The Black Sphere : Holy Hiram Revels, Batman

blknred said: Ask any black person if they would vote for a white republican over a black democrat even if they were more closely aligned ideologically with the republican. I'll bet you won't hear too many affirmative answers. If that doesn't sound like race over ideology then I don't know what does. --------- Do you think most blacks would vote for a black (or any other color) Republican over a white (or any other color) Democrat? Can you point to a modern (say, the past five decades) example of more blacks supporting a Republican than a Democrat? If not, then surely we can agree that idealogy matters, but race doesn't. Racist is a popular slur not because racism is common, but because it is so repellant to most Americans that its a label nobody wants.

I can't point you towards any one issue, but I can point out that blacks tend to vote for people who are quite liberal on social issues (members of the CBC are well to the left of most Democrats), so its logical to assume that most either lean liberal on social issues, place less value on them then they do other issues, or don't believe that government is the tool needed to resolve social issues.

Social conservatives in what sense? Most blacks oppose gay marriage but antipathy towards guns (another social conservative issue) is even stronger (guns aren't the problem, family breakdown is, but that is another discussion). Its true that black liberals aren't called Uncle Toms, but conservatives (black and white) are happy to characterize liberals blacks as slaves on the plantation so clearly both parties are perfectly happy to throw racially charged insults at blacks who don't support them.

I think you should give up the Democrats are racist gambit. No one buys it because in modern politics the evidence simply isn't there. In modern politics the dividing lines are idealogical, not racial. The only racial component is that parties and their advocates feel freerer to disrespect people on the other side, especially blacks. A black conservative isn't a man with conservative principles, he is a dupe or a house slave. A black liberal isn't a man with liberal principles, he is a dupe or too afraid to leave the plantation.

The Black Sphere : Is Conservative Friend an Oxymoron

So go away. You are clearly offended by black conservatism so this is a website which isn't going to give you any joy. I don't always see eye to eye with Kevin Jackson, but his point that presidents get mocked and make the subjects of bizarre, often offensive conspiracy theories is a perfectly valid one. Jump into politics, half the country will dislike you if not hate you. Its sad and ugly, but its par for the course. I'm not saying that racists aren't among Obama's opponents (of course they are), my point is that most of his opponents are motivated by politics. Remember the protests which killed Clinton's healthcare proposal before it was born or the protests against Bush's proposed immigration reform? The overwhelming majority of Americans care more about idealogy than race (people who despise Obama love Allen West and vice versa). Its also worth noting that Obama got a bigger chunk of the white vote then Clinton, Gore or Kerry. http://www.nytimes.com/2008/11/03/us/politics/03c...

The Republican Party is a political party seeking to win seats in order to carry out its agenda, it isn't a social club. Akin offered the most ignorant and offensive defense of his widely held pro-life stance that it was possible to make. If he wasn't a longstanding Republican, I'd suspect he was a trojan horse, as it is I have to conclude he is merely a useful idiot. His opponent Claire McCaskill spent $1,700,000 promoting his candidacy during the Republican primary because she believes that Akin is her only hope of retaining her seat. And that is why she has condemned his remarks but has also encouraged him to stay in the race. Its worth keeping in mind that if Akin had resigned before 5 PM Tuesday he could have been replaced with a stronger candidate, but instead he decided to continue. Funny that.

The Black Sphere : Romney Makes America Consider Going White

Putting two white guys on the ticket isn't much of a risk because there is little evidence race (as opposed to idealogy) drives voting patterns. Blacks are liberal on many issues, so one won't see conservatives of any color winning elections in black communities in the forseeable future (show me an elected conservative black and I'll show you someone with a majority white district). Hispanic voting seems to be heavily influenced by the desire for immigration reform (45% of Hispanics voted for the Republicans in 2004 vs only 33% in 2008 after Bush's immigration proposals were knocked down in 2007). Anyway, Ryan not only has offered detailed plans, but has been an articulate critic of the President's economic failings and thus is a good pick.

The Black Sphere : Gay Agenda v American Agenda

I knew Rosa Parks was involved with the NAACP as a secretary, I didn't know she was their point person on sexual assault cases before that. Her refusing to move from the bus had nothing to do with sexual assault, but that action did mean that both the NAACP and Mrs. Parks decided it would be best to move her from the front lines (at that point it was felt the best thing she could do was be a symbol of nonviolence resistance).

Given your lack of knowledge and lack of solutions, I don't blame you for resorting to baseless personal attacks. In my many posts here and elsewhere, I've never used the words you seek to put into my mouth. Also I've pointed out before what drives people's votes is idealogy, not race. Black conservatives don't win a significantly higher percentage of black votes than white conservatives because what matters is their idealogy, not their race. Of the 40 black Republicans who ran for office in 2010, the few who won did so despite the fact most blacks voted against them.

I'm not talking about metaphorical slavery. I'm talking about men, women and children were delivered to private owners and who lived or died at the whim of said owners. The book I read (though there are others on the same subject I haven't) is only ten bucks on Amazon and its probably at your local library. Why not take a look at it? http://www.amazon.com/Slavery-Another-Name-Re-Ens... Yes, its history, but I find history as fascinating as I find current events.

The Black Sphere : Gay Agenda v American Agenda

Slavery by Another name shows that for thousands of blacks, slavery didn't end with the conclusion of the Civil War (it didn't die out until 1945). Basically, the justice systems of many Southern states worked hand in hand with private industry (large farms and mines) to reinstitute slavery. There were trials (often on spurious charges) involving misdemeanors such as vagrancy (which didn't mean being homeless, it meant not being able to prove that you worked for a white man) in which people were sentenced to pay small fines which were nevertheless more than they could afford. Then a businessman (sometimes the judge himself) would buy the debt and make the person promise to work for him for a set period of time. The slavery system of old gave masters some incentive to maintain the health of their slaves (the longer they lived, the longer they could work for you) but the new system ofterred no such incentive and the per year mortality rate of the new class of slaves far outstripped that of slaves in the past.

I agree with you that Sharpton and Jackson are complaining about an America that no longer exists, but its worth bearing in mind that Jim Crow occured in the living memory of older blacks and that slavery didn't end with the Civil War. Two books I recommend are At The Dark End of the Street and Slavery by Another name. End of the Street is a really fascinating book because while most people (including me prior to the book) see Rosa Parks as a symbol of passive resistance (refusing to move from her bus seat) in fact she was an active leader in the civil rights movement, the NAACP's point woman on rape cases (human nature being what it is, the fact white men could rape black women with no fear of prosecution made life unpleasant for many black woman and girls).

First, I see no point in citing individual cases to buttress my argument unless I am rebutting an absolutist argument (if someone says this never happens one exception is all you need) or making a joke. People like stories (I saw a murder yesterday for the first time, this city is more and more dangerous!) but statistics (the number of murder that happened in the city vs prior years) are less flashy, but more useful. If you honestly believe that anyone in this country doesn't know any single mothers, I don't know what to tell you.
