Something I learned a couple weeks in medical school is that even studies published in journals like the NEJM and JAMA have to be critically evaluated to see if the results warrant the conclusion given. Study design is very important in determining the validity of a study, and while I haven't read the study in question here, it does sound like it has some questionable parameters. Why did they use pre-schoolers when SpongeBob isn't targeted to pre-schoolers? Why did they rely on parents' judgment of "normal attention span" instead of having an expert in child psychology do it? What was the subject pool? Have the study's results been replicated? Even well-designed studies that show some result are unable to be duplicated sometimes. Just because a study is "academic" doesn't necessarily mean it was well done and valid, even if it was published. That's not pointing out something good about slavery, that's pointing out something terrible about current society. The emphasis isn't about the state of the black family during slavery, but about the state of the black family now. When you have a neighborhood full of children going up to a man who moved into that neighborhood with his family and asking him if he'll be their dad, because he's the only man in the neighborhood who actually acts like a father, you've got some serious problems (and yes, that's a true story). LOTR is an example of something that is fundamentally conservative but not overtly so. John Nolte's list of the 25 best liberal films is an example of this in the converse - they're liberal, yes, but first they are good, with compelling characters and stories.
