This is a stellar list, SF, though I would have added Kate Winslet to the mix. Haven't cared for her since she started showing us her hoo-ha all of the time. I haaaaated that movie as well. That same year, a great little indie called Stephanie Daley came out, which also was about a teenage pregnancy and it got it just right. I spent most of that awards season saying, bitterly, "Stepanie Daley is the teen pregnancy movie that should have blown up, not motherfucking Juno."

Please, let me know if I'm contributing to the super annoying questions list, but I am wondering two things: Do many working actors have agents? Is it worth it to sign up with an agency, or do you find that you can go to many auditions as an unsolicited (for lack of a better term) candidate? How does one get into commercials, television, or Broadway? Can you explain a bit about the painful process that you mentioned above? Like I said, don't feel obligated to answer and please tell me if these questions are out of bounds. I just find this topic fascinating.

I still use the first cell phone I ever bought from 6 years ago--a silver/grey LG clamshell style cell (with built-in camera!1!) My thinking is, the best phone to have is the one that's paid for. And is not attached to a data plan whose cost makes my stomach hurt.

Lovely post, Geoffrey, and you're making me a little homesick over here! I'm from the Canadian side of the border (are we still calling it South Detroit?) but always enjoy a visit to the DIA, People's Records, and Cass Cafe. I'll definitely have to check out some of the farther out places you've suggested here (and some of the not-so-far ones--looks like I've missed out on quite a bit in the city proper). I live in Toronto now, but sometimes dream about moving back to be closer to the family, nearer to the states, and to live in an area where a decent apartment doesn't cost half your salary! And what I wouldn't give to be able to restore some of those heritage buildings in the city...sigh.
