The vast expenditure can best be sold to the electorate if the money spent is spent within this country. Basic economics suggests that 100 billion (HS2) spent within the country will provide a colossal boost to the economy. It's all part of the circulating fund that the Government can tax time and time again, every time it changes hands. If we buy trains from Germany or Japan, and steel from China, we'll be bloody mad. Such imports may be cheaper in the first place, but those funds are gone - to boost other economies, never to be taxed again. Now we're out of the EU we're no longer compelled to put such contracts out to all-comers. Hurray, hurray, hurray. Just think of the R&D we can encourage, and the employment of thousands of up-skilling workers. It's basic stuff. Can Boris and his team possibly think any alternative might be sensible?
