Blog Cabin : Week Two: Blog Cabin 2015 Construction Update

First thank you for the wonderful pictorial update of the construction progress. The write up and captions really provide a great explanation of the whys to make the pictures more meaningful. Looks like this will be the ultimate "cabin in the woods". Thanks for excellent design, progress and detailed updates.

Since there will likely be acoustic absorption on some of the ceiling it would be nice if there was r-15 insulation in walls to isolate noise sources from "quiet" places like bedrooms and office/den areas.

Doubt that you could get one like that for less than 600k USD. With all of that teak decking I can imagine that the rest of the appointments are top notch and that even in fresh water it requires a lot of maintenance.

Completely off topic. First Welcome to the war of words and ideas. Will appreciate your input, especially on items that are questions or suggestions. Might be overwhelming at first, but hopefully you have am intern who could help you. Second, can you arrange for the winner to get a ride or two on that beautiful sailboat as passenger or as crew? Thanks for listening.

Thank you. That was a pretty big hole for a septic tank. I guess that was what was required for that location. Thank you again.

J guess that the critics of the cabin design have never lived in WV, VA, NC, GA, TN, etc. where the original cabins were built back in the day. I realize that it is not the norm, but some pretty "cabins" show up in some of the real estate shows about AK. Not a critic of your opinions, just wanted to point out that people on the left coast should be careful when they throw stones.

Thank you for the info. Did you happen to see what went into the hole before the started filling it in? Was it piping for a terra based heating and air conditioning system? Thanks, Frank

I believe that the entire foundation was replaced because there was at least one picture that showed that it had caved in somewhat. That would have necessitated digging the hole out a bit so the forms could be put in. A poured foundation should provide a nice dry basement if proper drain relief is provided around he base of it to reduce the water pressure on the footer and foundation.

Open shelving is good as long as they have the shelf surfaces made from or covered by a solid material. Wire shelves are a PITA for many bottles and boxes and need 1/8" plastic sheets on them to make a stable surface for all containers.

Hi, I was probably the one complaining about most blog cabin designs for their lack of accommodation for mobility impaired folks. The result is always the same blog cabin, dream home or smart home. No consideration for wheelchairs or walkers. I mean 3 foot wide doors, pocket doors, straight staircases, porches with ramps, etc. are the things that could help. As I have mentioned before the changes only have to allow for easy installs, they don't have to actually put the stuff in. Another pet peeve is this new idea of putting the toilets in closets that significantly impede getting wheelchair or walker folks on and off the toilets. One day perhaps there will be universal building codes that requires such functionality in new builds or significant re-builds.

I hate to be negative, but I think the designers have done their best to maximize wasted space in this floor plan. The foyer, with it's funnel walls looses space behind the refrigerator. The area that is between the foyer and the Master suite is for???? There are too many things that I see as wasted space that could be used as storage or added to rooms or closets. Sorry guys, but I think the original floor plan with just a few mods had better space utilization.

One of the disadvantages of having a house with one level built into the mountain side is the loss of windows on some of the walls. Would be nice to use solar tubes to bring sunlight down from the roof to the lower levels.
