I thought it was the best episode (up to that point) of the year, probably the last two seasons! It was on par with Rarity episodes from seasons 1 and 2... again, up to the point where they felt the need to introduce a fat character just to make fun of. I think it stung so much BECAUSE it was this show. Something like the Simpsons, Family Guy, etc... I wouldn't bat an eye. But this is the show that's supposed to be setting positive examples for little girls, and they went this direction with it? The thing is, there are so few overweight characters in the show, that it really stands out when one makes an appearance. And when that appearance is, "I'm late to fashion, I want what's unpopular now, and even Rarity doesn't have a dress that looks good on me"... yeah, it's gonna stick with kids, even in only subconsciously. Four other ponies entered that shop, same scenarioand got their perfect gowns pointed out to them, and got to model them; an overweight pony enters the shop, is told "No Princess Dress!"... and they laugh. She's not given the opportunity to model a dress of her own... so what's the CONTEXT here? "Nobody wants to see a fat pony in a dress." That's the message. That's the takeaway from this scene. It reinforces this idea that's pushed onto young girls that you can't be attractive if you're fat. If what you were saying is true, she could better have been written in as a pony liking one of the other dresses, because her boyfriend at the cloud factory would love it on her, or something to that effect. (Also, there was a great post a few days ago about subjectivity and objectivity; you should read it if you haven't. In my opinion, the episodes have lacked any of the warmth and character that was present in the first few seasons. But today's episode was the first in a long, long... LOOOOONG time where I felt that specialness in watching; a Rarity episode that washed the taste of Inspiration Manifestation out of my mouth, and felt worthy of inclusion with Suited For Success and Sweet And Elite as one of the all-time great fashion pony episodes! My pessimism was turning around, I was enjoying the show again, Rarity was singing and... ... and My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic just went full mean-girl, and fat-shamed someone. I'm speechless. I'm sitting here like somebody just slapped me, in a frickin' state of shock. After watching it again four or five times to see if I was missing something there, I'm now so disgusted I can't even look at any of my pony merch; it's all going into a box into the closet for a while. There was zero excuse for that, as any other pony could have set Rarity and Heroin-pone up for their "No more Princess Dresses!" line... literally, ANY other pony. But instead they introduce a new character that is overweight, with a bad mane-cut, that is the punchline for the joke. So remember kids, you can get pretty new dresses if you're a valley girl, or a goth, or wear glasses even... but if you're overweight, then tough luck, we're going to laugh at you now, hahaha.
