Daily Camera.com: : Concern in Lafayette over loss of commercial space, city\'s economic future - Boulder Daily Camera

Folks do realize that that whole area has been pretty dead, commercially, for quite some time - can't really blame the church for that. Perhaps the good citizens of Lafayette should frequent their local businesses more than point fingers. As for the traffic issues, that's only sporadically before and after services, as people come to the church, or are leaving.

Daily Camera.com: : Dionne: The culture of preconception - Boulder Daily Camera

The mother is an individual. Judge JP had a whole rant against "them" and all "those" people who come over here or are not loving all we do for them, etc. She was basically using the mother as a stand in for the entire Islamic world. As for Judge JP on the mother, at one point she took one sound bite and said in effect that the "woman doesn't care about her sons" while at other times it's clear the mother is full of grief. Yeah, the mother may blame America for her one son's death and her whole world view is skewed, but she's clearly devastated by what happened to her sons. As for the mother not connecting the dots with the violence her sons did, well, welcome to the real 3rd world where death and violence is a daily occurrence - that's the difference between us and say Israel or Iraq (or Chechnya). Here a bombing shuts down a major city, but more violent acts happen frequently in Israel, Iraq and other places, and life just goes on - which is just as sad a commentary on how normalized people become to violence. Still it's much better to be an American and subjected to what those 2 kids did than be somewhere else and have Uncle Sam and the full force of American might come raining down on you. I think Judge JP is an excellent example of what EJ Dionne was talking about here.

Wow, I wonder how she got to the top of her soap box? It's incredibly high, though not as high as her holier than though attitude. I love her use of "they this, they that" etc. Big old bad bogeymen out there. And she doesn't want to show the rest of the world how our society works? Nah, they already know by our military interventionism in support of corporate profits. Why don't the Iraqis love us for bring democracy to their country, oh wait, we killed hundreds of thousands of civilians, displaced millions, and stole billions from them. Yeah, democracy is messy. It's one thing not to have too much sympathy for a mother in shock over losing her sons, but to make her the subject and fall person for her own personal rant, well Judge JP, you're just as bad.

She meets a guy and it's 12 inches, by the time they get married it's 7 inches, and when all is said and done, it's 1-3" and no one's happy.
Pro Bike Race disaster, now that gives us warm fuzzies that the City Council will do it right with a Muni and I don't see much difference with running the utility here because people, via their vote, "demanded the City do for financial reasons and because it was cool..." When our electric bill starts rising out of control and I have to spend a lot more than I am now, that is "my money" they are playing with. As for the City Council being different, yes the players are different, though no more qualified.

Boulder City Council running a Muni - these are the same folks that left Crossroads Mall to wither for how many years then brought us 29th Street. I do love their Pollyanna view of a rosy future that they'll be able to anticipate all possible risks and mitigate them. Heck, they can run Boulder as a part-time council, why not a muni? Hubris. Easy to do when you're playing with other people's money.

Here's a piece by the New Yorker that muddies the water a bit more: http://www.newyorker.com/online/blogs/comment/201... I recall being incredibly disappointed during the Obama's first administration and the whole Healthcare reform bill (Obamacare) when Obama, before even starting out, abandoned the universal option (bit fuzzy on the specifics at the moment and don't have the time to go back to them). The two things that galled me the most wasn't that he had to give it up, but that one, he didn't try and, worst, claimed he never campaigned on it - when you could still go to his campaign website and see it listed. It wasn't that he lied, it was a bold lie with proof to the contrary, directed at his own supporters! So I don't sleep well with Obama's signing statement. Add the New Yorker analysis to AG Holder's dance at his confirmation hearing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uGQQOyzWen4 Again, it's not like today we are going to run into issues with Obama assassinating or holding a US citizen here (I don't think), but in 5 years, 10 years? We are sliding down the slippery slope. Cruz to me does represent a bit of irony, because I don't think he'd question Holder so strongly, if at all, if it were a nominee of a Republican president and many hardcore right wing Republicans will be more than happy to have one of their own (presidents) try out some of these laws. I use to hope that under W that some of his supporters, would not back him, because many of his policies were antithetical to some long standing republican positions (no debt comes to mind), but they never did. I don't imagine that Obama's own supporters would hold him accountable for violation of our liberties (and the argument that we need allow it for the "defense" of our country comes straight out of the GOP playbook for the last 30 plus years). I'll defer to Mark Twain who said: When you find yourself on the side of the majority, it's time to stop and reconsider.

JS, I appreciate your open-mindedness as well and respect your position. My issue with the NDAA is with this little beauty "indefinite detention of American citizens without due process at the discretion of the President." Ahhhh, no thank you. What's the point of fighting for our freedoms if we just give them up? I'm also disturbed by the fact that the AG Eric Holder thinks it would be constitutional for the president to order a military drone strike against an American citizen on US soil, without trial, and according to his confirmation hearings, even if that person posed no immediate threat. One can ease their minds with Obama at the helm (unless you're a Republican) but can you imagine someone like Rick Santorum with that power?

The thing is, I've been going to the church for about 7 months and not once have they preached against Gay Marriage. If you look at what Jim wrote on his Facebook page, he said "you don't have to defend Jesus and you don't have to attack gay marriage." I've never once heard him attack any single person or group of people in any of his sermons. As far as his take on the what Jesus said, I disagree with his interpretation, though I'm not surprised by it. What I am surprised by is that I actually agree with Chief Justice Roberts who ripped on the political cowardice of the Obama administration for back pedaling on the government's equal protection argument on gay marriage. For what it's worth, I voted for Obama, even though I disagree with many of the things he's done like back pedaling on the above article and signing the NDAA at the end of 2011. I was particularly disturbed by how he used his Nobel Peace Prize to justify the need for war (seemed a bit out of place :) Yet do I throw the baby out with the bath water? By the same token, I disagree with Jim on gay marriage, that at the end of the day, marriage in the United States in 2013 is not about religion, it's about civil and financial rights of committed adults in a relationship that rises above just living together in a civil union. But Jim's message on Jesus and the impact Jesus can have on an individual's life is spot on. He also is very clear that a person's relationship with Jesus is between that person and Jesus. He's also said that our sins are already forgiven - so gays living together or getting married are no less likely to get into heaven than anyone else. So will I use a somewhat expected biblical interpretation on gay marriage to abandon FC? No. Am I disappointed. A bit. Will I feel cowed at the church and not express my opinion on this? No. I know if I spoke to either Jim or Scott, and I have on a couple of occasions, they wouldn't feel the need to change your mind. Literally they are "come and see." They trust Jesus to do the rest and in Jesus's timeframe, not their own. I guess the thing of it is, there isn't the intolerance in preaching or interactions that commenters here, who've never been to the church, seem to think there is. If there was, I wouldn't go (seriously, I have much more of a Vajrayana Buddhist background then Christian).

Similar to all the Obama Stickers I see on cars around Boulder. Even Chief Justice Roberts is hammering on Obama for being a moral coward for backing down on their case (from CNN): Verrilli took a peculiar position in the Prop 8 case. He focused on the eight states, including California, that have civil unions that offer gays and lesbians equivalent rights to marriage. Verrilli said those states violated the equal protection clause, because the only reason they denied same-sex couples the word "marriage" had to be out of hostility toward them. But, as Roberts knew, this was a political tightrope walk for the administration. The eight states were largely blue, and they probably wouldn't mind giving couples full same-sex marriage rights at this point. But the states that don't allow civil unions are red, and they would resent Obama trying to impose same-sex marriage on them. So Obama backed off on that political challenge, and Roberts noticed. "Is it the position of the United States that same-sex marriage is not required throughout the country?" the chief justice asked Verrilli, who hedged in response. "You're saying it's got to happen right now in California," Roberts went on, "but you don't even have a position about whether it's required in the rest of the country." The chief's contempt was palpable. ------ Must be proud to be a Democrat for gay marriage. (not saying you are or aren't a Democrat, but there are many in Boulder and there president is backing down on this issue).

what he says is that everybody sins, including himself, and that being gay probably isn't the biggest sin there is. What he does preach a lot about is Jesus. And that we are all forgiven because Jesus died for our sins and (being Easter and all) that he rose from the dead as proof. All the other stuff, is trying to help people live a happier, fuller life and let Jesus be your guide. He even says it's not for him to tell you what Jesus says to you or tells you want to do. That is between you and Jesus and God and Jim actually has said that he has no special authority in that. I'm curious, did you take your son to some other church? If you believe Jesus dies for sins, it's no reason not to attend church for what one person says.

It's one thing to disagree, even strongly, with the church, but it's another to make up lies: "hates gay people" Does Flatiron hate gay people?
People are bashing Jim, yet his position is no different than yours "Everybody has fallen short of the Glory of God (that's sin), everybody is dependent upon Jesus for grace and Flatirons will never single out one sin as worse than any other sin... " I know many other churches love to point out the sins of others as if they themselves are pure - that's not something Jim has ever done and he's the first to raise his hand in church to talk about his own failings and sins.

Divorced isn't preached against at Flatirons, and in fact as recently as 3 weeks ago that subject specifically came up. Scott Nickell's own parents are divorced and remarried and allowed to be part of the church (and he tells of his mother's story of being ostracized in other churches in the south as he was growing up because she was divorced.) There are also biblical verses from Moses to Jesus that allow for divorce. One story used was of the Sumerian woman at the well who was married 5 times and currently living with a man not her husband. Jesus never condemned her, only said that she was looking for something that a man would never be able to give her. On the other hand they don't encourage or advocate divorce as an easy way out. And if you've ever talked with anyone who's been married and either thought of getting divorced or gotten divorce, divorce isn't a happy thing. Personally I disagree with Flatirons on the issue of gay marriage, and individuals should be afforded the same civil protection under the law as any other citizen of this country.
