the grandparents engaging in that type of favoritism if their son really had been cheating on his wife and gotten both the wife and girlfriend pregnant around the same time -- disapproval of Chad's mom and of their son's relationship with Chad's mom could turn into resentment toward Chad. They'd still be assholes for taking it out on a blameless kid, but there would at least be a straight line you could draw from A to B. But given what's actually going on -- that they're not only favoring their biological grandkid over their step-grandkid, but actively promoting issues between the two kids? That's just utter assholery without even a semi-understandable reason.

I also misunderstood at first what was going on in that story, but I read it as "my son [with my husband]" and "my husband's daughter with his ex-wife," so I thought that 16 or so years ago, the husband had left his pregnant wife (Chad's mom) for his pregnant girlfriend (the OP). Then she said she didn't understand why his family had never liked her, and I was like, "uhh, I have a reason..." Then I figured out what was really going on.

YES! Also, he said that they had made plenty of memories together, even though they had never dated, which to me sounds like they were, oh I don't know, friends??? Which means that she did "give [him] the time of day," in that she wasn't ignoring him, or acting like he was beneath her, or dismissing him without really taking the time to get to know him (not that she would owe him that, either, but still). Just, ugh.

"Australians tend to be very good at the American accent, but some have tell-tell signs." My personal favorite example of this is anytime Portia de Rossi says "anything," which somehow comes out sounding like "enneh-thing" and is delightful.

As a fellow white lady, I enjoy seeing the "white tears" mugs and whatnot in the same vein as the "male tears" ones, but I wouldn't personally feel comfortable buying one, probably for the same reasons you're questioning it (co-optation!). There's an article by Jazmine Hughes that an acquaintance posted on facebook a while back that really made me think about my relationship to these kind of jokes, as a white person. It also includes the fabulous line, “White people be like ‘white people be like,’ but they be the white people that white people be like!!!!”

I have never had a surgery like that, so I have no comforting, first-hand stories, but I come bearing gifs! I have a cute kitten I have Adele and Miranda Hart cracking up together and being adorable (and if that interests you, then I would recommend this old episode of the Graham Norton show, which is basically my favorite) I have Leslie telling Ann Perkins about all her breakups, plus Ron Swanson dancing, to make you laugh Speaking of dancing and making you laugh, I have Angel and Wesley I have Cookie Monster being super happy, to remind you how happy you're going to be once your mystery pain is gone And I have lots of comforting hugs Good luck! I hope all goes well with your surgery.

The Toast : An Alternative Ending to Castle

I just bought and downloaded season 1 a few weeks ago based on seeing it talked about here, and I liked it quite a bit! It wasn't my favorite show ever (among current shows, that title might be tied between iZombie and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend), and there were a few things I wish were different (like, there's at least one character where they drop hints that she has a really interesting backstory, but then they never really do anything with that, which is kind of frustrating), but I don't think that the hype around Shiri Appleby's and Constance Zimmer's performances was unwarranted -- they're both amazing. And just seeing a female anti-hero in the vein of both of those characters is wonderful and interesting. I would say that, even though one of the co-creators used to be a producer for the Bachelor, the show doesn't feel like a super-honest tell-all about what it's "really" like behind the scenes -- it's a bit too soapy for that -- and I think if that's what you're looking for, you might be disappointed. But as a (somewhat cynical) character study of the types of people who might get involved with a show like that, including the behind-the-scenes people, the female contestants, and the guy himself, I think it was incredibly well-done. Except for Jeremy.

"Callie and Brandon from the Fosters" OMG YES, I cannot even count how many times I have yelled at Callie to stop smushing his face with her face. Telling Brandon to knock it off would be useless, as Brandon is useless. Can we add Rachel and Jeremy from UnREAL to the list? Because I don't even understand that. Like, Jeremy is the human version of plain oatmeal made with water instead of milk.
