Race Relations Project : The tyranny of radical Muslims...

I am so, so glad that you brought this up because people need to really understand that a whole society cannot be blamed for something one person or a couple of people did wrong. We all have a mind of our own but at the end we all worship one God (Allah). I am Muslim myself, and violence is the last thing on my mind, I love all my fellow brothers and sisters wither they are Christian, Muslim, Buddhist, Irish…You name it…I don’t care!!! All that matters to me is your personality, the type of person you are. Speaking of Christianity, like I stated earlier I am Muslim, but so far in my life I have dated nothing but Christian men, and it’s not like I do it on purpose, it just happens because I love their personality, because that’s what counts more than anything else. Not every Muslim Discriminates against other religions, I said that because I know that there are some that do. But it’s the same case for Christians, Irish….This society found a way to make religion become more of a political issue than faith or anything. Religion is supposed to be a Spiritual thing, it’s supposed to help us stay on the right path and get closer to God (Allah), find a way to make our sins be forgiven, love one another, forget about the negative and only think positively… but it seems like it’s not the case in this society anymore. There has always been a separation when it comes to gender, age, political parties, cultures, race, color, ethnicity, tribes, countries… I mean you name it…But I believe that the one thing that definitely should have never been divided is “Religion” because it’s so powerful, it’s one thing that we all (Humans) have in common on this earth because we were all created by one and only God (Allah) and we are all connected through God. But it’s very Sad and unfortunate that we (Humans) always try to find a way to segregate each other no matter what. I mean don’t get me wrong, I do understand that some people don’t have the same view as me, and that’s fine by me, because we all have our own opinions, and own beliefs and again, I don’t discriminate against others beliefs or anything, as a matter of fact I am very open to any diversity, as long as it’s not forced up on me, I am fine!!! Because I don’t force anything up on people. I just really want people to understand that we can’t blame one another for someone else’s wrong doing, it’s very hurtful, to tell you when I first came to the USA I was 13 yrs old and it was right after 9/11 so at the airport when they saw in my passport that I was born and raised in an Arabic country and I was Muslim, they took my passport away from me to go check all types of things with the security for like 2 to 3 hours while I was waiting for them scared that something was going to happen to me. I was not allowed to go see my family until they came back with my passport to tell me that my record was clear and that I could now enter their country. Honestly it made me hate this place for a while because I thought that’s how people here would treat me like a (Terrorist) just because of my religion and background. It really HURT!!! But I learned to live with it I guess. I just hope that people will stop generalizing a whole group of people and just try 2 open up some more before they judge. PEACE & LOVE.

Race Relations Project : What About Multiracial People?

It is so sad that none of us Humans can live on this earth without being categorized as black, brown, white or yellow. I mean what is the big deal? What changes is it going to make if they know it or not? We are all human beings; we should all be treated equally regardless of where we come from or what our skin color is. This is so the 21st century and we should not have to worry about that, especially now that people from different backgrounds and countries get married to each other. It’s just hard to categorize people now, it shouldn’t even matter. I know exactly how you feel because I am a multiracial woman, as well as most of my friends and cousins and unfortunately we have all been going through the same thing as you for years now, and it gets very annoying and frustrating. But you know what?!?! That is when the whole thing with knowing yourself, who you are, where you come from what makes you happy comes in hand. At the end one should definitely not care about what other people are saying or thinking. Life is too short to be worrying about all that you know. If you have been raised and grew up around one side more than the other then obviously you will adapt to that environment and that is not your fault, it is just how it’s supposed to be. In my case I have been around my mother’s side of the family more than my father’s side, so I definitely got attached to my mother’s side and I learned their ways, cultures, traditions, languages I mean you name it. Don’t get me wrong, I eventually tried to learn a little about my father’s side but I was still more influenced by my mother’s side and there is nothing wrong with that because that is the side I was exposed to. Don’t ever feel the need to explain yourself man. Again if you know who you are then that is all that matters seriously. Even though the class I based on Race relations, I am so tired of always ending up talking about black/brown and white people like those are the only races in this world. But anyway, if you feel confident with your Hispanic side then so be it man. It’s just like if a black person was exposed to an Asian culture they would end up learning and having their values, it’s not like they are forced to do so, but those are your surroundings then you have no choice but to be apart of the team. Plus just a little point of thought, I believe that multiracial people are very interesting and lucky at the same time, because wherever you travel to in this world, you can kind of adapt to any environments to end up in without being afraid to do so. So take it as a privilege ;-).

Race Relations Project : Those Dolls Say Alot About Who We Are

I don’t think I have ever been so HURT or DISTURBED more than this in my life. This video literally took the life out of me. I mean I couldn’t even find the right words to describe how I felt after watching it. I didn’t know if it was anger, sadness or disappointment. But I just know that it was nothing positive. This video just made me realize how much society has an impact on people and how much it just influences people the wrong way. And we have no idea how much we are sending the wrong messages to the future generations. I mean how would you feel if your child had the same color as the doll that she or he believes is the bad one and the ugly one. Just looking through this little girl’s eyes when she selected the black doll to represent herself after she said that I was the ugly one…just took my Breath Awayyyyyy. Tears just kept on coming down my face and I was speechless and beyond hurt. I can’t imagine how her parents and the girl who interviewed these kids felt about it. Why can’t we love our skin color? Why does it have to matter? Ever since each one of us became a part of this world, we were taught that there was and still is a problem with the dark skin. I mean it even came to a point where there are even some color problem within the black community. Because light skin black people have always been told that they were better than darker black people. Even today In one of my discussion group, we did an exercise where the instructor would read some statement and we the students would have to make one step forward if the statement was true to us, and tell me why by the end of the exercise all the white students were way up at the front and all the black students were completely in the back. But we also noticed that the lighter black people were closer to the white students and the black males were closer to the light skin students, and last but not least the black dark females were all the way in the back behind the black males. So that just showed how much dark females are not only considered a minority for their color, but they are also a double minority because of the gender (female). I felt so degraded, so insulted, so out of place. I mean don’t get me wrong I saw it coming, but it’s not fair to feel like that. The society made it seem like it’s the norm and we should just accept it, but again it’s not fair at all and this is a MAJOR issue that needs to be brought up and solved by us in order to move on for the better.

Race Relations Project : What happens to multiracial people?

I am so glad that you brought up this topic…I have been thinking and talking about this topic with many of my friends lately. I am frankly tired of the black, brown and white topic. I mean I do understand that those are the main distinguished colors or should I say races!!! I also do understand that there are so many other races out there in the world that it would take a lot out of all of us to get to the bottom of them and learn and understand where those people come from and what there thoughts are about the world, society and everything. But I feel like we really need to make an effort to start talking about those other races…I am a person who has traveled a lot in my life so far and I have met people of different races, ethnicity ,religion, culture…Everyday of my life; and all those people have a story to tell, just like all of us do, they have been victims of racism, prejudice, discrimination, civil wars …just like us and it would be nice if we could talk about them as well or let them talk and let us listen to learn about them, from them. I think it would be very faire…So far I feel like we’ve been talking about the same thing every class, to a point where I even feel like Sam keeps on repeating himself. This class is called Race Relations; not just black and white relations, so we should be more open to every races. I mean we all know so much about the whole black and white stories and issues that will never end unfortunately, so it definitely would not hurt us to talk about Asians, Latinos, Spanish people, Arabic people… I myself come from different places in Africa, not just one country, but two to three countries and I have different experiences and stories that I would love to share, but I feel like we are not given much chances or support to talk about these different topics, which I think would make the class so much more interesting. I am not saying that the class isn’t interesting, but I am saying that it could be more interesting if we spiced it up some more with these different topics. I feel like this is one of the reasons why people in the United States are so Ignorant about what’s out there in the world, because the media and schools tempt to limit the amount of information given to the students, when if they are going to touch a broad topic, I suggest that they hit every details, every category even if it would take long, at least the students will be well informed at the end and they will be much more ready for a adventure if they decide to leave their country or continent one day.

Race Relations Project : Fired for a Scarf

YOU SEE!!! IT’S STUFF LIKE THIS, THAT PISSES ME THE HELL OFFFFFF….I mean what kind of Nonsense is this???? This society and the people within it REALLY IRK MY SOUL right about now. I mean if they had a problem with it they could have told her from the get go that she could not work there to save her the time wasted and the humiliation. They should all be sued for Unfairness, Discrimination, Racism, Injustice… You name it, but Assapppp!!! And how DARE them?!?! They have the Audacity to threaten her life for trying to speak up!?!? I am so fed up its not even funny. How can people be so Cruel and so Heartless?? Why can’t people accept others just the way they are?? Is it a crime to want to follow your religion Or to just be different from others?? Companies should remain neutral when it comes to be associated with cultures and practices. I am so glad that these ladies were courageous enough to come out and talk about this type of discrimination so people who think that racial discrimination only happens when it’s about black and white people understand that there are all types of discriminations. This is so PATHETIC!!! OMG! I am so mad right now I need to calm down…What’s up with this world?? What’s going on through people’s mind?? What do they get out of it?? I can not wait to see what Abercrombie’s and Hollister’s spokespeople have to say about this, because I really don’t think they have a way around this. What happened to the girl was deliberate discrimination. She obeyed the color rule for her headscarf and seemed to be a good worker, yet corporate wanted to get rid of her just because she dressed differently than other people. People should take a stand and let companies like Abercrombie and Hollister know that they are not going to support companies like them who discriminate against different races and cultures. It is very unfair to tell this woman when she applied for the job that she would be able to wear her scarf and then tell her out of no where that she no longer will be able too. I believe Abercrombie and Hollister are racist companies. The majority of there employees are white and they hire very few minority employees. They should be PUNISHED EXTREMELLY HARD for their actions, because it’s not like it’s the first, second or third times that they committed an act like this…It has come to my attention that these two companies have been know for Horrible acts like this for many years, so they definitely have NO EXCUSES What So Ever. This is supposed to be a FREE country and they should RESPECT it whether they like it or not Damn It!!!!

Race Relations Project : LGBT Class - Question Three

This Society is so CORRUPTED!!! This is what I call HYPOCRISY!!! I can’t take it anymore. I don’t understand why people care so much about what people think about them. Just because growing up they have always been taught to get into a relationship with the opposite sex they think that they have the right to judge others on where they stand with their sexual orientation. I would Like for every person out there to sit down and think to yourself “How would you feel if someone told you that the way you are comfortable living is wrong, it’s confusing ..etc???” I mean everyone on this earth has his or her own way of finding their happiness with a significant other, and if that means that the person is happy when they are with a man and a woman then SO BE IT!!! Let them be! It is nobody’s place or right to pick someone’s destiny, and the reason for me using “destiny” is because that’s someone’s life we are talking about and it’s affecting them for the rest of their life. I feel as people should not worry about it unless the person tries to force it up on them, but if the person is just living their life and they are not on your way, then keep it moving and leave them alone. They know Damn right who they are, where they stand with their sexuality, and who they want to be with. It is none of your business. The society just needs to back off and people need to start having a mind of their own instead of following other’s footsteps and what they call the “Norm” that they believe its man and woman, not man and man or woman and woman, nor one person wanting both. Well if that is the norm to you then you must be blind. Because the norm is that you love whomever you want, whenever you want and however you want. People just need to STOP with the whole “STEREOTYPING” what happened to “EQUALITY?” and the whole “love people for who they are?” Someone stated earlier that “Those who judge make it so damn hard for people to just be themselves sexually, mentally, physically, emotionally, and etc. This is why sometimes people lie about their sexual orientations and everything else about themselves. Damn if a person wants to be homosexual, bisexual, or heterosexual, then so be it. Who are they hurting? Love has no eyes, color, gender, or race. They are not confused! We who judge are. “This is BEYOND TRUE!!! As Sam said in class, people all tend to have some bisexuality in them, but some experience stronger feelings than others. To tell you the truth, I didn’t even need Sam to say that in class in order to believe this statement… Seriously if you think about it it’s plain and simply true, I always believed this statement. It is not the end of the world…just GET OVER IT!!! and leave others alone...As long as they are HAPPY that’s all that MATTERS!!!

Race Relations Project : All That is Solid Melts Into Air -- Including Our Words

I was once told that “language is your identity—it defines you”. “Language has power”. At first it didn’t hit me as much; I didn’t take the time to think about what was behind this message or the meaning of it. Now That I saw this video about a language disappearing forever with the last speaker who I hope her soul is in a better place at peace, including approximately 7,000 other languages that are also supposed to disappear eventually. I Think I understand what the message was, I mean through out your language you get to tell stories about your ancestors, stories about how it started and where it came from, learn about your cultures and traditions, just the value of it, and at the end you just see that it defines YOU; who your are. I believe that this lady should be seen or taken as a “monument, a living legend.” In other words she held the key to the last generation of an ancient language in India's Andaman Islands. As a matter of fact, every last survivor of an ancient language or tribe should be recognized just like the statues or should I say treasure that was left behind by our ancestors and are now placed in Museums for people to learn the stories about them. Don’t get me wrong... I am not saying to put her body there, I am just saying to recognize these legends because they were part of history, part of this world of ours, they started things and left them for every next generation to follow up and finish what they started. I wonder how were they able to translate what the old lady was saying if she was the last and only person who spoke that language? It’s amazing how they were able to tape her like they knew she was going to die soon. How did people understand what she wanted? Why didn’t people around her try to learn her language? Just so many questions running through my mind. I admit that it is very sad that people don’t take things like this too seriously. This is how we lose our identity. Now I understand why at first when my sisters and I didn’t understand nor talked our father’s language (Malinke) a language from Guinea, Conakry in West Africa; it hurt my grandmother so bad, because she felt like the values and the traditions were not being passed down to her descendants, and that is a horrible feeling to see something you value so much fade away. I mean my sisters and I eventually learned the language but I feel like it’s not the same, there is more behind it, more about the history and only my great, great ancestors would be the ones to best explain them because all my Grandmother and father have been doing is telling us things that they were told, but the thing is that you never know if they are adding things just to make it interesting or if they forgot something. So I guess at the end, even if the last speaker of a language still exists, the value of the language still vanishes little by little as the years go by and new generations come. But we need to take it into consideration that this is a serious matter that we need to focus more on.

in conclusion, we the human on this planet, on this earth just need to come together, come to our senses and fix ourselves and our world, then we will be able to portray it in the media ( movies,news,shows….). I don’t blame David Brooks for his comment…Everyone has their opinion.

When I think about the whole coming to the rescue!!! Yes, I have seen lots of movies where the white man comes and become the “hero” but at the same time I have seen some movies where the black man came to the rescue as well but that’s only in sport movies like “Coach Carter” and maybe some others but everything else, the white man is always the “hero” and it gets annoying and old but that’s how our society is portrayed. People need to understand that we need to come together to fix things, it can’t only be one person doing the job which Is what happened in the movie. Eventhough the main character was looked up on as the “Hero” he still needed everybody to come together and have faith because he would not have done it alone and that’s just a fact. He at least was open minded enough to accept another culture, tradition, food, spirits and ect… in his life which was the way to go.

Like I said before I don’t go to the movies to think too much, I just go to enjoy myself and watch someone’s “art” as I would call it. But if I was to think racially, I would say that I didn’t need Brooks to bring up this subject to see it, because again coming from another country I have seen white people or just people coming from where they came from just to disturb my land, but not just my land of course they came in many other lands and they disturb people’s peace and harmony just to claim properties and using force and weapons against the people when they would refuse to give up their land. Those people did not understand how much their land meant to them or shall I say our land, I don’t think they ever put in mind that those people they were torturing could have been themselves, but again because of money, power and technical weapons they just didn’t care and they just came to do what they call their job. So yes I could really relate to this movie.

I am sorry but this whole racial thing is driving me insane. Why can people just watch a movie and just call it a day. I mean yes it’s good to have your opinion and share it, but it is not that serious, unless you make it be that serious. I mean don’t get me wrong, yes, I usually analyze things very closely, and if I was to stay on the subject I would say that I agree just a TINY bit with David Brooks, I repeat just a TINY bit, everything else was just his opinion and I won’t penalize him for it because we all have our own views. But I personally watched Avatar and I fell in love with it at first site. I would tell you though that at first I wasn’t convinced enough to see it, just because I felt like it was just one of those long science fiction corny movies, but I started getting good feedbacks about it and I am a person who likes to see things and judge them for myself, so I decided to go watch it and I thank God for giving me the strength and chance to see it. It really is mind blowing, you just learn so much, and being from another country and also being very involved in my culture I could relate to the story and the foreigners in the movie.

I have never in this life of mine heard of a law as ridiculous as this one. I mean how can you go so low to a point of wanting to tell someone how to dress, it's like telling them how to live their life. I am a Muslim woman, but i don't wear the Hijab, but that's because I chose not to, and there is nothing wrong with that. I believe that my religion and my relationship with God is between God and I, it’s just in my heart, and I believe that this is how these women feel as well, it’s just that they prefer to show it, and there is also nothing wrong with that. I have met many women who wear the Hijab, even my sister does but that does not separate us, It does not mean that we are really related then or that we have different belief, I just take it as she has her style and I have my style. I was born in an Arabic country and again not all women wear Hijabs but it's just natural, at the end you learn to live with it and you learn to accept people for who they are and how they present themselves. I don't see it as the French government, or any other government's right to be able to dictate what clothing its citizens should wear. It angers me to see how prejudice this world can be, and reason why I say this world is because I know that France isn't the only country that has problems with women wearing Burqas, even in the United States of America I have met many people who complain this situation. My theory is see people the way they are and let them be, as long as they do not harm you or threaten you or even force you to believe in what they believe in, you need to just let them be. It's just not fare at all, we claim that all human are equal and that there is the freedom of speech and freedom to express yourself the way you would like to, but we don't give each other the same rights, we always find a way to bother somebody's life for no reason. I completely agree with the woman in the video who said that “they are only following their religious beliefs and France should respect that." We have to admit that since the 911 tragedy people are intimidated by Muslims in today's society more than ever. Yes, there are some people who don't feel that way but you have to admit that there are a lot of false thoughts and ideas about Muslims. And now France wants to take it out on Muslim women, which they have no right, nor business in doing so.

Race Relations Project : The Solution to the Race Dilemma

I totally agree with your comment, you took the words out of my mouth. This world we live in today is so corrupted it is just sad and pathetic. We’ve gone too far to be going back. So apparently, and suddenly color, my color better yet does not matter? Why? Why me? It is just color, I emphasize. Why can’t people just stay who they are I in this world? Today so many different societies are full of different cultures, background and religions. However should skin color have to do with any of the above? Each time I ask myself this question it never seems to make any sense to me. This is the reason for all my ‘why’s. I have a cousin who is half black and half white, and yet to me, he still my cousin. Before my mother told me his father was white, I felt just the same as I did when I actually saw him! The love I had for this child, a gift to the world, I believe, was ever so strong. Now, am I supposed to change my mind because of what differentiates us, what I am actually trying to ask, is whether I should love him less? If the answer to this is yes, then I will never stop asking ‘why’ because no matter what, no response that is affirmative to my question will ever make sense to me. In today’s society, many magazines portray the best models as the lights and fairest ones. Why should this be? I could be have more beautiful features than another lady my age, whom happens to be in white skin, but the fact the media has such a negative portrayal on skin color, it suddenly becomes blinding to the rest of the world what true beauty really is. Thus, color can indeed be blinding! My older sister once told me that she thought that all barbies were supposed to be white. She never knew that black dolls exist. Though when she did happen to see one, she simply thought that it was ugly. Again, I ask myself why? Who had taught this to her? She did not even stop to study the doll’s features or beauty before she judged the doll? Why is this? I blame it on society and the media. We need o learn to accept all colors, (and body sizes as well). In order to more on, we must embrace all cooler. I Africa, we have light people (in Sudan), and very dark people(still in Sudan as well), and it is common to everyone, hence everyone is used to it. Skin color should not be a barrier in this earth. Everyone was created differently, and we have the potential to accept everyone as they are!
