It was a thing.

I remember I was talking to my HS Italian teacher once about how Yiddish words are fun because they sound like what they mean, and I used Verklempt as an example. Her response was "That's a real word? I thought they made it up for that Saturday Night Live sketch..."

My brother worked for a congressman, and he and some other staffer went with him to a breakfast meeting at the Four Seasons. My brother is a picky eater with a temperamental stomach, so he got a $17 yogurt. My family and I were amused and horrified.
