Maybe the most appealing thing in MLP for me and many others is the lack of cynicism. But i think the show did it right, the dark-ish themes and fan service, imo, never hurt the essence of the show. I even think that show can be better for kids (and adults too) if its less restricted. In other words, the show is as "mature" as it always was, and im glad. As others pointed out. But first of all, i think the term "adult", as its commonly used, doesn't mean its more entertaining for mature audiences, it means its not adequate for kids. On this sense i think the show is still family friendly, imo kids can handle what is done or even more if its for the sake of improvement. Kids shows don't have to treat them as if they are stupid or overly sensitive. MLP is absolutely great when dealing with it while teaching valuable lessons. Said that, i miss some of the sillyness from earlier seasons and i think it can be conciliated with the new epicness and emotional rollercoasters from recent ones.
