Like many recent trends in cinema, the "shaky-cam" started in advertising. Talented director/camera operators like Leslie Dektor (who filmed this Dockers spot from 1989) brought a new style and energy to TV ads in the 1980's and 90's with moving, hand-held camera work -- which was consequently copied and bastardized by every hack since then who believed you could get the same effect by simply "shaking" and zooming the camera randomly over any scene. And as difficult as it is to properly shoot in that style, it is just as challenging to cut the footage together into a coherent, effective scene. Finding the right cut points requires an editor with considerable skill and experience. When it's done correctly, the audience doesn't even notice the camera is moving, when done incorrectly it's a huge distraction. What have the Romans ever done for us?

Agree 100%. The fact that Nolan wasn't even nominated for directing -- despite the film winning most of the big technical awards -- was a crime against cinema. I liked King's Speech, but it was basically a nicely shot TV movie. The Academy blew it again.

As the great Carlin once mused...

If crime fighters fight crime, and firefighters fight fires, what do freedom fighters fight?

Anything with a Scorsese commentary is gold. He should have another Oscar just for his commentaries. He did a recent one for The Thief of Baghdad that I really dig.

Nothing worse than a bad commentary though... Some introverted director who gets bored or distracted and forgets the mic is on. Or a slightly senile dude that can't finish a story and goes off on unrelated tangents during important scenes.

Here's what I want to know about Dunkin' Donuts...

Do they specifically train their employees to place Boston Cremes upside down in the bag so that the frosting smears off? Or do they have some kind of test when interviewing new applicants and weed out anyone who is smart enough to avoid committing this crime against humanity?

I've seriously considered writing the company a letter to ask them this question.

My knowledge of soccer borders on zero, but I enjoy watching the World Cup when it rolls around.

However, my good friend in London is a life-long fan of the Tottenham Hotspur (What a name!) and after a couple pleasant evenings watching the match over a few pints, I've unofficially adopted them as well.

The fact that they don't even appear in this list only strengthens my superficial, uninformed attachment to this no doubt historic sports franchise.
