The Toast : On Money, Anxiety, and Marriage

Wow, I know I'm echoing a lot of people here, but this really resonated with me and with some of the problems with money in my marriage. Except--TWIST--I'm the tight-fisted one but also the one who grew up in an upper-middle class financially stable family, where my husband has the "it's gonna be OK, don't worry about it" attitude and he grew up in a financially insecure family. And it's hitting especially hard now because I just got laid off from my first really well-paying job that finally gave us a feeling of financial freedom. Now all the old anxieties from the lean times in the past are creeping back in.

The Toast : Ten Knitting Patterns for Crafty Feminists

Oh man, this is timely. I just unearthed from my closet an "inspired by Le Tigre" sweater I knit about 10 years ago that says "feminist" on it. Back when I had time to make up my own patterns and knit them. This is great!

I am HERE for this conversation. Every year I choose a different color scheme for my gifts. I usually do ones that are kind of off-brand for Christmas, but this year I went traditional and did glossy emerald paper with red and white striped twill tape.

I once mailed a Christmas gift to my parents, and accidentally put my own zip code on it instead of theirs (we live in the same state, but about 200 miles apart), and it made it there fine, I think there might have been a 1 or 2 day delay.

I am also starting a new job that pays me twice as much a week from Monday! High five! Also, I have been unhappy with the way my body looks for a while now, post childbirth and periods of depression, etc, and I started eating better and have been getting on the treadmill a few times a week for the past couple months and have lost an amount of weight that I am really happy about! I just feel like my life as a whole is moving in a really positive direction, and that feels great.

Wait, was SonFest at the Mt Vernon Naz? Because I totally went to that! Probably late 90s early 2000s, but not sure exactly which year. I know John Reuben was there the year I went because I immediately developed a massive crush on him.

Hello friends! I don't post here often, but do read often and I know how many of you have shared the joys of quitting your job. This afternoon, I will know that joy as well. Even better, I am quitting my job to take a new, better job that is not going to bore me to tears and that will pay me double the money I am now making at my sad, boring job. I've been at this sad, boring job for 8 years, so this is a huge change, but I am so happy to be making it.

I'm doing a Whole30 right now with my husband and best friend. I made some kale chips last night that were delicious--I put garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, cayenne and salt on them and they were great. My husband and I ate two sheet pans of them. We had lettuce wraps last weekend that were good--ground beef with coconut aminos, rice vinegar, and sambal olek topped with shredded carrots, green onions and cashews in iceberg lettuce cups. Making a giant batch of steak, chicken and vegetable kabobs made for a lot of leftovers for the week and that was pretty handy (marinated in red vinegar and olive oil). I have pretty much all our dinners planned out for the 30 days, but I'd love to hear other people's recipes in case we decide to continue eating paleo after it's over.

The Toast : Every Track From WOW 1999, In Order

I still have so many Christian music compilation CDs hidden away in my house. I sneak them out and listen to them when my husband isn't around to mock me. The first, and best, one I have is Tooth and Nail Volume 1--it introduced me to Pedro the Lion and Damien Jurado in high school and for that I will be forever grateful.

The Toast : Ginger Snaps: The Menstrual Horror Movie Of Your Dreams

First of all, I love this movie, so thank you for this piece! Secondly, this line: "not even Bridget, whose outsider perspective on the traps of womanhood cannot yet conceive of actual female sexual desire, only female objectification or sexual passivity" brought me a crystal clear realization about my weirdness about sex as a teen.

The Toast : The Ur-Dad Story

Within probably ten minutes of coming to visit me at my newly purchased first house, my dad was on the roof cleaning out the gutters. Also, my sister and I still roll on the floor with laughter when we remember the goofy grin on his face we caught one day while he was watching a "Bonanza" retrospective (my dad, in general, is not the "grinning" type).

The Toast : Raising the Tone: Etiquette for Gift Disasters and "I Already Ate"

Just a thought that isn't addressed in L2, but maybe one or both of the friends had suggested going to a restaurant, but on the day of the get-together, found themselves short money, and weren't able to order food or were only able to order a small amount and thought that brushing it off with "I already ate" was less embarrasing than "I can't afford to eat here". Not that something similar has ever happened to me...

The Toast : Link Roundup!

I told someone else upthread, but it might get buried--it's not really a sex thing (although there is plenty of sex in the books, and the show if the first episode is any indicator), the scene I'm guessing that's being referred to here is where Jaime (the male lead), beats Claire (the female lead) with a belt for disobeying him.
