It's also an unfair fight as he is blaming the failings of myriad ideologies which come under the umbrella of 'secularism' while contrasting it to his narrow definition of what constitutes Islam. The two don't bare comparison. It's like saying everything bad that happens outside my fishpond is the fault of the entire universe (outside the fishpond naturally).

Actually it's pointless arguing with an islamist because they always shift the boundaries. They use the amorphous nature of what constitutes Islam to their advantage. He'll refute every example you posit as "that's Muslims not Islam" as he believes that a true Islamic state has not been instituted since the early calpihs. However this true Islamic state would bring disastrous consequences for women and non-Muslims and also any Muslim who has an opinion that is divergent from the self-proclaimed guardians of his new Islamic republic. But religion is a lived experience. Islam is what Muslims make of it. Other than that it's just words on paper. At times they've made good of it. At other times it's been a balls-up. Some believers write the most sublime treatises while others spout the most disgusting bile. Islamists are as much political as they are religious.
