The Average Gamer : X-Blades: Now Featuring Almost-Porn

JudgeFred, dude... there's a happy medium between porn hawt and real life ugly. It's quite wide, in fact. Reaaaaally wide - they're opposite ends of a very big spectrum. It would just be nice to see some hot female leads in games that hit the "wears clothes" section of it more often. Or are you saying that clothes = ugly?

*sigh* I couldn't be bothered to reply this post originally. Reading back on it now I should probably point out that I haven't deleted any of this person's posts. His reference to bishounen is right there on this page.

Hi NGie, Yes, I'm not keen on the whole mankini look either. The point I was referencing was that female protagonists have to be hyper-sexualised in order for men to accept them, while the men are typically set up as masculine ideals, with Arnie-style muscles or ordinary-guy-saves-the-day. Neither ideal acknowledges women as anything other than ancillary. You are quite correct that your examples are very popular with women. OTOH, these are all from Japanese games, and all from one company. The vast majority of games barely acknowledge the female audience at all. Check out The Beauty Myth and Character Design and Debunking the Myth of Frivolity for some longer essays on this.

The Average Gamer : Ion Drum Rocker Review

Well, that's part of the appeal. It's not a plastic drum set. It's metal with cushioned drum pads and pretty much a low-end real electronic drum kit with the added bonus that your non-musician friends can have fun with it too. Plus, no talent and very little practice required ;)

Yeah, it ain't cheap. In the UK it's £230, so over three times the price of a normal set. That being said, I bought my original rock band game second-hand, intending to use it with my guitar hero guitar, so I never had the original drum kit to being with. I used a friend's and the difference is huuuuuuuuge. I suppose it all comes down to how much you enjoy playing the drums :)

The Average Gamer : Prince of Persia Review Part 2 (360)

True, it's pretty repetitive and the Prince doesn't develop skills, so if you're not invested in the story there's not a lot of incentive to continue. That's why I enjoy the fluid movement so much. Iit lets me explore and get on with things without having to reload every 5 minutes like the Tomb Raider Underworld demo. Simplistic combat soon became more of a tedious chore than anything resembling fun. The paths that the Prince can travel are pretty much platforms and cliffs. Depending on the order you played them in, you might not have reached the city levels - it's pretty clear that there used to be normal paths and buildings but they were destroyed by the big evil.

Well said Compass. Sorry to tell you, Fallout 3 is, I believe, even worse. It crashes more often, the interface is even more frustrating and the dialgue option font size is huuuuuuge. I'm waiting for the modding community to step up and fix it. Failing that, I might just buy on PS3 next year since it's clearly designed for the controller and TV.

The Average Gamer : X-Blades: Now Featuring Almost-Porn

jbascetta, please. Stop trying to tell what I'm thinking, on my own blog no less. You tell me that I'm envious of men, and that I'm clueless about my OWN opinion. Then I'm apparently some hate-monger who claims that men are never stereotyped? I said notihing about how men have it easier or that the grass is greener anywhere. "Do your research" was a nice way of saying "Read the goddamn post before posting your standard kneejerk reaction to someone who dislikes your precious T&A hypersexualised wank-pixels." And since I have to spell it out for you, your attempt to "prove" that Jay is indeed the Japanese equivalent of porn-style men is simply laughable because a) as i said, the company is not Japanese nor targeting a Japanese audience, and so are well aware of the cross-cultural standards applied. They don't get a free pass for using anime as inspiration, and b) his character style is not bishounen, it's unambiguously masculine. Sephiroth is bishounen. Go research the definition some more, since you seem to think the term applies to all anime-style men. Jay is a white male everyman who comes to save the woman but is allowed to bypass the hypersexualision applied to Ayumi and most other female game characters, (albeit to a lesser extent). As a heterosexual woman and longtime gamer, it's obvious to me that Jay is barely sexualised at all. Finally, have you forgotten your paragraphs above where, for example, you said "Women are the human equivalent of the male peacock, they have easily identifiable sexual aspects. This is due from thousands of years of natural selection, and men being the mate selector. Mammary show ability to feed the child, hips to facilitate birth." Really? So that is simply your opinion now, and not presented as facts? And you're claiming that I'm using weasel words? Non-lactating breast size has nothing to do with milk production. Do that research too. Find me some proof that back in cave-man days men were the "mate selector" and I might take your opinions more seriously.

Thanks Omen3330. I'm not one to lump people in categories based on superficial features, so no, I don't blame MAN as a gender for wars and violence. As you say, the problem starts when people judge without knowing and stereotypes only promote that.

When we start to just see people as people; individuals shaped by, not defined by cultures, maybe then, we'll be on the way to peace. Until then, I keep my head down and hope ;)

"o u really think many ppl will buy this game just for a girl in a string oh come on guys we can easy look for that stuff on the internet, there are tons of Hentai and porn sites for girls in strings"

Well that's kind of my point. People won't buy this just because the girl is HAWT. This isn't porn, so why dress it up like porn? Why debase the gaming industry further by catering to the lowest common denominator when a little character design tweak could make this game appeal to a larger market of both men and women and help close the gender gap along the way?
