My husband is a teacher and does not pay for his own health insurance out of his own pocket. You could make the argument that he pays for it indirectly via lower pay than the private sector. Maybe it is different by district?

What I find ludicrous is that the government sees it fit to protect my lungs in public places that I can CHOOSE to patronize (or not), but not in my own condo where I have little choice in the short term.

Actually this may not be a smart move for Republicans. More births to single mom's could mean more people public aid. I would think that people who rely on public aid probably are going to vote for the candidate that will provide public aid. And since Democrats are the ones who stereotypically are for the aid while Republicans are stereotypically against it (or at least for less), this could mean more votes for the Democrats. Actually, maybe Democrats should think about using this strategy too. Brilliant! PS - Please notice the hint of sarcasm. I am an Independent because I do not appreciate either party.

KCRG : Stressed Families: Keeping It All Together When Income Shrinks | KCRG-TV9 | Cedar Rapids, Iowa News,

Of course saying "No" isn't dramatic, but calling it hearbreaking to say "No" to a cruise is dramatic in my opinion. Now if your child was hungry and you had to say "No" to dinner, I think that warrants the drama of "heartbreaking". I guess we will have to agree to disagree on what exactly is heatrbreading - but it is probably in your kids' best interest to have to say "No" sometimes. I hope for the best for your family's future.

Yes actually you did say it was "heartbreaking" according to KCRG. I copied this from above where they have it in quotation marks indicating a direct quote, but did not indicate which of you said it. Did KCRG make this up then? “It’s heartbreaking when we sit here and the Nickelodeon Cruise (commercial) comes on. ‘Can we do that next summer?’ one will ask and I’m like, ‘probably not’.”

Ya, but "hearbreaking" not being able to go on a cruise. Come on - isn't that just a bit too dramatic? I certainly feel for your need for satisfaction through work though and hope things get better for you soon.

KCRG : Ames High School Sparks Holiday Tree Controversy | KCRG-TV9 | Cedar Rapids, Iowa News, Sports, and W

Interesting article, but I it still doesn't illustrate for me that decorating a tree symbolizes religion. A cross, sure because that is a central belief of Christians. A Nativity scene, sure because it is a central belief of Christians. But a tree? Trees are also symbols of life and fertility in several other religions; government property shouldn't contain trees then correct? The tree is a secular symbol; it represents consumerism, gift-giving, kindness, family, and all of the other emotions and memories this time of year envokes for others. The same as a Snowman or Gingerman might. It does not represent Christ, and my experience is that Christian leaders (Lutheran and Catholic is all I can speak of first hand) would agree. BTW, I see other religious symbols that pop culture uses to represent this "holiday" time of year, and they also envoke feelings of family, gift-giving, etc., not thoughts of religious teachings. These are saved for Advent wreaths and other real symbols of a religion.

Of course even "holiday" is a reference to Holy Day, the time between Christmas and Epiphany. So ironic... Wonder how come no one is offended by that fact. I don't think I can answer that without being offensive :) So anyway, we should probably be calling it a Consumer-Day rather than Holiday.

Well you know "holiday" comes from "holy day", referring to the time between Christmas and Epiphany, right? So ironic.... But really, this is the same point I was making to the hubs last night. A Christmas tree, holiday tree, giving tree whatever symbolizes the commercial aspect, not a religious aspect.
