That's the only reason they don't work most of the time. The MAX train has been set to proceed to the next station, it's a safety issue. I understand your frustration with the MAX buttons, but it is a multi-ton train that the little boy was walking next to and it's a machine, much larger than him. Hold on to the hand rail of the train so he wouldn't lose his balance? Why would he have lost his balance on a completely flat sidewalk when walking? The driver probably also didn't know that a child had gotten stuck in there, he or she probably just figured that it was someone wanting to get on the train but they were already ready to go. People inside could have also pushed the emergency button and most drivers would have came over the loud speaker. Please don't take this the wrong way, because I would hate to get separated from a child like that, but we need to all be more aware of our surroundings and stop hating on others... we all make mistakes. But everytime i've noticed someone push the buttons to try to get on, it's too late because all the signals are ready for the train to come. It's as if once they get those signals, there is no turning back. MAX trains can't just stop in the middle of an intersection or anywhere like buses to let people on. They are very "fixed" in their nature. Not too sure if this is the case, but everytime i've ridden the MAX, this is what i've noticed.
