"From where Winston stood it was just possible to read, picked out on its white face in elegant lettering, the three slogans of the Party:

WAR IS PEACE
FREEDOM IS SLAVERY
IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH."

The Party seeks power entirely for its own sake. We are not interested in the good of others; we are interested solely in power. Not wealth or luxury or long life or happiness: only power, pure power. What pure power means you will understand presently. We are different from all the oligarchies of the past, in that we know what we are doing. All the others, even those who resembled ourselves, were cowards and hypocrites. The German Nazis and the Russian Communists came very close to us in their methods, but they never had the courage to recognize their own motives. They pretended, perhaps they even believed, that they had seized power unwillingly and for a limited time, and that just round the corner there lay a paradise where human beings would be free and equal. We are not like that. We know that no one ever seizes power with the intention of relinquishing it. Power is not a means; it is an end. One does not establish a dictatorship in order to safeguard a revolution; one makes the revolution in order to establish the dictatorship. The object of persecution is persecution. The object of torture is torture. The object of power is power."

The NY Times killed a story during election season because they knew it would kill Obama's chances to win the election. Could the stakes have been higher? Those who sat on the story ought to be indicted.

It's criminal, because the American people count on media to vet our candidates. More proof that the mainstream committed the greatest act of perfidy in American history and installed a criminal and an enemy in the most powerful office in the world. Wow.

The media ignored the explosive stories Atlas broke on Obama's millions in foreign money, Gaza contributions, millions paid to SEIU and ACORN. Systemic corruption and an in the tank media propaganda machine.

Dear Mr. Alfone:

Thank you for contacting me regarding the Serve America Act (S. 277), which was introduced by Senator Edward Kennedy (D-MA).

As you may already know, S. 277 seeks to expand the opportunities available to Americans of all ages to engage in national and community service. In addition, this measure would create new programs and initiatives dedicated toward meeting specific challenges, such as natural disaster preparedness and response, high school dropout prevention, energy conservation and environmental stewardship, and health care.

S. 277 would more than triple the amount of volunteer spots available through AmeriCorps. This legislation would also establish a reserve corps composed of alumni of AmeriCorps and other national service programs to be mobilized to assist with disaster recovery. In addition, in order to tap into the strong civic spirit of America's senior citizens, this measure would allow older Americans participating in national service to receive education awards that they could transfer to their grandchildren. Currently, AmeriCorps members must use their education benefits solely for their own expenses. A Commission on Cross-Sector Solutions to America's Problems would also be established to study ways in which the federal government and businesses can more effectively collaborate with nonprofit and philanthropic organizations to address pressing national and local challenges. In an effort to better educate Americans about the volunteer service opportunities available to them, this legislation calls on the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) to conduct a nationwide "Call to Service" campaign 180 days after the bill is passed.

I have long supported efforts to promote public service, and I also have a special page on my Senate website for those interested in public service at http://lieberman.senate.gov/issues/serve.cfm. In 1993, I was an original cosponsor of the National Service Trust Act (P.L. 103-82), which passed Congress and was signed into law by President Bill Clinton that year. This law spawned the creation of the very successful AmeriCorps program, which provides participants with a small stipend or an education award that they can use to pay for college expenses or pay back student loans in exchange for two years of national service work that addresses educational, environmental, human, or public safety needs.

Since it began in 1994, over 500,000 AmeriCorps volunteers have worked in communities throughout the United States, providing critical services such as teaching in overcrowded schools or helping communities clean up after a natural disaster. Studies have indicated that AmeriCorps members, after their terms of service are completed, are much more likely to remain engaged in their communities as volunteers, teachers, and nonprofit professionals. While the majority of program participants are recent college graduates, Americans of all ages are eligible to participate. I have remained a steadfast supporter of this program and have fought against repeated attempts by President Bush to cut its funding.

On March 18, 2009, the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions unanimously voted to pass S. 277 and send it to the full Senate for approval. On that same day, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Generations Invigorating Volunteerism and Education Act (GIVE Act; H.R. 1388), which was introduced by Senator Carolyn McCarthy (D-NY) by a vote of 321-105. This contains many of the same provisions found in S. 277. On March 23, 2009, the Senate, with my support, approved a procedural motion that will allow the Senate to begin considering H.R. 1388. The Senate will be debating this measure this week. I support this reauthorization proposal, and look forward to Senate approval of the bill. To keep track of further developments on this legislation, you can go to the "Bill Tracking" service at http://lieberman.senate.gov/issues/resources.

Thank you again for sharing your views and concerns with me. I hope you will continue to visit my website at http://lieberman.senate.gov for updated news about my work on behalf of Connecticut and the nation. Please contact me if you have any additional questions or comments about our work in Congress.
