/Film : New Character Art From Disney's The Princess and the Frog

Word on Pixar. Jessie's kind of my favorite ever. And I love that they can do stories that have actual stories. Still haven't had a female lead from them, though. (Which is not meant as a criticism, given that they've done great work.) Can't wait until we do!

/Film : David Chase Returns with a Miniseries About The Birth of Cinema

I am very excited about this. Wondering what the tone of the miniseries will be. There is a lot of early glamour, and a lot of early duplicity and violence in HW history. Hope we get to see some "baddie" studio heads! (how I love/hate them!)

I'm hopeful that the film is good; I know there has been a lot of criticism over early cuts because they were judged to be racist. I don't know; haven't seen anything yet. I agree with all of this princess talk; there obviously is a time and a place, but I'm waiting for a Disney movie that features a strong woman protagonist who does not ultimately work towards the affection of a man.

/Film : Koumpounophobes Beware: New Coraline Trailer is Simply Brilliant

Wow, I think I'm officially in a fight with you. Gaiman is a unique, fresh voice, and I'm incredibly excited by this film. I actually bought the book Coraline, despite its young demographic, because of my massive admiration for his work. Neverwhere is one of my favorite books, and his short stories are really phenomenal as well. I strongly recommend Smoke and Mirrors, a collection of shorts that really display his range within his genre.

I have absolutely no interest in this film, but it would be nice to see her in a role that's so different. In the hypothetical world, of course, where I would see the film despite my deep objections to the material.

I'm not sure if this qualifies as "Cool" as much as it might fit the bill for "Disgusting". I'm a firm believer that there is generally a reason why certain things are flavored the way they are. Popcorn continuing to taste like popcorn is fine by me. Wouldn't like alcohol that tastes like it, though, either.

As some have already pointed out, there is some good sci fi going on in film, but a decent amount of it is on TV. And I'm quite happy about that. Well, not the lack in the former, but the happenin' in the latter. (Did I get those terms right? They always confuse me)

So many projects are going this unhappy route to non-existence. It's interesting that Forbes picked this one to follow; shall have to pick up the issue! To be honest, it's probably best they didn't tell the workers; I'd certainly get pretty peeved if I thought I might be working for nil.

/Film : OMG! Britney Spears (or someone like her) May Appear in Sex and the City 2!

-Biggest movie EVER in theatres in the UK -Record for DVD sales, there too -Biggest opening for a musical (granted, a category for which TDK was not eligible, but important given the diminished "natural" audience size for a musical film) TDK still has a bigger worldwide gross, but when you compare the percentage of that gross that came from the opening weekend, to the opening weekend for MM, the results are astounding. Obviously, this does not make one or the other a better film. But in terms of the significance of this for MM, it means that the movie was able to track consistent numbers, and make a helluva lot of money over a long period of time. Relatively quietly. That's all. Again, not comparing the style, content, or even commenting on the quality of either film.

Thanks for your thoughtful reply, David. It was not my intention to criticize you personally (sincerity is sometimes hard to get across thru the sarcasm-rich "inter-tubes"); I commented on your post only because it's an issue that didn't really seem relevant to any of the other posts, and your thoughts about SATC got me thinking. Which is actually a testament to you, sir. I'm actually not a big fan of the film itself, but I find it absolutely fascinating. You're absolutely right about the analysis of the NYT and Gillette's reply. But to think that a film designed to be a commercial success, with no chance or illusion of Oscar potential (and no abstinence promotion, thank god) created this kind of discussion - therein lies the fun! I mean, I could talk my personal faves, (Lynch and Hawks) all day long, but I'd probably be chatting them up with other film geeks with similar opinions to my own. Sigh.

You obviously know that I was not referring to the respective plots or styles of the two films. I'm talking impact alone. I mean, in Britain, MM is now the highest grossing film of ALL time. In the US, studios (in addition to slots such as "superhero blockbuster" and "stoner comedy") now carve out a "Meryl Streep" spot in their yearly releases. For a female actor, this is HUGE. While several male actors can command this, Streep is literally the only female with this kind of influence. Talk about gender disparity. (and let's be honest, didn't you think all through TDK, "if only Christian Bale was dancing?...: ;) )

No disrespect to to you, David, but it is articles like this that always make me wish that /Film had its own dose of estrogen. To be fair, the site is called "/Film", not "/BoyFilm". I value this site for the discussion it creates and provokes. I would love to see a valid discussion about why "SATC" did so well in theaters, rather than an "its not so bad" admission. Because that discussion is very interesting, and says a LOT about our society. Personally, I like the series, but was not crazy about the film. The marketing and publicity for this movie, however, was incredible. While /Film heavily covered Dark Knight promos and Cloverfield virals, I don't recall a single mention of NewLine's efforts for SATC. (They were considerable) I'm a little upset that now that a mention has been posted, all commentary is VERY gendered. For that matter, speaking of The Dark Knight (which I love), in comparison, you've posted next to nothing about Mamma Mia!(which I love), a film which has bypassed TDK on several fronts numbers-wise. Wake up, boys. You are the "male dominated entertainment press" to which David refers.

Hmm... I'm really not sure about this. Seems kind of weird for the writer of an original film that became a Bway musical that became a musical movie to write a sequel to the... musical movie. If it's going to happen, however, I'm glad that Waters is involved. I'm a little curious about him taking out all of the wonderful Waters content to make it acceptable for wider audiences, but then again, the original Hairspray was comparatively tame.

Huh? Wha? There would have to be some sort of... something. Loved the way they did the Brady Bunch movies, but they couldn't get away with the same thing for Gilligan, could they? Amy Adams would make a perfect Mary Ann, though, not that I would want her to take a role in what would likely be an unfortunate film.

/Film : 9 Movie Trailer

Huzzah! I'm glad that Burton got attached to be able to make this happen, but I also hope that it doesn't get labeled as merely a "Burton" film. Because dark does not necessarily mean T. Burton, contrary to what I fear is often public conception. (Burton's not even all that dark all the time, geesh) Can we talk about the voice talent? Martin Landau? Crispin Glover? John C. Reilly? CHRISTOPHER PLUMMER?!?!?! I'm lukewarm-okay on Connelly and Wood, but the others are like a personal dream come true. (especially Christopher Plummer. His voice is like molasses to my sour soul) This film needs to be what the short was, EPIC. I remember thinking that it was pretty intense, especially for short form. Hopefully will not be watered down.

I agree with Alex, this is creepy. I think the project looks really interesting, and am sure the film is excellent (or at least worth my theatre money) but I already have a freakish aversion to content that portrays unnatural aging or in which someone can't control time. Jack was awful to me. Someone recommended I read the Time Traveler's Wife. Don't even get me started on What Dreams May Come - who chooses to be a stewardess?! While I agree that the actual posters are not works of art, showing Pitt and Blanchett does open up the audience that will come to this movie (not me) and removes a very HIGH level of creepy.
