You need to create the custom firmware again. But this time in PwnageTool choose ADVANCED mode and uncheck ACTIVATE THIS iPHONE. Once you do that, iTunes would give you the option of activating it directly via iTunes. Your phone isn't working because it isn't activated and unlocked. Since you have the original SIM from the carrier and are locked to /that/ carrier, you should go to PT and choose advanced mode and UNCHECK 'activate the iPhone'

Are you sure you're putting your iPhone into the correct DFU mode? Correct DFU = blank screen. Are you following PwnageTool to get yourself into DFU mode? If you use PwnageTool, once you're in DFU you'll get a 'success' screen telling you that 'you're IN'

PwnageTool is meant to preserve your BB to the present state..whatever it may be..looks like you may have used TinyUmbrella to upgrade before? To answer your question concisely, if you use the right method PT /will/ save your BB

The best for you would be to downgrade to 3.1.3 and then try re-upgrading. You can get an older original Apple firmware by googling felixburns and download the correct 3.1.3 firmware for iPhone 3G from there. Once you're downgraded to 3.1.3 and you get to the home screen, then create a new IPSW using PwnageTool and follow on screen instructions to put the phone in DFU and restore from an custom fimrware

Now of course it's too late. But I interpreted from your message above that you had successfully jailbroken with jailbreakmedotcom and then installed US. When you opened Cydia, it would have asked you to make your life easier..are you saying you chose NO? If that's the case, then your only option is to get a Mac from a friend or get a 'cooked/custom' firmware that would ensure that the baseband is NOT updated so you can unlock.

You could download an older Apple original/stock firmware by googling felixburns and downloading from that website..make sure it's the older version below 4.0

Dev team wouldn't distribute the official Apple firmware. I don't see it listed in their bittorent. Try googling felixburns and download it from there.

In that case, try an older firmware like 4.0 or 3.1.3 ORIGINAL Apple firmware first and get your phone working again. Then, go back to trying to restore to 4.1 CUSTOM firmware.

Error 9 means there was a problem communicating with the iPhone processor. Force restart iPhone (POWER AND HOME until you see Apple logo - let it go as far as it goes). Then, force your iPhone into DFU mode manually again. Try restoring again. I would suggest using either an original Apple cable or the best cable you have got (preferably not Chinese knockoffs). Use a different slot.

I am assuming you're trying to install 4.1? Since you didn't give that information, I'll just assume you /are/! In which case, you can use Windows iTunes to restore as long as you have the latest custom/cooked 4.1 firmware. Because the iPhone 3G has been pwned before, in an ideal world you may not need to put it in DFU but if that doesn't work, just try DFU - it's not that difficult as you know!

Are you sure you're using saurik's server to "verify" 4.0 or 4.0.1? It should work as long as you had asked Cydia to 'make your life easier'

If you're on AT&T and have an official ATT SIM, you should create a new PT firmware and this time go to expert mode to uncheck ACTIVATE this phone. Then try again. BTW, always use the original Apple cable (no Chinese knockoffs) and use a different USB slot if one doesn't work.

I just restored a friend's 3G to 4.1 with all the *goodies* disabled and it's barely usable! So I would highly suggest against using Mulitasking or BackWallpaper etc on iPhone 3G. The hardware is just too dated - sorry!

Restart Mac. Make sure IPSW is in the same folder as PwnageTool. Choose expert mode and choose your own IPSW. Last but not least, make sure that you've downloaded the stock FW from a safe source.

If you have a factory unlocked iPhone (and you're sure it is factory unlocked) and you don't need an unlock then you can just update to the official 4.1 FW, then use greenpoison to jailbreak. No need to use PT. PT is for people who'd like to preserve their baseband. The exploit is the same in GP, LR or PT

After the restart and just when it says iPhone is now activated, if you leave the phone connected via USB, it may ask to restore the iPhone..however, the restore partition would be from /YOUR/ iPhone. So stop right there when it says iPhone is now activated and hand over the phone to him. At which point, he'll put it in his Windows machine and connect to iTunes and when prompted use the restore function but REMEMBER..the restore we're talking about is to get the email settings, pictures, music and text messages back and not the RESTORE to restore the iPhone to factory state. Cheerios!
