Stuff Christians Like - Jon Acuff : Distancing ourselves from the word “religion.”

I completely agree with #4. I know people who are outspoken Christians who I cannot have a conversation about religion with because their approach is so hateful (dude, I guarantee "you're going to hell" is never going to convince me - this is approximately as effective as telling me I am banished to Candyland) and I know people who are outspoken Christians who are some of the most loving, kind and intellectually curious people I've ever met. It's not about how they identify (across the board as Christians), it's about how they act toward others. And I'm an atheist, so I get my fair share of the Mikey effect, albeit in a different way :)

Stuff Christians Like - Jon Acuff : Quietly distancing ourselves from Mel Gibson.

Braveheart felt like complete self-indulgence, and have no interest in the Passion because I assume it's got to be twice as bad on that front. Lethal Weapon is kind of fun(ish). He's sort of a scenary chewer. But, yeah, hopefully he gets his stuff together.

Amen, Aydan. This is why a group of Catholic priests and nuns supported the healthcare bill - they'd seen women say, time and again, "I'm having an abortion because I can't afford to take myself to the doctor, or to take the baby to the doctor once its born, even if you will give me free pre-natal care. And I certainly can't afford a hospital birth."

What about instances where there are severe birth defects, like anencephaly? The pregnancy doesn't threaten the mother's life, but the fetus will not survive. She should be forced to carry a dying baby for months on end? Is that compassion or love?

The 9th amendment comes into play here. I would also say that the Judeo-Christian basis for the nation is false - if anything, it relies heavily on Roman government structure. Decidedly un-Christian, that.

I am interested in this oft-quoted "conservatives give more" number. Is it true if you take out tithing/general donations to religious institutions that are not otherwise charitable (e.g., paying a minister's salary, not funding a well in sub-Saharan Africa)?

Ha, this is funny because I didn't know it was weird to sit up front (I don't go to church) so when I went to my husband's aunt's church for something, I just figured I should sit where the empty seats were...and that was, you guessed it, the front row.

Oh, no. That would be the kind of thing your coworker would ask, like, six months later after you had already mentioned attending A church, but not which one. We don't like to assume that people go, or that they're Christian if they are religious - it's considered rude, probably a demographic thing since, for example, NYC is about 15% Jewish and about 3% Indian American (mostl Hindu and Muslim) so you're really making a big assumption if you just figure EVERYONE is Christian and church going. My coworkers talk a bunch about their church activities, but it's always "so I was at this church event on Thursday" to lead into a story that could have easily taken place at any normal party of a suburban adult parents. It's never "I feel called to tell you about the sermon I heard on Sunday in great detail."

It's normal in the North, too! My family lives in a rural area, and that's the normal "hello!" when one person is in the car and another is walking.

Ha, this is funny! I find that the more conservative the church, the less likely they are to hug - too much body touching for people you don't know. Then there's the church I went to in SF - they hug everyone.
