I agree wholeheartedly with (almost) everything in the article. But, we must remember that many of those who do not pay income tax do pay NI, and their employers pay NI on top, which to a certain extent is a tax, and impinges on what those people get in their pockets. The problem with NI is that especially for the low paid, it seems good value for money, as it appears to cover the NHS and possibly benefits in times of need, and they don't see it as a tax at all, rather as the Insurance that is the I in NI.
I always thought it was stupid to take so many people out of income tax altogether, but frankly, for pay of less than £6k I think that even 10% (Sea_Warrior) is a bit draconian. I'd personally like to see rates of 5, 10 etc .

You may have a point - but my take on it is that the Euro elections are simply message, and have no Pro-May connotations. I think that it is unlikely that the conservatives will increase the number of seats held, and in the ones they do, the majority will be slashed. There isn't a snowball's chance in hell that May will have anything to crow about from the local elections. But remember this: if LD - the 'Remain' Party - win extra seats then they will take it as an affirmation that the populace has changed their minds on Brexit.

There's a certain amount of silliness going on here. The May elections are for local government, not parliament. If you are, or have been, a conservative activist you should still vote conservative. It's not your councillors who have let us/you down, it's the Government and Parliament. Vote any other way? Sure, if you don't like your conservative-led council, or like what the opposition have done in power, but the local elections aren't free of risk that you give another party a foothold.

The time to register a protest is at the Euro elections. Like many conservative activists I shall be voting for the Brexit Party - this is the way to register a protest in a way that won't impact much on the country but will send a loud and clear message to Teresa May, the same way it did to Cameron.

You should also stay in the party and let your vote count in deselecting remainer parliamentary candidates. By all means refuse to campaign for the 'wrong sort'.But making the local government elections the medium for your message is not the best way forwards.

And what happened to Island Roads on the A3055 Undercliff Drive, may I ask? Had a bit of a disaster there, didn't we? (But to be fair, most of the road resurfacing is beautiful, and a step up from the 'tar and gravel' surface-dressing that was long a standard solution. Some other Authorities could learn from this.

I suppose a Macunian Trading Estate might be a good investment, better than an Icelandic Bank, I suppose. And for Nick_Portsmouth, where do you get 2.5% on a good ISA? The hope, I suppose, is for Capital Gains.

The Commons works well on a FPTP system because, with a few exceptions, it does not lead to coalitions. The HoL as a revising chamber could easily run on a proportional voting system, with a much smaller contingent (they have no constituency duties) and then you could redress some of the inconsistencies, e.g. LD have only 12 MPs, but a bigger share of the popular vote (and I detest the LDs!) and UKIP get 4million votes and no MPs. We already have a system (the one used to elect MEPs) which we could use to elect Lords.

How much did it cost, and what did it achieve? Answer to the first: a lot. Answer to the second: not much - if anything.

Well they didn't want someone who actually knows something about the problem. DOn't ask how I know.
