alexpriest.com : How NOT To Do Customer Service

Exactly! I couldn't agree more. I was telling my roomie earlier, when I received the two packages and saw the extra charge, I really wasn't angry at all. Mistakes happen, it's not a big deal. And yea, it was a little pricey, but I'm not *that* broke, so I wasn't that upset about it. I gave them a quick call yesterday, left a nice, calm message, and figured maybe they'd give me a quick apology and a little discount. Had the first they done been *apologize*, I probably wouldn't have been angry at all. I would've just sucked it up and said ok, thanks for your time, happy holidays (sincerely). But instead they went IMMEDIATELY to defensive mode, blaming me for the mistake and insisting there was nothing they could do about the problem. So many mistakes made our their part, it's such a shame. Not to mention how many people have heard me complain about it tonight. If they'd played their cards right, this might have been a blog post singing their praises--I've done it before.

alexpriest.com : I Don't Care, Either

Not disagreeing with that at all! Although I'll be honest--the professors I take the most issue with here at AU are *not* the ones in that situation. The professors in that situation--shitty though it may be--are actually the ones who generally do the best, because they know to make the most of the situation and, more often than not, they're young enough to still relate to the generation that they're educating. The professors I take issue with are--as much as I hate to say it--generally just old. They're all wealthy (especially around here, trust me), they've worked in business or whatever field for a few years and come back to teach, and they're just stagnant. They don't try to do anything different or make anything better. They just teach the textbook and move along. Finalllly, I'm not saying my professors don't *want* to inspire and keep students learning. I'm sure the vast majority of them do. It's just that, to a large extent, they don't know how. So that's why I'm doing all of this :)

alexpriest.com : Pre-Resolutions

Definitely! Excellent, excellent point, and one I've heard before, I think. I always do my best to make my resolutions long-term focused, and more positively oriented, like you suggest. It's all about having that ACTION to fulfill--it's not eating less, it's eating more healthy things. It's not watching less TV, it's finding ways of exercising between commercials. Or whatever.

alexpriest.com : A Long Bet

Thanks for the comment! Yea, I mean I'm definitely not saying Google is going anywhere--they're not--but I think Facebook may very well be worth more than they are down the road. Regardless, I think they're both going to be incredible successful, and will no doubt remain two of the most valuable companies in the world, in 2013 and beyond!

alexpriest.com : It's Not Privacy That Matters, It's the Illusion

Aha, thanks for the comment, Dan! And I hope there's no hard feelings about the whole acronym thing--all in the spirit of playful debate! ;-) Perhaps a rebuttal to your rebuttal? I never argued that there aren't SOME things people like to keep secret. There certainly are--I probably should've been more clear that I'm referring specifically to privacy on the Web and social media. But those things--eg. social security number, credit cards, etc.--are not things that they're posting publicly on Facebook, nor should they. Keeping those things secure ("private" if you prefer) is the individual's responsibility (as it should be). Facebook makes no secret at all that they want to make you a public person. Hell, Zuckerberg himself uses the line, "I'm trying to make the world a more open place," in his bio. Individuals giving their information to Facebook should either a) accept that, or b) take the time and the initiative to explore the privacy options fully to take control of their own information. As for not enough people who care enough about what could happen to their data to stop using Facebook... well, yes. Exactly. That's my point--people don't care. The "privacy threat of Facebook" is--no offense--kind of a ridiculous statement to make. The only threat to privacy is the individual themselves, posting stupid shit on Facebook that they should no better not to post. My analogy was just fine--this isn't an "early warning" because there won't be anything to be warning people about. The cultural shift towards openness isn't a crisis or some sort of natural disaster. It's not a bad thing, and it's not something that will happen on one random day. It's a long, slow, steady process, and--in my humble opinion--an inevitable one. That won't include "social security number, visa and other cc numbers, paypal account information, a history of your sexual partners, and several nude self portraits," because, well, that would involve a number of legal and other cultural norms to overcome before we got to privacy. ;-) Anyway, this is a great debate. Who knows, I could be way off base and you might've nailed the issue. I just don't think so--not now, anyway. But this is a fast-changing world, as we both know! Keep up the great work.
