Womanist Musings : What Does It Mean to be a Black Man in America

White male here, and to me this speaks of how white amerikkka is inherently built on genocide, bondage and exploitation; about how it has a stranglehold on the resources the rest of humanity not only deserves, but needs to survive; about how amerikkkan greed is cutting off everyone else's air; about how patriotism is inherently coded racism; about how unless amerikkka is sundered, and white amerikkkans made to pay for their crimes a hundredfold, there can be neither peace nor justice for humanity. And I say that it's exactly right.

Womanist Musings : Would You Make a Vagina The Star of Your Wedding Day?

I'd say that's arguably feminist due to putting an overt spotlight on the "traditional" emphasis of sexual ownership in marriage, but I suppose that other meanings are possible. That and the thought of it being a pure shock value piece occurred to me. I wonder, is it even meant to be worn, or is it intended to stay on a display stand as art?

Living in a finished basement is the best cooling factor I've yet found ... especially as a northern USian living in Virginia. Right now, it's as cool as an autumn day in my basement.

Womanist Musings : So, to straight, cis people who support GBLT rights - what do I owe you?

Agreed ... especially on an Ally's Handbook ... I really could've used one a few times ... especially when I was getting the first few units of my 101 on (which, after a couple years and reading dozens of books and hundreds of articles on multiple axes of discrimination, I still feel like I'm doing). And I agree that it's an ally that should write/compile it.

I remember my dad, a hardcore atheist, telling Mormons that he'd accept their materials to peruse at his leisure IF they drank a can of caffeinated soda in front of him (Mormons ... at least the stricter ones, are forbidden to have caffeine).

Womanist Musings : The Native Americans

No, no doubt at all, even if there had been any in my mind before I watched this. I don't think anyone actually listening would be able to deny it after the very first bit. It's horrible that on top of all the horrors wrought by the American government(that those in power STILL cover up in many cases), that there are more First Nations remains in museums than living First Nations people. Of course, I find the practice of institutions retaining human remains at all appalling. And I apologize in advance for any oddness or incoherence in this post, it being 2AM local ...

Womanist Musings : Walmart Plans to Sell Anti-Aging Makeup to Tweens

Seriously?!? WTF, Mate?! I see this more as an indicator towards how fucked-up our culture is than anything else. I mean, Wal-Mart is all sorts of Greedy!Evil, but they're not gonna do something like this for the lulz ... they expect it'll sell, and they'll be right. Of course, advertising and whatnot has really intensified our culture's obsession to youth-and-beauty. Add "Fuck our overhyped, hypercapitalist, kyrarchical, and materialistic culture" to the "Fuck it" list

Womanist Musings : 43 Days in Jail For Beating A Black Woman While Using Racial Slurs

Damn ... just damn. 43 days is a joke sentence ... it's more justice theater than anything. Just a big show of "See, we're punishing him, wink nudge". I think 20-to-life would've been more reasonable.

Womanist Musings : Spark Of Wisdom: I Am Not Your Gay Couple

The only time a person should EVER ask to take a picture of a couple kissing (specifically, as opposed to candid snapshots of friends and relatives) is at events celebrating the couple's couple-y-ness (weddings, anniversary parties, MAYBE big social dances like the Prom), and/or a portrait-grade photo shoot. I'm up in the air on the whole "cute" thing ... maybe it's got different regional connotations, but I've seen it used for all manner of couples. That said, if someone has made clear their dislike of the term, don't use it to describe them.

Womanist Musings : Dear Multicultural Canadians Do Something Abour Your Racist Children

None ... I meant that the school should explain why it was wrong to the offender and discuss the matter with his or her parents BEFORE expelling him. And yes, I said expelled, as in for up to one year, with the option of criminal and/or civil charges if you wanted to pursue them. Of course, if the child says ANY sort of slur again, it's a permanent expulsion with mandatory criminal charges. And I've assumed - rightly or wrongly - that zero tolerance implies that the maximum possible penalty is applied at the first HINT of a violation.

Womanist Musings : 9 Inch Heels: The Hobbling of Women or Just a Fashion Trend?

Sweet stars, those should be banned under the Geneva convention because they're torture devices, pure and simple. What other point could there be for THAT?!? I mean, in addition to the obvious, it also would wreck your arch, is *horribly* balanced (toe-heavy to the point of nigh-immobility), and looks designed to make a woman topple. That is the exact opposite of a good shoe.

Agreed ... the school should have at very least sat the child down with a guidance counselor and had hir explain why this was unacceptable - discussing not just the racial implications of the word, but the nature of insults in general. And only after such a discussion would any consequences be handed down. I'll agree with Russ that this child's parents ALSO need a good heart-to-heart with the principal and guidance counselor. In fact, that should be S.O.P. for a first offense.

Womanist Musings : Voting in the U.S. - Why We Must!

Great article - I'm still shocked and disgusted - though hardly surprised - that anyone would make an ad like that. It seems that certain parts of the Tea Party consider ignorance a virtue as well. That said, voting is only the beginning of political involvement. On another note, I'm gonna have to hold my nose voting ... we lack a decent candidate ... 6th Virginia Congressional has a Gingrich-era Republican running virtually unopposed - there's a teabagger "Libertarian" and a tolerable self-funded independent. I dunno if I wanna vote for him or write in someone decent.
