Did Santorum attack Protestants or "mainline Protestantism"? The moral teaching of mainline Protestantism are riddled with error. For example, take the United Methodists. They lent material support to people advocating abortion in the early 1970s (See their support of the religious centers for reproductive choice). Further, they will not condemn embryonic stem cell research which is nothing short of human experimentation. Don't take my work for it -- look it up on their website. As for the various heterodoxy of this or that Catholic or group of Catholics, or clergy, how does this change the immutable teaching of the Church? There is an objective teaching, and if excesses or outright errors of individuals start, that does not change the Faith. Further, if someone in the Church is abusing a practice such as selling indulgences, does that mean that another Catholic has the authority to start their own church? If you say yes, then who confers the authority? It is Christ, working through any priest including the Pope, that forgives sins. It is a miraculous thing. Christ worked all of his miracles as a man and continues to work his miracles through humans. His authority was conferred to men (plural). Don't believe me, read Matt 9:8 -- the last word is plural.
