Big Government : European Central Bank Research Shows that Government Spending Undermines Economic Performance

"...Interestingly, government consumption is consistently detrimental to output growth irrespective of the country sample considered ..." Wow, that's amazing... sure, it's a hundred and sixty-six years late, but they've finally managed to catch up with Bastiat's 'Economic Sophisms'. Give 'em another five years and maybe they'll catch up to 'The Law'! If they still exist, that is. http://oll.libertyfund.org/index.php?option=com_s...

Big Peace : No Need To Fear An Iranian Atlantic Fleet

"No Need To Fear An Iranian Atlantic Fleet" Sensible. It wasn't very sensible to fear al queda getting an air force either. As the one loon told his instructor, landing the planes wasn't a concern. I've no idea what it'd take to put a missle on one of these rust buckets, so that it could shoot up an EMP, or if it was even possible. But. I'm pretty sure that this: "The threat has always and still remains the Persian Gulf itself. " was the sort of thought that was considered very respectable on the morning of 9/11/01. I had kind of hoped it had gone out of fashion since then. Here's my suggestion. First find the dots. Once you've found a few, connect them, but not in a pattern that pleases you, but in a pattern that would please them. And our own old dots, and our favorite patterns for connecting them? Please throw them away. Thank you.

Big Journalism : Dear Harvey Weinstein: I Accept Your Invitation

Poor Harvey. Discovering that words actually mean something is going to be shocking enough, but to also find out that the words of the Constitution were selected for their meaning, and used in order to create something having even more meaning... a meaning which doesn't mean whatever Weinstein wants it to mean... that's gonna mean some serious heartburn. How well does heartburn go with popcorn and butter?

Big Journalism : Ten Years Later: Remembering 9/11

Very well said. "Ten years later that baby is a young boy." Ten years later, and my then young boy is now a young man, and he posted on his fb page today that he is where he is, stationed in the middle east with the USAF, fighting in Afghanistan, because of this day ten years ago when he was 13 yrs old. The politically correct are desperately gasping their last breaths today; they may be loud and hard to ignore, but they will be overwhelmed and snuffed out by those who have seen the truth and refuse to deny or evade it, as the pc are so committed to doing. The young of then, are growing to adulthood now, and they flatly reject the sick lure of pretending evil can be made better by ignoring it. They are fighting back.

Big Hollywood : 'Cowboys and Aliens' Redeems Itself (Kinda) As Left/Right Analogy

Eh. I enjoyed the movie. And you missed the key to the story, which was where Clancy Brown's Preacher character tells Craig "God doesn't care who you were son, he cares who you are." It wasn’t about left & right, but Good and Evil (swap time & place and aliens for dragons and you could manage some decent Beowulf comparisons), and what's valuable, and what isn't. And the rest of it? Call me crazy, but going in to a movie called 'Cowboys and Aliens', I pretty well assumed I wouldn't be seeing Shakespeare and that I'd be seeing some far fetched stuff, so I agreed to suspend disbelief if it was done well. It was done well. Paced well. Exciting and a number of good adrenaline moments. And Olivia Wilde looks pretty darn good stepping naked out of a fire. Definitely a plus... but that wouldn't be enough to recommend it if the movie wasn't good to begin with. It was.

Big Journalism : U of Missouri Epic Fail: No Amount of Context Can Defend Judy Ancel

Well done, well said. And expanding the context even further, I took a look at the wider context of her established beliefs which she has practiced and preached for the last decade, and in that context, it becomes absolutely clear that she very much believes and preaches that violence is a tactic that should never be taken off the table. Ancel was so inspiried by the success (!) of the WTO riots in Seattle, that she had this (and much more) to say: "... this was mainly a U.S. protest, but to succeed in stopping the corporate global agenda, we will have to make this a world-wide movement. Since 1993, I have been working at the grassroots level on such a movement ... “ And she has been working at the grassroots level on spreading such a movement based upon threatening or causing millions of dollars of damage and injury, in order to accomplish her goals. Yeah, in the educated leftie world, violence is absolutely a tactic to be used whenever and wherever possible, and spread directly into as many students minds as she possibly can. On your dime.

Big Hollywood : Anguish of the Apostate: Second Thoughts Are Best

We believe in the limits in executive power set down by the constitution and the checks and balances of government power. We believe in the American worker, the backbone of our society. And above all we believe in new ideas and using them to never grow stagnant in our thinking lest we fall behind on the world scale. " Again, nothing there to argue with, but I suspect as you begin to look into the practices, policies and legislation of the proregressive left, you will find that the "constitution", and "checks and balances" are either "Not worried about" as Rep. Hare mouthed last week, or laughed at as both Rep's Pelosi & Hoyer did earlier in the year, or conveniently interpreting them into some sort of 'living constitution' which turns the constitution into some sort of post modern text to be assigned whetever meaning one likes at the moment ... but I'd like to see more of what you mean by those.

"We believe in education and the world's finest public schools as the cornerstone on which the solution to many problems lay and will fight for this above all until we cannot any longer. " Many of us who have had to deal with 'the world's finest public schools' do not believe they deserve that description, and in fact are the direct cause of the much lamented failure of American education. Again... essays and essay's worth... one quick one, I've got here at What never was and never will be.

"We believe that governments of the people can provide for the people and that a responsible tax policy helps to foster this." Well... that is so generalized that I don't think anyone on the Right could or should argue with it. Unless and until you begin to explain what it is you mean by "can provide for the people"... provide what? And "responsible tax policy" I'm certainly all for that, which version, the Flat Tax? A national sales tax? I'm all for replacing the irresponsible, punitive and unevenly apportioned current Income Tax... what did you have in mind? Or... did you see the current convoluted, massive, loop holed, everyone is guilty of something tax code as ... 'responsible'?

"We believe too in capitalism and free markets but will not allow these to grow to the point of infringing upon the freedom or livelihoods of working Americans." You believe in free markets... but they will not be allowed to grow... some of these words don't go together, some of these words just do not belong. Now perhaps ignoring the fact that it was the progressive movement which initially sought a 'third way' of uniting govt with business, and through regulations and quasi govt associations, made it possible for govt favored businesses to exert Actual power over competitors and individuals, rather than only the economic 'power' of individual choices... ignoring that, and focusing on your statement above, how is it possible for free markets, which by definitions involves only transactions entered into by the voluntary choice of the buyer and seller, how can such a thing in any way infringe upon the freedoms or livelihoods of anyone?
