I think it makes sense given the setting: The Federation is making first contact with new planetary-level civilizations all the time, so I'd imagine there is a lot of trade going on with people who aren't very familiar with the major governments of the series. "Here's some very rare stuff" is probably easier to swing than "Here's some not-forged-I-swear currency issued by the perfectly-stable-I-swear government of the Ferengi Alliance".

When I commissioned this episode, I was mainly thinking about the "punchline" at the end with Quark sitting in the pod yelling "nothing but worthless GOLD!" Rewatching the episode got me thinking a bit about the economics of Trek. Memory Alpha doesn't have any info on why latinum would be worth anything, so it may just be valuable because of its rarity and because people decided it should be valuable, like real-world gold. I also noticed how when Quark gave his speech about keeping Morn's seat filled, Federation-raised O'Brien and Bashir completely fell for it.

My favorite let's player is Spoiler Warning, who are a bit unorthodox. They're a group that plays through games and comments on them from a game design and writing point of view, while also screwing around and breaking stuff.

Since it's International Womens Day, I'll share some of my favorite webcomics created by womens.

Mary Cagle is the writer and artist for three different webcomics (one is on hiatus) in addition to her day job. All of them are completely different and cool.

Kiwi Blitz

In the future, ace competitive mech pilot Steffi Frohlich receives a top-of-the-line kiwibird-shaped for her birthday. Instead of taking it into competitions, she decides to become a superhero and use it to fight crime. KB is currently on hiatus but is due to come out of it soon.

I have a related question: I'm thinking of starting to commission a heavily-serialized show, but I'm worried there could be a problem with Mark remembering everything that's going on if he only watches one episode per month. Those of you who have watched Mark do serialized shows in Patreon commisions, do you think he keeps up with them well?
