My grandson goes to a well known independent school and through this Covid 19 crisis has not lost one day schooling. All lessons have been online, even morning assembly. A parent has to sign the children on each morning and at the end of the teaching day sign them off. All homework has to be signed off by a parent too. Children of outside key workers were also catered for at my grandson's school when the state schools were shut and cared for by the school teaching assistants. There is no NASWUT at the school as it would destroy the schoo'sl ethics. My reference to Maggie and the NUM was solely on the basis of "If you have a problem you have to face it head on", even if that results in a 'nuclear' outcome. Our children's education is THAT important. Your point of 'but do we need schools as they are currently structured and where they are currently located? ' is very valid and needs discussing when evaluating educational needs going forward.
Surely this government has to act tough on the teaching unions. There are some well inrtended teachers out there who teach for the right reasons and I will feel sorry for them but surely we have almost reached a "Margaret Thatcher v. the NUM" moment with teaching unions !!
