Why can't these black women today do that?" Did a lot of what this man is talking about - got into magnet elementary and junior high school outside of my my neighborhood, used technology, got good grades, developed technical skills, went to a great university and got a technical degree. It was hard as hell, but doable. I'm not mad at this guy, or this piece he wrote, because in many ways he's right. I agree with Obama, too - ignorance IS the biggest problem we face. But the thing about opinion pieces like this is that it focuses on individuals. The ideas presented in "If I were a poor black kid" might help a few folks, but is too narrow in its focus to address the problems of the hundreds of thousand of black kids in this country. The majority of those kids won't get the scholarships - there's limited scholarships available and only so many slots in the schools anyways, and the competition is tough. Many people won't be able to grasp writing code no matter how hard they study - not everybody is wired to think that way. The kids have to want to be helped, yes, and they also have to know that there is help out there. They also have to have to be motivated to even realize that they need help to get what they want, and unfortunately for many this isn't coming from school or home or peers. In my honest opinion, the problem won't even begin to go away until we fix the issues with 1) the breakdown of the basic family structure (absent fathers or grandparents doing the child-rearing), which can help with 2) the home life situation (with a stable family, a child has a greater chance of getting the attention and motivation they need to do well in school and in life, and a reduced risk of poverty and thus access to the tools they need). Then there's 3) the educational gap where poor kids aren't being taught until like 8th grade what kids in better schools started learning in 2nd. And even then, once they make it out of school and into the world, there's 4) the financial understanding gap where many who grew up poor don't understand loan interest rates, the benefits of good credit, compounding interest, passive income, the difference between a stock and a bond, etc. This stuff isn't taught in school really, or least it wasn't in any of my schools. And lastly the cycle of poverty will continue repeat itself in subsequent generations until more blacks learn about 5) the power of generating WEALTH, and passing it on to our children. So many of my non-black peers inherited rental property, businesses, investment accounts or large sums of money to help them get started after graduating high school or college, whereas most of my black peers had gained nothing but debt. No, it shouldn't. A person's moral foundation should, yes, but that is not the same thing as spiritual belief. Spiritual belief is not even necessarily static - a strong Christian today might not even be a Christian at all in 5 years, but a person's core beliefs and morals don't change once established. A relationship between a believe and a non-believer or agnostic can work, if both people are mature enough respect the other's differing beliefs. They can even manage to successfully raise children together. One of the longest surviving marriages I personally know of consist of a spouse who never misses a Sunday at church, teaches the youth ministry, participate in all church outings, etc., while the other spouse steps foot in church maybe twice a year, primarily to please her spouse. Since he had the strong religious belief and she had none, she let him instill his religious beliefs in their children, because she was wise enough to realize it wasn't worth the fight - the children would formulate their own conclusions anyway at some point regardless of how they were raised, just as she did. If you like the guy, date him. If you truly find that you can't get over your spiritual differences, then do what you have to do. But the easiest way to answer that question is to just date him and get to know HIM (and yourself). My high school's senior class theme was "Seems Like You're Ready". Yes, it was based on R. Kelly's song by the same title, and was our theme song on Prom Night. Our valedictorian incorporated some of the lyrics into her graduation ceremony speech. 2. I can recall girls at my high school and the neighboring one knowing when R. Kelly was rumored to be in the area, and how they would plot what they were going to wear in order to try to get his attention in hopes of scoring a date (and all the nasty stuff they'd like to do with the man if they scored said date). One girl who it seemed hadn't been to school in days showed up on the day R. Smelly was supposed to be cruising through, so sadly perhaps he does motivate *some* kids to go to school. 3. Haven't listened to R. Smelly, nor really thought much about him at all, outside of my teenage years. Looks like I outgrew the man in more ways than one ... 4. I lived briefly in NY and the NYC vicinity, and I must say I recall being quite underwhelmed with both NYC's pizza and hotdogs.
