No matter who should pay, I get a kick out of the article itself. The headline would lead people to believe that a plan is already in place to have the dam restored by next summer. Kinda makes you think its a done deal. It's a done deal if you ignore the fact that 1) it needs to start right way 2) they don't know where they are going to get the money 3) they are basing their estimates on the hope that an engineer will agree that part of the dam is structurally sound. This plan is nothing but pie in the sky. It's nothing more than a wish. I guess I just find the whole article a little strange. It does nothing but get people all stirred up about something that might happen if a bunch of assumptions should turn out to be true sometime down the road.

GazetteOnline.com : Free...to a good home renovator

I got a call from my sister in law today and she asked if I had read the above story. She was laughing and mad at the same time. Apparently her house is listed as one of the 6 houses that qualified bidders have offered to buy and move! She has not been notified by anyone from the city about this. She was compensated for her loss by private insurance but she had no idea that the City thinks they own her property and can sell it. She has been maintaining the lawn, etc. I know these things are complicated but come on...selling a house without even telling the owner (or supposed owner who has been taking care of it). I just thought pass that story on.

GazetteOnline.com : Questions of trust, competition arise in light of Mercy’s cancer center announcement

Competition is good. I think common sense tells that if both hospitals try to be all things to all people they are doomed. In the end I think each hospital will "pick" a couple of specialties and then hopefully each will be the leader in their fields. We are truly blessed to have two quality hospitals in CR, one outstanding hospital down the road in IC and a world class facility 3-4 hours north of us. I suspect the scare tactics will start soon. Doctors who back the PCI plan, that may be dead now, will start the rhetoric about them moving on, cost will soar, etc. To me that's just the greed talking. Both the hospitals will be around when all the "stuff" stops being thrown around. There will be quality doctors at each hospital and everything will be fine. Don't get caught up or nervous when the mud slinging starts, and it will. Good luck all.

GazetteOnline.com : Numbers up at new Linn Community Care site

I won't touch the immigration part of this; but I think these type of programs are great in the sense that if this wasn't here all of those people would be receiving treatment at the ER. The ER is the most expensive way to treat people but it's the only option some feel they have. This is a forward thinking program. Sure the government kicks in 700K a year, but they save several multiples of that a year by catching problems early and fixing them. I would much rather have the government spend 700K a year on this program instead of 80 million a day on the wars we are in. Even if this program is treating a few illegal immigrants I'm glad it's here. Ever heard of the saying throwing the baby out with the bath water? Let the pummeling begin.

Marc, Thanks for taking the time to reply. I've seen very few repercussions to reporters who use the 'according to a source' bit. It's a catch all that is abused terribly (by the media in general). I highly doubt if you run your source by your boss and you're wrong that you will be fired, maybe I'm wrong. I do agree with the flame wars, name calling and the like, that gains us nothing. Wild speculations? Who's to say what is wild speculation or an unnamed source? You're being a good sport about this, Thanks again for responding. I'll agree to disagree on this one.

"Iowa running back Brandon Wegher has been absent from the Iowa football camp since Saturday night and his status with the team is uncertain, according to a source." Marc, I see you deleted a post because you said you can't have any rumors here. However isn't what you wrote a rumor? Isn't 'according to a source' just someone that told you what they think is happening, AKA a rumor? Of course I don't know what the guy above wrote and if it was vulgar then it should be deleted. But if he was just 'reporting' what he heard from a source (reliable or not as we don't know if your source is reliable) isn't he doing what you did?

GazetteOnline.com : UI looks to build $70 million backup power plant

$70 million for a BACK UP plant! Wow that sounds really out of line. i understand that the college is like a small city in and of itself but $70 million! Is this a back door way to get a new plant? A m I correct that Iowans, as a whole, will be paying for this since Iowa is a State run school? I think this needs to be looked at again.

GazetteOnline.com : Delaware County ignored pleas for flood insurance plan

I'm glad it's coming to light that the home owners weren't idiots that didn't buy flood insurance, they couldn't get it, at least that is how I understand it. I'm know hindsight is 20/20 and the first reaction is to blame the supervisors. but I am sure there are several sides to this story. The board of supervisors in Delaware county, I'm sure, are dedicated people who thought they were doing the right thing at the time. I would like to say to the home owners, I 'm sorry for your loss. However please keep a level head. It sounds as though Jeff Madlom may be concerned for his safety. Violence is not an answer. And for what it's worth I have no relationship with any of the board members, I don't even live in Delaware county. I am an impartial observer which hopefully makes me unbiased and able to see the whole picture. Good luck, we went through this in 2008 we feel your pain.

GazetteOnline.com : Woman who lost Linn County job after Marion traffic stop was once a police officer

Exactly Owen, it's the petty thinking that so irritates people. Come on pulling some one over for dropping a cigarette butt, really? Then have two additional cars come to help. That just shows how little they have to do with their time. You ask any attorney, that practices criminal law, if kids 25 and under aren't targeted in Marion and Hiawatha. These officers simply don't have enough real police work to do so they pick on the people, younger kids, that they know will not fight them in court later. (granted younger drivers do commit a greater share of traffic problems but that would be profiling which is illegal) I, for one, applaud this guy for not frequenting any of the Marion establishments. Is he alone causing them much pain, no but if more people take up his example then maybe it would work. You don't see AS MUCH pettiness in CR because they are busier. I would like to see a metro police department, one that covers the Marion, CR, Hiawatha area. Think of the money that would be saved and the concerted effort that could be made. But it will never happen because no one wants to give up their kingdom and the cities of Marion and Hiawatha like the revenue generated by these petty tickets and harassments. Even though you ride a Harley, geemoney, you shouldn't be treated like a second class citizen. (That last sentence was humor before people that don't understand start blasting me)

GazetteOnline.com : Cedar Rapids boasts affordable housing, yet still has homeless

The premise of this story is wrong. Now matter how much low income housing you have there will still be homeless people. With that said I'm seeing help wanted signs all over the place lately. Yes they are for entry level, lower paying jobs but they can keep a person in food and housing (apartment), in other words keep them from being homeless. There are always going to be homeless people (by choice), there are always going to be people that need help and low income housing, and there are always going to be people that say they are financially in trouble and need help that do nothing to help themselves. While I think home ownership is a great goal to have, not everyone deserves a house. that thinking is what got us into the trouble we are in today with Freddy and Fannie going broke and costing taxpayers billions because of that thinking. One last thing, Mark Twain, i believe, said something like ' there are lies, darn lies and statistics' take the numbers listed in this story with a big grain of salt.

This new chief's main focus is on revenue. The red lights camera's are about nothing but revenue. The manpower that should be freed up is doing nothing but traffic enforcement, more revenue. I'm all for making a buck and having a government org. pay for itself (in essence) but we pay taxes for a reason, one of them being for the police to protect us. Making money should be secondary to that. Chief I know every officer you put in a park or other troubled area means less revenue, but we want protection first.
