Being that I'm in the "need an unlock now" camp, my hope would be that they have different unlocks and that one could be used now while saving the other for a future FW release. I suppose I know where DevTeam stands on this issue, but judging by Geohot's much different approach to unlocking/jailbreaking I'm not sure what he'll end up doing. I'm eager to see what happens, if anything, either way...

In the post there's a pasted IRC dialogue between MuscleNerd and Geohot where the latter acknowledges having discovered an exploit, or "hash" has he says, and the two discuss trying to determine whether or not they actually have the same hack in hand. Haven't heard or read much beyond this particular blog post. Would be curious to know if anything else has been said. But fair enough - appreciate the reply.

I can see that you're here extremely often and that you do indeed read every single post. I know this because you seem to copy and paste a post along the lines of "there's no unlock coming out anytime soon. you're going to have to wait several months." Why do you need to keep repeating this post when someone could simply look at any other thread and find it there? With regard to what I posted, if you'll go back and actually read it, it wasn't a list of 5 or 6 claimed unlocks. It was a question, posed to you guys (the better-informed community of iPhone hackers that peruse forums like this daily and frequently), asking if you knew who this individual was who was claiming that he had an unlock. The "list" you're referring to were tweets that he made with regard to his unlock. I didn't intend for my post to amount to 59 replies. I won't be held accountable for the fact that many people want to jump to conclusions and misinterpret my post to mean that I myself am advertising a guaranteed unlock. This was not the case. I consider myself one of the patient few who made a mistake, so I won't take responsibility for or accept being grouped with the vast majority who seem to be demanding an unlock (most often in broken english, an in a babbling fashion). Your post read as follows: "Where is Vagus09 ?? He was the one flaunting all these "claimed" jailbreak & unlock tools" Was it supposed to be a call-out? What kind of response were you looking for? I just don't get it. I didn't find the reply helpful, only sarcastic and irritating.

Look man, quite frankly, I don't know what your problem is anymore. You're acting as though I took a personal stab at you directly and you're mistaken. Also, I don't really care to comment on who or who hasn't contributed to this community, etc. You're knocking Geohot, but in my limited time here, I know him as the guy who allowed me to use my phone on 05.11.07 - and for that, I am pretty thankful. Perhaps you've given tons of positive, encouraging, helpful advice to others in the past. Maybe you believe that's what you're doing now. But I don't see it that way and that's my own opinion. I'm sorry if that bothers you. I've learned a decent amount debating on this topic. You seem to know a lot of about the history of the iPhone hacking community. But that doesn't change my stance on releasing new unlocks. My beliefs are obviously different than yours. Accept it and move on.

I think you guys need to give it a rest. I was given my phone as a birthday present before I came abroad for studies not more than a month ago. I'm sorry, but you're starting to beat a dead horse. This was a very expensive gift, and something I rely on quite heavily for communication with friends and family. I think I speak for others in a similar situation when I say that no amount of "told ya so's" or "you'll know better next time" or "you're in the minority so have patience" will appease us or make us feel good about helping others out in the community in the future. Whether you've been in our shoes before or not, please offer helpful commentary or none at all. There are others (Musclenerd, Sherif, etc) who've shown they're capable of this benevolence and understanding. Try following their lead.

I think we can both agree that this back and forth has become futile. In my mind what this ultimately comes down to is one group of people having to wait. Either us 3.1.3'ers will have to wait 4-5 months to be able to use our phones again, or those looking forward to 4.0 will have to wait for a 4.0 unlock before they can upgrade. In the former group are people who can't actually use their phones. In the latter are those who will simply have to exercise patience before they can get their hands on new features. Been nice discussing this with you all. Hoping for the best.

Believe me, I understand all of your points. But using your logic, why did Geohot release a 05.11.07 unlock for 3.1.2? Wasn't it possible, at that time, that people were anticipating the next release to be the big 4.0? All those in your camp continue to use the "only so many holes available" argument, but hasn't unlocking been happening since the phone was released over 2 years ago? Sherif finds an exploit in one week, yet the majority of you think this could be one of the last ones available? C'mon. Even if this exploit were to be released in an unlock, there are many months remaining to keep looking for new ones - as he's already said he plans to do. I acknowledge your arguments, but frankly, I don't see them as any better than my own...

What you've proposed is not really a "what if" scenario, because I can take measures to ensure that I don't find myself in that position. Do I now know to backup my SHSH's? Yes. Am I going to let my phone update without being extra cautious? No. I can acknowledge where you're coming from. But let's get something straight - I'm not "begging" for an unlock that doesn't exist. A week ago when I realized I had locked myself out I didn't come to any forums crying or begging for an unlock. I understood that it would be a while before someone would work on one, and perhaps no one ever would. I accepted that as a consequence. But now, it's clear that an unlock could be available. Do you have any idea how hard it is to sit idly by and listen to people try to persuade me and others that we should still be patient and wait 5+ months? Give me a break. Put yourself in our shoes.

See my points elsewhere. But to reiterate, I believe it would be naive to assume that Apple doesn't have internal people also perusing these forums and simultaneously attempting to break their latest modem firmware. Hell, the mere fact that there's all this buzz about a hack will surely compel them to work even harder in finding and closing it, whether or not the Dev Team chooses to employ it in a new unlock! Many more people will be affected if 4.0 rolls around and there's no unlock for it or for 3.1.3 still available...

Points taken. But in my opinion, it would also be absurd to assume that the Dev Team can simply hold on to this exploit for 4-6 months! You don't think Apple has folks internally trying to break the new baseband and revisions? It's everyone else against them, and that won't change. What happens when 4.0 is released and they themselves have patched this hole - it'll be completely useless, thereby screwing the 3.1.3'ers AND the new 4.0 people. What would be so bad about releasing this unlock, and continuing to look for additional holes in the coming months? Am I wrong?

An exploit in the baseband that came with 3.1.3 (05.12.01) has been discovered and passed along to the Dev Team. It will be their decision whether to release it soon or to keep it secret until the next major OS release. I believe I'm in the same boat as you, and hope they release it sooner rather than later.

I understand your point, but in megadeath's defense, holding out for a big update would not bring the most amount of good to the most amount of people. Perpetuating a rivalry is great, but not at the expense of neglecting the central purpose of this device, and the importance of this purpose to just as many millions of people. I sympathize with your concern man, but don't think it's fair of you to argue that fighting the "The Man" should take precedent over the people out there begging for help so that they can again use their phones. It's people like the Dev Team and Sherif that are able to make such miracles possible, while others like you (who presumably have working phones) continue spread negative opinions against those who actually could use help now.
