excellent idea. why don't they remake blade runner next? i mean, the VFX could be SO MUCH better now, right? right. me, i'm going to get started on my harry potter remake. i feel this franchise could use a little updating.

/Film : Question: Is The Man vs. Terrifying Machines Movie Concept No Longer Scary?

the terminator movies aren't technophobic. in the first film, sarah destroys the terminator in a hydraulic press, which is a machine itself. in the second film, the resistance reprograms a terminator to become the ultimate protector as opposed to ultimate killer. the terminator going from ultimate bad guy in the first film to ultimate good guy in the second, i think, is the real point to the terminator story: that technology can be used for either good or bad. also, cameron is too clever of a guy to make a movie that says "technology is bad" and then make one of the most technologically-advanced films of its era (T2). people also forget that the whole idea of the terminator came to him in a dream he had about a robotic skeleton that was relentlessly trying to kill him and he just thought it'd make a fucking cool movie--and he was completely right.

seriously, why isn't pinochet on this list or on the plundering politicians list? he killed/"disappeared" thousands of chileans, overthrew allende in a military coup, and this all happened in the '70s and '80s. oh, and he also had the help of the CIA and did all of his slaying in the name of the free market. and like all proper dictators, he suffered no consequences for what he did.

/Film : Box Office: Watchmen Down 24% Saturday; Is Word-Of-Mouth "Killing the Masks?”

well, that's what God Himself, Joss Whedon (all praise be upon Him) said two weeks ago: that marvel movies are better because their characters are more relatable. which may or may not be true, but marvel characters, IMO, are nowhere near as interesting as some of the ones from the DC universe (e.g., the joker, two-face, rorschach, the comedian, etc). i agree w/ you and disagree w/ whedon. i think good movies feature *interesting* characters; whether or not they're likable or relatable is beside the point.

/Film : Joss Whedon's Theory On Why DC Comic Book Movies Usually Suck

i definitely prefer DC. when i think about the comics i love, the majority of them are DC titles: batman #1, the killing joke, batman: year one, arkham asylum, the dark knight returns, joker, the watchmen, (gaiman's) sandman, the invisibles, etc. marvel titles and characters, are, imo, a bit corny. there's a real boy scout vibe to marvel, whereas DC (despite having the ultimate boy scout in superman) is a bit more subversive, creative, imaginative, complex, and (for lack of a better word), dark. yeah, marvel titles definitely lend themselves to be adapted into great popcorn movies (and i love iron man so i'm not damning w/ faint praise here), but i doubt there will ever be a marvel adaptation like the dark knight (or possibly watchmen). i think DC characters (w/ the exception of superman) are much more fascinating than marvel ones. let's face it, there isn't a marvel villain anywhere near as compelling or charismatic as the joker. the joker touches on real primal, jungian archetypes. he's a pop culture icon. the green goblin? magneto? mandarin? yawn. (settle down, i'm just kidding.) what comic books are considered legitimate works of art and literature? the watchmen and sandman. marvel has never done anything like either of those titles and it's never done anything remotely close to something like the invisibles. i don't know where whedon gets off saying that marvel is more "relatable"; the watchmen and the invisibles are set in the real world and deconstruct society and pop culture and the very concept of the superhero itself. and anyway, what's so "relatable" about a vampire slayer? methinks someone has bought into his own hype. anyway, it's also funny that whedon says this, since ghost rider, the fantstic four, x-men 3, hulk, etc. were total bombs. the dark knight is the most successful comic book film to date and it looks like watchmen will be in the top tier.

slumdog is officially overrated. i like the movie, but seriously, it should not have won some of the awards that it did. cinematography? editing? no. in purely technical terms, there were better films than slumdog in both categories.

i know it isn't right. that's why i said bale was in the wrong to do it. my point is that no one cares if your boss at your job yells at you for screwing up. no one thinks he's an asshole or a diva or whatever (except you), but since christian bale is yelling at this guy, it's because he's an actor and actors are prima donnas, hollywod is "weird," acting "shouldn't be taken seriously," etc., etc.

yeah we can point our fingers and bitch and moan about bale being a diva, but you know what? bet you anything shane hurlbut will *never* make that mistake again. ever. also, bale says he did it twice and from the sound of it, this is the sort of thing that a DP never does. as a musician, i couldn't imagine an engineer or studio hand distracting me while recording a take. yeah, you can record again, but that's not the point. the point is: what professional doesn't know not to do that? part of your job is knowing when to do a task. checking the light while the camera is rolling is just ridiculous. and to do it more than once? anyway, when i worked at UPS, this kinda crap was always going down. one of us bottom-feeders would screw up and one of the higher-ups would go ape-shit. and we were union! and all we did was deliver people's dumb crap from amazon. hardly anything to take seriously, but you know what? people get pissed the fuck off if their little packages don't get delivered on time. just like people get grumpy if a movie is poorly made. then that movie underperforms at the box office and then the studio loses money on its investment. you screw up, you get chewed out. yes, bale was totally in the wrong to do it in public like that and to do it that severely, but a DP should know better.

movies, especially a movie as big as the terminator, are multi-million dollar investments. how on earth are they *not* supposed to take it seriously? the entertainment industry employs scores of people; think about that before you parrot the "it's only a movie" bit. as for doctors, many of them get into medicine because of the status it awards them and because they have a god complex. anyway, don't most people take their jobs seriously? actors aren't supposed to as well? no, bale didn't *need* to take the terimantor gig, but again, it's a movie that employed hundreds of people. screwing up a shot delays things and costs money.
