I got called on them when I expressed them out loud. Which I did often (still do). That's how I learned and grew up. I was impressed with his stance on abortion, but a little peeved at his opinion that we are "evil" because of our health care system. I tend to have less sympathy for a millionaire 16 year old than I would for someone younger. It is brutal that he's getting beat up by a bunch of grown ups but that's the playground he chose to play in. Was reading Mack Bolan and Nick Carter back then too. Remo became my favorite. I havent read them all, just 50 or 60 of them. Periodically I still pick one up to read. I was ecstatic when the first movie came out and disappointed with the result. Not the entire result, but the "bad guys" in the movie. Not to mention that Fred Ward was all wrong for the part. Joel Grey was surprisingly good as Chiun. Even as disappointed as I was I was hoping for more in the series. Hopefully, the new ones will be better. Kids are rewarded for showing up and performing. Life is about showing up. They have already beaten the kid that did not show up and this should of itself be rewarded. That's not to say that 1st, 2nd and 3rd places should not be rewarded as well. Adults have the same kinds of "consolation prizes" or rewards for simply being there as well, and yet winners are rewarded for winning. Their rewards being larger obviously. As far as bullies are concerned Mr Liebman, I respectfully disagree although I do understand that you clearly stated you were using anecdotal data and not any empirical data. You should look up the research conducted by Dr. Olweus who shatters some of those myths and generalizations about bullies. Even John Stossel did some groundbreaking investigative research into bullies. For example, the "bullies are simply kids with low self esteem" and can be beaten by "standing up to them" has been shown time and again to not be entirely true. Although there may some that fit that description, many have quite a healthy dose of self-esteem and are quite confident. They are also usually physically superior to the kid they are bullying. That is precisely why they bully them. Not to mention they also have "backup". Going to an authority figure is often the only recourse of those being bullied. Either that or continue to tolerate the bullying. However, if you change the group dynamic, as in all things, peer pressure can reduce the incidence of bullying behavior. You'll never eliminate it, but you can reduce it significantly.
