"Your relationship to Chris prevents you from being objective." - As does your inability to accept that anyone that becomes a law enforcement officer might have a higher motivation other than revenue generation. I know that I have some bias because I knew Chris Kilcullen, (BTW - I noticed that until I mentioned that he was my friend, you referred to Chris as "Officer Kilcullen", but now you refer to him as Chris, nice switch) but I can admit it, and I will be the first to admit that there are SOME police in EVERY state/county/city that seem to have no goal other than writing tickets (Coburg is an EXCELLENT example). However, according to you, there is no other purpose for law enforcement officers in Oregon EXCEPT to generate revenue. So your bias prevents you from being objective or seeing any point of view beyond your own. I guess we must agree to disagree.

"KATU must have corrected the spelling in the article..." - And why would KATU have anything to do with it? It is on the KVAL website, and at the top pf the page it says the story was written by "By KVAL.com Staff" "He sadly missed the mark. The bullet is supposed to be centered in the head, not just nick the head." And Martinez was using Melody Mickel as a human shield, so maybe there was no chance to take a clear "centered in the head" shot, that crap works fine on the target range and in training situations, but not so easy to do with an agitated, moving target. You weren't there, so don't assume you know everything about the situation. Plus, they might have been under orders to end the situation without loss of life, if possible. And if the sniper had killed Martinez, people would have been asking, "Why did he have to kill him, couldn't he have just wounded him??" It is always easy to sit in judgement from the comfort of our chair after the incident is over, but unless you have been in the same situation, faced with the same choices and rules of engagement, then don't judge him, please.

"The traffic revenue these COPs generate should serve as self evidence." - Wrong, that does not make it the sole reason for their existence, as you seem so emphatic to prove. He pulled her over because she was driving recklessly, and almost hit him, as well. His trying to stop her had NOTHING to do with generating revenue, and everything to do with her driving being a danger to the public. "He was caught off guard, because he was not professional" Nice ASSumption. And so, if he had dismounted from his motorcycle and immediately drawn his weapon and aimed it t the lady, would it have made him "professional? I went to school with Chris, he was always a very caring person, and he carried that attitude with him when he became a police officer. He switched to traffic enforcement so that he had more regular hours and time to spend with his wife and children, NOT so he could specifically "set up speed traps and get more money from motorists", which seems to be your fixation with police. He was caught off guard because he was a nice guy and tried to treat everyone with courtesy when he approached them and talked to them, rather than being confrontational. "I am sure the bullet went exactly where she was looking (aimed) when she pulled the trigger." - Oh yes, this lady with a handgun took enough time to aim for the gap in the body armor that would be the only possible place to go through and hit his heart, and was able to see that spot perfectly in an instant through his uniform shirt. It's amazing the marksman skills you're willing to credit someone with that has mental health issues and just didn't want to be pulled over, vs. a trained officer with many hours of experience and shooting range practice. Which leads to the next point: "I am sure the bullet went exactly where she was looking (aimed) when she pulled the trigger." - Oh goodness, yes, let's lump all Oregon law enforcement officers together in a stereotyped description, NONE of them could POSSIBLY be professional, only in OTHER states. (And if you were living in another state, I'm sure you would be saying the same thing about them) "Can we agree that Kilcullen was pursuing Kidd for a traffic violation and was killed with a single shot fired from a sidearm? " - Yes. I have agreed with those facts from the start.

I never said he was a "traffic REVENUE cop", so no, I do not agree with you. And the only reason she was a "better shot" was the fact that he was caught off-guard and the shot happened to hit a spot not covered by his vest, purely by chance, since her shot was unaimed. If she had raised the gun high enough to actually aim it, he would have had enough warning to draw his weapon and fire.

LOL, can you imagine if that wording was used in the radio traffic between the incident commander and the sniper? It would've sounded almost like a decision to use the bathroom or not: IC: "Do you have the subject in sight?" Sniper: "Roger, I have a clear target, request permission to take the sh**." IC: "Permission granted, take the sh**, I repeat, take the sh**!"

"He was killed for setting an economic speed trap, " - And where did you get that BS from, did you ever even read about what happened in his killing, or did you just ASS-u-me and twist things to your own beliefs, that all cops are out to write speeding tickets?? The lady who shot him was tailgating him while he was riding and patrolling in traffic, he wasn't "setting an economic speed trap", as your fantasy believes. From the original news story: "According to police, Kidd followed closely behind Kilcullen's motorcycle for a distance before the sedan made an attempt to pass him at Highway 126 and Mohawk Boulevard. "At one point she weaved into his lane of travel and he had to swerve to get out of the way," said Smith. "A witness said she saw [Kilcullen] turn on his lights... and said [Kidd] just took off like a race car." And the rest of the tragic tale continues to sadden, anger and confuse people across the region. Police in Springfield clarified how Friday's fatal shooting of a police officer after a car chase started. Earlier reports that Kilcullen pursued Cheryl Kidd, 56, into Springfield after seeing her run a red light in Eugene were in error. Instead, Springfield Police Chief Jerry Smith said Kidd was tailgating Kilcullen's police motorcycle with her car before passing him on the right. Kilcullen, a traffic enforcement officer, gave chase. Witnesses described Kilcullen catching up to Kidd at a Springfield intersection, only to be killed by a single gunshot." He WAS protecting citizens, and he DID die in the LINE OF DUTY, and you twisting the facts for your own personal beliefs shows that at some point you must have gotten a ticket you felt you didn't deserve, and so "obviously all cops are only trying to "shake down" citizens for money." can be the only explanation for a police officer's death? I'm sorry that you have such a twisted and biased view of law enforcement officers in general, I won't bother trying to explain any truths or facts to you, because obviously you won't believe or listen to anything that doesn't fit in with your preconceived ideas and beliefs.

And what exactly do you mean by that comment? He was enforcing a series of traffic offenses that started in Eugene on I-105 and continued into Springfield. I guess what you're saying is that he should not have pursued the lady and instead let her keep driving recklessly and at high speed? (I also love how I stated a simple fact about which departments have motorcycle officers, and where they can patrol, and got negative votes for doing so. Oops, I guess saying anything that supports law enforcement on this thread is not acceptable...) And to correct a typo from my post above, it should have been OSP, not 'ODP'.

The funny thing is, Lane County Sheriff does not have motorcycle units, Oregon State Police, and the cities of Eugene and Springfield have motorcycle officers, so you probably saw the EPD officers, they often do a speed trap on Beltline, especially between Coburg Rd. and Delta Highway. And to answer your question: Beltline is an expressway/highway, NOT a city street, so it is subject to patrol and enforcement by EPD, SPD, ODP, AND LCSO. And if an officer (or officers) of any of those departments are on that highway and observe a lot of excessive-speed traffic and are not on a priority call, they have every right to enforce the traffic laws on that road.

KVAL - Eugene, OR : Coal trains: Companies seek economic boost, activists fear pollution | Business | Eugene News, Weath

I think a lot of the so-called "informed" protesters don't realize that there have been improvements from the traditional 'bottom-dump' coal cars. Most cars used in coal transportation these days have a solid bottom with no doors, and are dumped by a rotary-dumping machines, similar to ones used for unloading woodchips at some mills. There are some new coal cars that are still made with bottom doors, but they have greatly-improved mechanisms and lock latches to prevent spillage or accidental dumping 'en route' and allow for rapid unloading. For comparison, here are some photo links of the different hoppers in question: Old-style/”traditional” coal hopper: http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx... Modern bottom-dump coal hopper, called "Rapid-Dischage" hoppers (also capable of rotary-dumping): http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx... http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx... Here are two good examples of modern rotary-dump coal hoppers: http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx... (AC&F ‘Coalveyor’) http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx... (Bethgon/Johnstown ‘Coalporter’)

Well said!! And in addition to that, the coal trains that would arrive in Eugene on UP rails and go to Coos Bay on Coos Bay Rail Link tracks would move at relatively slow speeds compared to "mainline" train speeds. Unit coal trains already travel through Portland, OR and Vancouver, WA from the Columbia Gorge on the BNSF and UP railroads to several destinations, one of which is Centralia, WA which has a power plant that is coal-fired. I have been to Centralia and the Vancouver, WA rail yards many times, and there has been NO visible/noticeable coal dust "deposits" or any spills, observed at EITHER location!

I find it interesting that in the same story it says, "The body of Jeffery Scott Bension, 39, of Roseburg, was discovered off of Louis Creek Road in southern Douglas County", and then it goes on to say, "They have identified the man, but are not releasing his name at this time.
