The Toast : An Open Thread, and Sea Room

Also, thanks to the Toasties who gave me many wonderful recommendations for my trip to London; I wasn't able to hit them all, but I waited for an hour for a table at Dishoom and it was 1000% worth it.

The Toast : The Final Link Roundup!

As sad as I am, and as sad as this is - I'm glad the ending of the Toast is with a final, decisive period. So many sites and communities I've loved have had the slow drawn-out death of a bad opera, or been swallowed up by their hosting services crashing, or we've all drifted away. At least this is ending on a very high note and we had fair warning. J/K I'M STILL SUPER SAD. At least I have all the snack food I bought on vacation to console me. Anybody want a Jaffa cake?

I dropped out of my program after my MA for various reasons and I have survived! I have a career on the admin side of higher ed that I quite enjoy (even though right now in the thick of orientation I am ready to throw things). A lot more people do this than you might realize.

My three times were as follows: 1) Philip's death 2) Burn (trying not to GASP FOR AIR as tears stream down my face) 3) Hamilton's final soliloquy to the end Oh, wait, 4) Meeting Lin-Manuel Miranda in the lobby and trying to explain how much In the Heights and this piece and his entire career mean to me (did NOT sob uncontrollably, got some amazing selfies with him, highlight of my life)

Nicole, I had the same worry when I went to see Hamilton at the Public back in April - what if I'm the one person who doesn't like it? What if the hype is too big? What if it's ALL hype? It is not hype. It is not too big. This show is a magnificent achievement and everyone on stage is working to the fullest capacity of their talents. (I saw Javier Munoz as Hamilton rather than Lin-Manuel but he was spectacular and also a total sweetheart when I spoke to him in the lobby afterwards.) Soundtrack's out in 26 days and I cannot wait. How many times did you cry? I cried three times, although the third time was "the entire finale".

My dad always calls it "whats-this-here sauce," because #dadjokes. (Meanwhile I remember the day my non-Masshole friends were complaining about how Worcester doesn't sound at all like it's spelled and I was sitting there going "Well, DUH." Good times!) (It's "WOOster." Or "Wuzteh" if you're from the city.)

KENDRA! Your cosplayingchildren tumblr is one of my favorites and this piece was great, even if some of the experiences were AWFUL, but you wrote about them with such clarity and the highlights seemed SO HIGH, and YOU WERE IN AN ELEVATOR WITH MATT BOMER AND SURVIVED? What a wild ride of an article. (Seriously. Go to http://cosplayingchildren.tumblr.com/ and have your day made 100% better. Or cuter. Or both.)

Book rec: The Unapologetic Fat Girl's Guide to Exercise and Other Incendiary Acts, by Hanne Blank. I was dealing with the same thing - how do I do stuff to make my body feel better WITHOUT falling into the disordered eating + exercise spiral I've worked so hard to overcome? And this book made me feel like my skull had been cracked open and the light poured in. It's definitely coming from a firm fat acceptance and Health At Every Size perspective, and I just found it so great. Heartily recommended.
