I remember this movie! Always liked it. I'll have to buy it. Also good is the 7-ups, another NYPD cop movie of same era. Good stuff.

Big Peace : The Nonsense of the Iraq War

I appreciate your perspective and apprciate your service. To your secound paragraph; it seems to me that a quick decision was made to hand off the mission to the State Department and deemphasize the Pentagon running the immediate post battle phase ; most likely because of fear of how things would be seen from the anti-war crowd and too, because State was logical. All the best intentions undone by State though; filled with anti-administration global-thinkers, it seems bad decisions were made at every turn and with General Franks immediate retirement, the Army leadership was inconsistent... and as the anti-war/anti-Bush/ Democrats noticed the opportunity, they pounced and started most of the BS memes that the press gladly magnified for the next 5 years. And of course, the administration never missing an opportunity to turn the other cheek and allow lies to linger and hypocrites to pontificate. I agree with your assessment of Iraq and Iraqis. In my opinion, the region is set for instability and dire straights. A tinderbox...

Big Hollywood : 'Tora! Tora! Tora!' Blu-ray Review: Epic Filmmaking Worthy of Its Subject

short is ok. No offense taken... But, to what extent did the IJN exploit their carriers after Midway. Not much, that's all.... and we very quickly switched gears deploying the jeep carriers and made inroads into much of the central Pacific confining the IJN into fighing closer to home islands. I guess I was too curt. Didn't intend to be. I'll read some more... I thought I had a good grasp of the post-Midway flow, but willing to learn more. I don't think the IJN was "broken", but too, the ability of the IJN to do as they pleased after Midway was curtailed to a great extent and though they fought tough battles thereafter for sure, after summer '42, the conquests were complete and it was a battle of attrition, no?

Well, I'll have to disagree with you on the IJN's capabilities after 1943. They were severely short on fuel and thus did not have the range to affect much of the Pacific. They were a threat for sure, but only in a limited area. They had no real carrier threat after Midway. Individual battles were never a given, but my point was, the IJN, based on what I've read, just didn't have the logistics to fight the growing USN and the end result was never in doubt... it was always the treasure of lives lost to get them to admit defeat.

Good points. I don't think the Japanese underestimated us as much as they were as "racist" as we were. We derided their capabilities and they though themselves ultimately superior in every way. I do not think Yamamoto thought they had a chance, but he was not as rabid as the Army. The Navy was by and large more reluctant to buy into the superior mindset. Agreed the IJN was superior in 1941 and evern through 1942... but that quickly reversed and as our subs finally got good torpedos and we flooded the pacific with jeep carriers and island bases, air superiority soon followed by '43 on. It was never a easy win and the Japanese fought hard all the way... in fact, so hard and determined it was an easy decision to use the bombs as soon as they were available... It was a horrendous war; fought brutally. I think you read more into my view of the movie than I feel towards the War in the Pacific. I do not admire or give credit to the Japanese at all. They were brutal in indoChina and merciless in their conduct in the War... especially the Army. They were a cult that had to be crushed, and we ultimately did so at a high cost on both sides.

Yes... Max Hastings is one of my favorite authors. I've read Armageddon too. Just bought his latest, but haven't started it yet... ( it's large ) " Inferno". Agreed. I may have to watch In Harm's Way again... tonight! Heh. Trying to see what this History Channel special is like and if it's worth tuning away from....

your conclusion is right on. The Japs never had a chance of winning. It was a one-off attack, and within 6 months they were losing the Pacific and within a year, their Navy ceased to be a real threat. It was only a matter of time and how many of us they could kill. I recommend " Retribution" by Max Hastings... a good book that explores this well...

I "thought" I liked Tora Tora Tora as I was building my war movie collection on DVD's a few years back... and my memory failed me. Like I said in one of the above replies, I like In Harms' Way much better. I found TTT too 70's and too "balanced". I want a movie that shows just how the Japs earned our revenge and how we gave it to them. I'll pass on the BluRay.. Thanks for the review though..

THIS. In Harms' Way.. to me, is better than TTT. And because of the less-than-ideal special effects, it is even better.... because the storyline, the acting, the cast, carry the movie, NOT the effects. It is more like watching a play... you know what is going on and willing to suspend the critical eye of realism. I've watched this movie many, many times over the years and it has actually gotten better with age. It is my favorite Pearl Harbor/Navy movie.

Big Hollywood : Countdown to the Oscars: Looking Back at Hollywood’s Worst Communists

I'm going to check out this book. I appreciate the interview and insights. I was sitting here thinking though.... only those of us that have an immediate negative reaction to communism will read this or ponder it. The young do not share a common notion on the evils of facism or communism. They are most likely closer to what Charlie Chaplin quipped.. They know nothing and don't cherish our precious liberties. They only learn from parents or a slow deprogramming after college. Makes me sad.

Big Hollywood : The James Bond Chronicles: 'Thunderball'

I was thinking the same thing. This was the sixties and underwater was everything... I get that the OP is frustrated with a poor script and so much potential left unused, but ... I bought the Bluray version a few months back and watched the whole thing. It was visually stunning. Music great. Fun to watch... but I grew up in the sixties, so that colors my experience and my expectations for the film.

Big Hollywood : Netflix, Redbox, and the Future of Hollywood

I liked the first part of your article because it was instructive. The second part isn't really intuitive. The meat is still on the bone. Why didn't your parents use the streaming method? Internet speed, cost, selection.. To me, the meat still not touched is, too many stores carry the throwaway movies . A certain percentage of the population wants to rent on the spur of the moment, but they don't know what they want to watch... so browsing from a selection is helpful. Too many trash titles offered by Netflix is the reason I don't use them. Too much of the crap you can get right now... the new releases you have to wait for them. I would have liked to see more about how olders embrace or don't, new technology and why. More for another article.

I hope that some serious statements are forthcoming from Governor Perry about how the State of Texas is going to tell the EPA and the Obama Administration where they can take this. It's a political fight they want, and I hope our state politicians are ready to fight. As a Texan, I'm watching and will support a fight. Lets take these Feds on.
Big Peace : Don’t Ask Don’t Tell Repeal: Be Careful What You Ask For

Great post and "most" comments. As a Army vet myself of the early 80's , we knew a few of our barracks-mates were odd, and after I got out of the Army, a former roomate of mine told me ( 8 years after the fact ) that he was gay. But he hid it in the Army and I never knew. He told me the names of others that were too. I never knew and never suspected it. A lot of arguments are made, but to me the biggest is, it has a lot to do with the age range we're dealing with and the need on younger people who are gay to proclaim it and live it to the hilt because it's new and novel and it is so near and dear to who they are.

Big Hollywood : Mike Huckabee Interviews Robert Duvall About America, Sarah Palin, & Living Away from Hollywood

I too have respect for Duvall. Too many strong roles and good acting over a lifetime not to respect a professional and good man. Huckabee.... I am not sold. To me, he's barely tolerable as a TV host and I'm still afraid he is thinking about running again.... I hope not. And that goes for Romney too, but I think he thinks he has a shot.... they have no chance.... and I'm afraid Newt doesn't either. The next GOP nominee better be a libertarian/conservative/constitutionalist to gain the support of the great middle of America that has had enough of Big Washington Federal BS Government overreach... but that's my opinion...

I think too, a PC, or even anti-american Hollywood can't just be explained away by trying to angle for wide foreign audiences... because I would argue, that foreign audiences will accept Americanisms in our films BECAUSE they're made here. Just like we accept British or French or whatever touches in foreign films. It's teachable... tough cookies if you are offended by an American biased or friendly film... don't see it. Plenty of people will. Hollywood seems to largely hate most of Americana and wants to be "above all that". Well, Americana and promoting those ideals are exactly where the money is and they are just refusing to do it out of ideology.

Big Hollywood : Today's Open Thread

Lots of face-time on Big Hollywood for sure!! I just watched this movie two nights ago. ( own the DVD). I've seen it several times over the years and it's a favorite of mine. One thing that hit me as I watched the other night was how well the movie was put together. It is an outstanding example of a movie made for adults and made at an adult level. What I mean is, the characters don't overly explain themselves for this or that. The plot is multi-layered and rings true. The most attractive male character has the most glamorous veteran experience of the three, but also carries the greatest post-separation distress and the tough slog to find work. He goes back to work where he swears he'll never return, only to be fired. That story-line enough is worthwhile but is framed well by the others. I could go on and on, but you guys get the jist. Great movie.
