Race Relations Project : The tyranny of radical Muslims...

I understand what she is saying and agree with her husband. Her husband is one Muslim and he may or may not agree with some things of his religion. Just like I don't agree with some things in my religion. I think its unfortunate if people are targeting him just because he is Muslim and people think he is evil as Bin Ladin is. Her husband didn't decided to be Muslim and her husband isn't friends with Bin Ladin, so why should it matter what religion he is. I feel this situation is blown out of proportion, who cares what religion we are and what color skin we have, or what color hair and eyes we have. We all have hearts that are beating and mind that have opinions but when all said and done, we are all the same. We're living here on Earth for a short time so why have all the extra unnecessary crap added to it.

Race Relations Project : Christian Invaders - the turnaround

This lecture really opened my eyes to many things. Not only did I learn a lot about this topic during the hour an a half but i also was provoked to learn more about what is truly going on. I thought Sam did a great job leading up to this lecture talking about ethnocentrism the previous class and and interpreting in into the lecture last Thursday. I think it was a great idea to have us be in the mind set that we are Muslims and see what they are seeing from their point of view. That hit hard. What if that was us living like that? I never had even thought of it like that. After attending this lecture the war in the Middle East has a new perspective for me. I am not only seeing it from an American point of view. Seeing all the clips also blew my mind. Especially the clip from the guy that has Sam listed as one of the 100 hundred most dangerous professors. His video was intense, and by the end of it I had tears in my eyes and the chills. It made everything clearer and made me nervous and scared for the future. This class made me a little uncomfortable but that's the point, right? I was touched when learning and seeing our soldiers. I think this hit close to me because one of my best childhood friends who also happens to be my neighbor graduates boot camp for the marines this week. Thinking about the fact that he will most likely go over sees and fight in our war and see the way the soldiers acted good and bad made me also get the chills. What really blew my mind is that their media is interpreting this as us trying to convince them to be Christian. I had never even thought of that. I mean some of the things that are said by our political figures, such as Sarah Palin shouldn't have been said. I feel the use of 'god' should not be brought into this subject, especially now since they think we are trying to invade them as Christians. Another fact that blew my mind when was the family asked the American to take their picture and bring it home and show their friends and family. That absolutely shocked me. I could never even imagine going to their country and asking them to take my family and I's picture than showing it to their friends and family. Their customs are so different than ours and its so interesting to learn about this and see things from a different perspective not just a college student in America. Sam was definitely not lying when he said this lecture is going to blow your mind because it did just that. I am so glad that I am taking this class because it is opening my eyes to a whole other world.

Race Relations Project : Want to Learn Chinese (Mandarin)?

Growing up in a small down in Pennsylvania when going into high school I had to choose between taking German and Spanish. Even though I am 100 percent German, I decided to take Spanish because I felt that it would be more beneficial. I struggled so bad ninth and tenth grade while learning Spanish. I had absolutely no interest in learning a forgien language which made it that much harder as well. If you asked me today, five years later I can tell you about three Spanish words so obviously it didn't help me at all in life. I feel taking a second language will really only help you if you use it frequently and stay on top of it. If I wasn't a full time student taking 18 credits as well as working a part time job and had absolutely nothing else to worry about, I might consider learning a second language. But learning Chinese would most like never cross my mind. I feel learning Chinese would beA an extremely difficult language to learn. Due to the fact that they have different vowels, and don't have the same sounds as English. So it would just make it extremely difficult to learn. But then again if i had nothing on my plate and had all the free time in the world, I could focus on the language differences and put the effort into learning this unique language. I would also not learn this language because of the Chinese population. I do not really plan on traveling after graduation, and residing in Pennsylvania somewhere. And after seeing the guest speaker last week and the demographic maps he presented to our class I would most definitely not learn Chinese. This gentleman showed a map of all the counties in Pennsylvania and most populated areas of Asians are Centre county and Pittsburgh. Centre county due to Penn State! And Pitt being because of the medical resources there. The way I feel now, I do not want to live in the State College area or Pittsburgh when I am older and raising a family so therefore learning this language seems a little out of the picture for me. I am going to school for Speech Pathology and I am sure it would look absolutely incredible on my resume that I know Chinese. But really? Is all the practice and education and time put into learning this language really worth it just for a job that will always be in demand. Maybe if I was going to school for International business or something that I would actually be interacting with Chinese people it may be a little more useful. I hope i am not sound like a debbie downer, I mean learning Chinese would be an awesome characteristic of an individual and would definitely part yourself from a numerous amount of individuals.

Race Relations Project : What about the men?

I definitely think males also have to conform to society, just not near as much as females. I feel like there is a lot more pressure for females to look like this, do this with your hair, wear this, do your make up like this. Whereas for males I feel like they're not under as much pressure from society to dress certain, and they obviously don't have to worry about hair or makeup. I feel like males are under the pressure to have a muscular body but if they don't I feel like they don't care as much as females. I mean every magazine cover is a female that is a size 2 so I definitely feel that adds more pressure for girls. Maybe myself, being a female i don't exactly understand the pressure a male in todays society feels. It would be nice to hear from a male how they feel about the pressure from society because I know as a girl it's super annoying and stressful.

Race Relations Project : What if we got rid of welfare?

If our government eliminated welfare all together it probably would cause a lot more problems in the system. And I'm sure the government has other issues to be working out right now. I personally feel that welfare should be related. I understand many individuals are born into the welfare system and can not help it but I feel that the government should set up a program to help get these people back on their feet. I think I am so against welfare because I have grown up to see my parents and family members work forty hours a week. My dad owns his own business and as the economy as gotten bad I see my dad working more hours a day and working weekends. I respect hard work and my parents made me get a job right when i turned 16. I feel that parents should instill this characteristic into their children at an early age. At the age of 16 I got a job at a local grocery store back at home. I have seen a numerous amounts of different people during those years. But, the one thing that gets on my nerves so bad is when people who are on food stamps buy the most expensive steak on the shelf. Then after they purchase all this luxurious food they then proceed to order cigerattes. I don't know for some reason this gets on my nerves so bad.

Race Relations Project : I really want to know also...

I think before coming into soc 119, I had a sense of the things Sam has mentioned but I feel I have learned a tremendous amount taking this class. It's a nice break from all of my core classes. On the first day of class we took that quiz to test our knowledge about our society. The next class when we reviewed the answers I was surprised by the majority of them! I feel that this class has changed my opinion on race, somewhat. I was taken back by the fact that the little girls and boys wanted to play with white dolls instead of black dolls. That right there changed my opinion on black and white people. My opinion also changed when learning about Native Americans. I thought Native Americans were hard working respectable, but after what we learned I now don't respect Native Americans as much as I use too. That's kind of harsh to say but that's how i feel. I also feel that this class has made a huge difference in my way of thinking. I never knew there were different steps if identifying race and now that I know their are and they are different for black and white people, I take a new approach to when people say something racist, or something about race. I think this class is super interesting, for example seeing the lady living in the trailer, walking ten miles to her job at Burger King. Also, the books we have to read. They may not be the most interesting things ever but they are full of such great facts that I probably would have never known without taking this class.

Race Relations Project : Those Dolls Say Alot About Who We Are

When we watched this video in class I couldn't believe what I was seeing. If it were young white children and they picked the white doll over the black one, I could understand a little more. But i was astonished with I saw the young black boys and girls pick the white baby doll. That was an eye opener for me but what really made me think 'oh my god, is this really happening' was the kids reactions to why they wanted to play with the white doll over the black doll. I would have thought that the black children would have wanted to play with the black baby dolls. I never really thought about this issue and when I do its crazy. I wish my parents would have exposed me to issues like this growing up, and because I don't want my children in this box, I am going to educate them on issues like this as they are growing up. I want my children to realize at an early age that every race and individual is equal. I'm going to buy my little girl all kinds of dolls and i'll buy my little boy different kinds of GI Joe's. So they know there is a difference and they become aware at an early age that we're all equal and shouldn't be separated in any ways. I feel like I was brought up in this box that I'm white so i should play with white dolls. I feel like our society has a odd way of going about things. Like, shouldn't our parents want us to grow up playing with other race dolls. So we are aware at an early age of things that we become aware of later on. I feel as if this video affected a lot of our class, and hopefully this video will keep spreading and all different people will see the outcome of this video! And we will feel empowered to not keep our children in this box. We'll want to expand their horizons and not have them question are we all equal when they are old enough to understand race and complex issues like this. I feel that we need to start educating everyone about things like this because its not fair that young black children want to be like white people. They want to be like this because according to them black people are 'bad' and 'ugly'. I just find this topic so distrubing and crazy! I know i will share this video with as many people as possible so they are also aware of this ridiculous issue our children are facing. I think it is important for young children to know that we are all equal no matter what color our skin is, what our hair looks like, what our eyes look like, where our family came from, where we came from. Where all equal dispite having different skin color.

Race Relations Project : Flip the Script for a Moment

I think ethnocentrism, is a great topic to talk about especially in a soc class. I mean obvious 'bleeding' isn't something we all want to talk about or hear about daily. But, Sam was right. This is a natural occurance, just like your stomach growling, hair growing, and nails growing! It is disgusting to think about this bodily function but theres nothing wrong with it. The post above mine made a great point, making people uncomfortable in class starts a great conversation topic. Example, this topic. I think its a great thing to make people uncomfortable and talk about issues that not everyone thinks about, or feels comfortable with. But because of the uncomfortable feeling it makes the topic a lot more interesting and makes people learn and realize new things that they would have never even ran across before. Im eager to see what else sam brings up that makes the class feel awkward and the great conversations that will stir from it.

Race Relations Project : Nothing About the Census is Easy

I feel in a way that this is going a little too far. I mean yes, older color of people are used to the being referred as 'negro' but times are changing. Which they should understand. There is always going to be change. Now the new work is 'black'. This is the census, all they are trying to do is take a total in America, they are not trying to hurt anyone by referring to them as 'black' or 'negro'. I could maybe understand some people getting offended if this was something sacred to their family, or something of value. But it's the census! Whoever created the census was not trying to stir up an ongoing debate between 'negro' and 'black'. Maybe i feel this way because I am white and I have no been faced with his dilemma, but to me I feel that it is going a little too far, and shouldn't effect people as much as it is.

Race Relations Project : What happens to multiracial people?

I just asked the same question in a previous blog entry I just posted. How do 'brown' people feel about these issues? What's their stand on this issue between black and white people. I think we should start polling the brown people and see what their responses are. I would find it interesting to see what they would have to say. Would they side more with the black race or the white race? I don't even know what 'brown' people consider themselves in these polls, do they answer under white or black or do they not even answer? I never really thought of this topic before, but I find it strange how we leave them out on posing their opinion on these intense topics. They obviously must have an opinion about these topics because they're in on this too. Somehow we should figure out a way to incorporate their feelings into the class as well as everyone else.

Race Relations Project : Is anyone else getting this stuff?

I agree with this post. I feel after reading the first eight chapters by Lauren Mulvey's book, 'Making Peace Between Our Colors', I have a little bit of a better understanding about the colors and what is going on between us. I'm anxious to finish the rest of the book to see what else Laurie has to say. I think Laurie is brave for presenting all her different experiences with race and writing them down to form a book. She definitely gets her point across and makes us all feel that we could overcome this issue. I would think that after we all read these books, listened to Sam's lectures and watched the videos Sam presents in class, we would all have a different view on race than we did when we first walked into Soc 119. But I feel that even though we are presented with such good material to justify that race is just a color, we are not moving past it.

Race Relations Project : Does this rudeness thing cut both ways?

I agree with this question a 100%. I find this to be interesting and disgusting at the same time. I think this texting our answers is a great new thing to be used during class, but is it going to cause too much of a controversy. I feel when its white peoples turn to answer the questions about race we answer them legitimately but when its the other way around black people just make it a joke. Things being said such as, 'orange', 'ed hardy', 'uggs' 'north faces' and 'being white means going to Dave Matthews band concerts' by the way, what does that even mean? The majority of Daves band is black, but good one. Even though this is all true and made me laugh, I still think we need to grow up. Race isn't based on what one wears or what the fashion is it goes much deeper than that. I think its real interesting that before we had this texting thing and people could identify who was making the comment none of the 'real' stuff was coming out. There was barely anything said that would offend anyone of either race, but now that the race is hidden, we really attack each other. I guess that's the point of this texting thing to get what we really feel out into the open but in another way I feel that were in college and we should be a little more mature than this. Race doesn't rely on what we wear or what the 'in' this is. Race is sooo much more than that. Before this class I really thought we had outgrown racism. I mean, I knew it still existed but not to this extent. I didn't know that we still hated on each other for ridiculous things. And I didn't know it was this bad. In a way I feel like I have been lied to or naive, one of the two. I knew there was still a line there in between black and white people but I had no idea it was still this deep and so much hate and animosity still existed. But I'm happy i found out how things really hard instead of going along through life thinking we're just one big happy world that loves each other. Reading the comments above I realized that no matter what there is always going to be a double standard between everyone and everything. Which is sad to justify everything with but its the truth. Thinking about all this what do 'brown' people have to say? How come its just 'black' and 'white'. I'd find it interesting to know what brown people think of of this whole thing between black and white people and where the stand in it.

Race Relations Project : This Is Getting to Be Too Much

This is crazy! And that’s not the only thing to describe it! Outrageous, immature, irresponsible are a few other words to describe this topic. Further we get into this class more I realize how racism still exists in so many aspects of not only the world but throughout our own country of the United States. I would like to think that people enrolled in college are above these disrespectful actions, like hanging a Neuse. What makes this topic at a college located in San Diego even more outrageous is that because of stereotypes we would all presume that it would have been a white individual who did this act of racism, but it reality it was a minority who hung this Neuse in a public place located on campus. I feel as if these actions are childish and immature and should be taken care of in a mature manner, and these individuals at this school should realize what they are doing is absolutely ridiculous.

Race Relations Project : Prom or No Prom: Just Don't Let the Queer Students Dance Together

I feel this is absolutely ridiculous! In today's society, it is better to be open, unique, do what you want- not because its 'cool', and here is a perfect example of someone acting as herself and she is denied. It's a high school prom, something every senior should experience with someone close to them, even if it is someone of the same sex. What kind of 'lesson' is the school board trying to prove on this one? To me, they are not proving anything only that they are still living in the 70's and need to realize that what they are doing is outrageous and ridiculous. I feel that they are trying to keep the real world out of their school, and keep what is really happening hidden from their students. One huge topic most of us learned in high school is that gay and lesbian couples are acceptable, and everyone is different and everyone should be treated equally and they are the same as different sex couples. The idea that the school is prohibiting prom just because of this issue is showing a lot to the students. They want the students to be closed minded, but what happens when the students enter college. They'll be exposed to a whole bunch of things that they have never witnessed because their high school was naive and had to pretend that certain issues don't exist, which will just cause chaos when the students are presented with issues like this. I remember my high school prom and every detail sticks out in my head as if it happened a few weeks ago. It is something special and that everyone in high school should experienced. There was a large number of gay and lesbian couples that attended my high school, and I come from a smaller area. These couples did attend our prom and took it serious and special just like everyone else, but no one looked twice or thought it was out of the ordinary seeing these same sex couples participate in this school sponsored event. There comes a point in our lives that we have to accept that everyone else is different, but if someone who is different is like us in every other way and deserves the same rights and respect that we do. I really can't believe that our society has overcome a race and gender issue, this being proven in the last election with a black male and female running for president. And we all know that we have a black male as our president running our country, but we cant overcome the gay and lesbian issue. Something that seems so small in our society can't even be overcame makes me disgusted. Whoever is responsible of making this decision really needs to read a book or watch the news, and realize that gay and lesbian couples are absolutely no different than same sex couples.

I think this is a great thing! Not only for Natalie herself, but for the school and the town the school is located in. This is a great accomplishment in may ways and should be recognized. Natalie has grown up involved with the sport of football and has worked hard to become a coach at the local high school. Hopefully she has support behind her one hundred percent, from the community and everyone who has heard this story. Hopefully everyone gives her the respect she deserves. I feel this will be tough for Natalie but as long as she works hard and stays focused and does not let the negative comments get to her she will do excellent and be a great coach. This is a huge step for women, and if Natalie is successful it will show that times are really changing and that women are capable to do just as much as men and women can do it just as well.

Race Relations Project : Native Americans: Question Two

I agree with this individuals response to why should we take the blame for taking everything from the Native Americans. I feel as he his perfectly right, his family moved here about eighteen years ago and should not be part of the blame that something when his family wasn't even in this territory. Maybe they have blame because they are contributing to the issue now a days?! As Sam stated in class that Native Americans have the highest rates of drug users, alcohol abuse, and along the lines of physical abuse. In a way I kind of feel they are not helping the problem at all. If someone was trying to take something from you, wouldn't you stand up for yourself and try to be on your own two feet and keep what was first yours. I don't know I feel that this individual shouldn't be taking the blame but i'm sure some of their actions that have happened in the past eighteen years or so has helped the Indians from keeping their original belongings.

Race Relations Project : When Do We Do or Say Something?

I agree with the two individuals who left this comment, that issues like this should be our place. I mean if something along the lines of this situation happened to myself, I'm not sure exactly how I would respond. I would like to hope that I would have the courage and heart to stand up to the ignorant person making these rude comments. But when it came down to that exact time who knows how I would act?! I think that if we all thought it wasn't our place nothing would ever get accomplished. I feel that the second book that we had to read for the first exam dealt with this issue. That if we all just sat back and let people have the common stereotypes what would the world come too? If we want to see any of kind of change we ourselves have to make a step to succeed to a change. That might be a clique quote but it is a good quote to live our lives by.

Race Relations Project : What's With the Theme Parties?

I too disagree with this video post. I can't think of any theme parties that would be discriminate against black individuals. I feel that a theme party is met to 'spice' up the average party. We've all been to the same old party, the beer is in the fridge or the keg is in the corner. We're all dressed the same and listen to the same music, play beer pong and talk along each other. But theme parties add excitement to the party atmosphere. The only theme party I can think of that had anything to do with a cultural, is a 'Jersey Shore' theme party. But even that I do not feel as though our society is 'making fun' or 'discriminating' against Italians in any way what so ever. I feel that a 'Jersey Shore' party is just an excuse to fist pump and wear Ed Hardy and be cool. And I'm pretty sure the majority of the United States loved the show Jersey Shore because they're coming back soon for their second season.. When I think about theme parties i think of, nothing but clothes, holiday themed parties, CEO and corporate whores, masquerades, Golf Pros and tennis hoes, Edward 40Hands, and the list goes on. In any way I feel that those are not attacking black people. The above comment says the only 'black' themed party that individual has been to is CMT vs BET, which I still feel isn't discriminating against black people because it was targeting country music and rap music. When thinking about theme parties earlier in the year I attended a 'white trash party'. If anything I feel that is the only theme party that had any kind of discrimination involved, and everyone there loved the theme of that certain party. And I’m sure if anyone felt attacked for that theme they definitely wouldn't go. I wish the student that left this comment would have given us an example to go off. Maybe if I had heard of a party that was discriminatory, my opinion for the post would be completely different. Nor would I attend a party that is attacking a single group of people. I feel that being part of a University such as Penn State, we are all above discriminating against a racial or social group in such a large way. We're not dumb and we know discrimination happens in our society, but I feel like or would like to hope that the majority of us that attend PSU wouldn't hold a theme party that is making fun of a certain culture or a certain skin color. All this being said theme parties are just to bring a little extra excitement to a party. For everyone to put some thought into finding and exciting outfit. Plus, everyone always has a great time looking at each other’s creative ideas.

Race Relations Project : LGBT Class: Question Six

I agree with this post to the max. I've wondered for years why it is that lesbains are more accepting than gay men? Or even if you have two not attractive lesbains everyones turned off, but if its two hott girls with nice bodies, our society loves it. The thought of two men having sexual relations with each other makes it uncomfortable and awkward, but two girls our soceitys jumping on that real quick. Is this because for many girl on girl is a turn on? Or is it because our society is more accepted to two girls rather than two boys. Reading above some people have stated its because the woman body is a work of art, which is understable, but does that make it acceptable. I feel that if people are fascinated by two women than they should be fascinated with two men. The thought of two woman involved in sexual acts is just disgusting to me, I do agree the woman body is naturally beautiful but two women involved in sexual acts together is the same as two men involved in sexual actions. I don't know but for some reason this topic really bothers me.

Race Relations Project : Another Reason Why Gay Marriage Matters

After watching this video, it makes me truely feel bad for this family. And that is exactly what they are, a family. Even though it is two women raising these young boys its the same as my mother and father raising me. And the though of the goverment trying to deport one of my parents would destroy me. Who cares if it is two people of the same race raising children. As long as they are offering food, shelter, a home, and love to these young boys there is nothing wrong going on here. I honestly feel bad for the people who can't think outside of the box and realize that nothing wrong is going on here. I am really learning how the United States and people view same sex relationships as, and it's disgusting. They are being treated like their some kind of animal or some harmful person. When in fact all it is, is two people who are in love. And as long as they are providing the best atmosphere for their kids, and not doing anything physical harm to anyone, it shouldn't matter. I wish other people could see that this isn't a big deal and they're just two people in love.
