I’m thankful the officer survived and is getting better. I hope he is back on the job soon. That said I hope these guys are positively identified soon and STOPPED. If you think that seems harsh or that I’m just pro law enforcement, remember: These guys purposely targeted someone obviously known (a uniformed officer in a CHP vehicle) to be armed, trained to shoot back and by vocation is a protector of the public. What do you think will happen if their next target is someone without any of the above qualities? As various governments in California progressively remove our ability to protect ourselves they make our state a “target rich environment” for thugs who want easy prey.

BakersfieldNow.com : Question rise over supervisors\' salary hike | Local & Regional News | Bakersfield Now - News, Weath

On principle I am against ANY elected official “voting” themselves a pay raise. If they are doing a good job the voters that put them in office can vote them a raise, the money comes out of our pickets, right? Continuing with that logic, on every election ballot there should be a standing item where voters can decrease the elected officials pay by “x” amount. That way even if they stay in office voters can at least reduce their pay when they are doing a lousy job of representing us.

Hope the daughter is OK, too bad she didn't shoot the intruders. A lot of people are wishy-washy on this subject but I figure if a trespassers are going to take the time to kick-in your door to enter your home they are likely to do worse to whoever they find inside.

Senator Marco Rubio, why do we need to "create legal immigration" when we already have it? DHS statistics show that over 25 million immigrants obtained Legal Permanent Resident status between 1980-2009 and that over 9 million of that group became naturalized citizens. THE SYSTEM WORKS!

Make no mistake, it is for the money! Even when they say "Its for the children", ITS FOR THE MONEY! At the most basic level what all politicians and most bureaucracies want is more money and power. Money buys influence which gathers power, power gives control over you to steal (fee, tax, confiscate (whatever you want to call it)) more money, repeat cycle. It is like a drug to them and once tasted they want more. If you ever find an politician or government agency that does not want more money or power, you have entered the Twilight Zone...

BakersfieldNow.com : Locals weigh in on role politics played in Giffords shooting | Bakersfield Now - News, Weather and S

If the gunman was crazy (or not), who benefits from this action? It is not congresswoman Giffords who was more centrist than robot Democrat; she is pro Second Amendment (gun rights), strongly believes we should secure our borders and is not anti-military. It is not the conservatives, especially The Tea Party movement as they are being labels the right-wing nutjobs that caused the shooting (at least according to the left-wing nutjobs). There is even some talk about using the Tea Party as scapegoats the way President Clinton used the militias and pro-gunners for the OKC bombing back in his day. It won’t be the First Amendment if what you want to say is against the current administration and definitely not the Second Amendment as the anti-gunners from all over will be out in force. So, with this admittedly limited list of what people, groups, causes or principles that do not benefit from this horrible event, who does?

My sympathies to the Kotarac family. However, I want to take exception to Carrillo’s statement: "I don't think a drunk person could have gotten on a roof and torn off a chimney" as one of the stupidest comments I have seen in a long time. Being “under the influence” almost by definition means a person’s judgment is negatively affected and sites like www.darwinawards.com are full of people whose last acts were taken when intoxicated.

CSMonitor: Innovation : Bloom box: What 60 Minutes left out / The Christian Science Monitor - CSMonitor.com

Sounds good, but still mostly hype and not near enough fact to make a judgment call. All “generators” need some kind of energy or fuel to transform into energy you can use: light for Photovoltaic cells, moving air for wind generators, burning petrochemicals for most engines and even splitting atoms for nuclear steam powered generators, all with various efficiencies and trade-offs. Not one of these methods produces more energy than it consumes but some are easier or cheaper to use, some produce more unpleasant or even toxic byproducts during use, some will run out far sooner than the others and they all overlap to some degree. The solution is not easy to see, but most people would rather curse the darkness than make the effort to light one candle. IMO

Most places expect you to learn the local language to live there, some places expect it even if you are just visiting for a few days and treat you like scum if you don't (France comes to mind).
