If you have a custom IPSW that is JB w/pwnage, and you restore with that, would you still loose all your cydia apps and other settings?

Thanks - so everytime a new firmware comes out, people have to go through this? I guess the price we pay for jailbreaks. There was another app, that was Mac only - it would patch patch firmware for you on disk (jailbreak it) and then you'd restore with it, rather than require you to jailbreak it "live" on the phone. I forgot what it was but it was by the DevTeam also. How would that work? (Edit: the pwnage tool, Just remembered the name).

I've got a 3G on 3.1.2 and it's jailbroken. I'd like to upgrade to 4.0. Am I reading correctly: Restore through iTunes with official 4.0 and then redsnow it. But what happens to all my previous stuff I did with the phone (all my customizations and other apps I downloaded through Cydia) - do I have to get everything again, i.e. start from ground zero?

I'm pretty sure if the Dev Team knew how to do it permanently, they would have told us. Hang out and let them do their magic, they'll figure it out.

Windows user here. If you've already got a jailbroken 3GS (and it's well within the date to not worry about the tether; SN xxx25...), how do you upgrade to 3.1.2 and preserve the jailbreak? If I update to 3.1.2 I'll loose the existing jailbreak & such, which is no good. I see that the pwnage tool is used to make firmware, which sounds like what I need, but it's not on the Windows platform. Please note: On AT&T, I don't care about the carrier unlock. Do I need to grab a Mac to do this? Or is there a Windows solution available? Thanks all, and thanks to the Dev Team.
