I think that this challenge isn't about being better than anyone--like Jes said, there is no better than, only I am awesome because. The point of this challenge is to encourage women to think positively about themselves and declare their independence from self-hate. We're barraged with messages from the media to hate the way we look, to change the way we look, to change how we act to fit into society's mold of what it means to be a woman. So all this is trying to do is say--hey--this is me. Take it or leave it. I'm proud of it. And like Jes said--if a man wants to do it, he should! But the fact is that women are still fighting the patriarchal society that dominates America. We're paid less, and we're told we have to be everything--sexy, sweet, feminine, caring, loving, and smart. But we're all just human beings, and it's time for women to stand up for themselves because, unfortunately, not everyone is as awesome and open minded as you are! There are still FAR too many people out there oppressing women.
Andrea, thank you so much for this comment. What you said completely hit home--it's not about "wow, look how cool I am" but look--this is me. YES!!! That is exactly it, and you have just helped me nail down my feelings on the whole issue. THANK YOU.
LAURA!!! Best best advice. You're right--it's not all black and white. I think right now outfit posting and anything like it is just not where I'm at, and that's ok.
