Well, in my hometown in Vermont, we are planning a march and rally in support of reproductive rights and PP, on July 9! This is kind of a perfect opportunity for, um, synergy, is that what it's called? Anyway, I'll definitely be putting this up on the blog I'm creating for this nascent women's rights group.

Well, I was expecting cookies. Are you saying that you're not going to bake me cookies? Then I'm outta here!

That was sarcasm, in case anyone was wondering.

Bravo! I can tell you that you're going in the right direction, because my parents took a similar tack with me and my siblings, and it's worked out quite well for all of us.

I don't have a pet right now. :(

But I can't wait to read other people's stories! I miss having pets.

My old cat Smokey, before she died, couldn't stand to be picked up and carried--she insisted on riding around perched on my shoulders.

Again--the proper label for how you feel is PRO-CHOICE.

"I would never dream of stopping someone from getting a termination but I personally feel uncomfortable with abortion so I can’t call myself pro choice."

THAT IS THE DEFINITION OF PRO-CHOICE.

That's why allowing anti-choice misogynists to set the terms of the debate is so toxic. You have well-meaning people thinking that they're not part of the movement because, golly gee whillikers, who doesn't like life? I mean, I'm not pro-death, right?

Fuck you. You're actually pro-choice, but for some reason you want to provide some cover to the misogynists who dominate the pro-life movement. Until you come to your senses and realize that the proper label for your position ("I don't like abortions but I don't think laws are effective at preventing them") is PRO-CHOICE, I really don't think you're going to be much use to anyone. Forgive my strong reaction, but really, it takes a great deal of stupidity to willingly assume the label "pro-life" when your positions don't align with the priorities of that political movement in the least. Get a clue, goddamnit.

Yep, it does sound a lot like property rights--which is also, not coincidentally, how the rights of women were defined vis-a-vis men up until very recently. I.e., rape was not an offense against a woman, but rather an offense against her husband or father, because it deprived him of the rights to his property.

Brava! Thank you for taking a stand on this issue. Ever since reading Alice Miller at the tender age of 17, I have thought that hitting children is a scourge on humanity, and a cause of a great many societal problems. Imagine what changes would be possible were we to raise a generation of children who had a firm belief in the inviolability of their own body, who knew from experience that violence is never justified and does not solve problems. The APA has said that spanking is not only not helpful, it is counterproductive and can lead to behavioral problems later in childhood. I do not believe that it's a coincidence that the states which allow corporal punishment by schoolteachers are also the states with the lowest levels of academic achievement.

Oh, pardon me for confusing a person who makes excuses for bigots with an actual bigot. Subtle difference, you know.
