I've thought about this a lot since my granddaughter started watching cartoons. Looney Tunes and Hanna Barbera made cartoons that had humans and talking animals, yet the plots and subtext were geared toward an adult. There are many things that I saw or heard in them that made me want to read and find out what they meant. A lot of the pop culture references of the 40s and 50s I could ask Mom. She told me most of them, others I figured out later. Cartoons now are written from the perspective of a kid talking to a kid. I see some teaching tools in them, but the hilarity and zaniness are lacking. The ones the do have more action are just stupid. I don't think it was the violence that got Bugs pulled from the air, it was him treating us like adults that was their problem.

Hank, there's a video of a bunch of musicians from around the globe, all playing the same song. I saw it on Youtube but can't remember the song. I watched it the first time with the volume off. What I noticed was that despite the different locations of the artists, they all had the basically the same look in their hair, dress and mannerisms. I thought to myself that they probably all consider themselves to be really edgy and individualists. But when looked at from the perspective of their peers, they were all mere conformists.

Hollywood, like the music industry, newspapers and magazines before them has not yet grasped that with all the neat electronic gadgets and technology available to the general public, they will soon be not necessary for producing and marketing a great movie. They no longer market flics to my demographic so it's no surprise that I don't go to a theater anymore. But they run the risk of losing the next generation of moviegoers amidst all the choices available for entertainment, and the technologies that we haven't even though of, that may be just around the corner.

I guess I'm showing my age. I saw Paul Frees in a Betty Davis movie the other night called The Star. I'd never seen it before but as soon as I heard Frees voice I knew who he was. That was the first time I'd ever seen the face behind the voice. Quite a treat.

Actually, Chris, I'll bet it really sucks for real animated voice actors since all the big named actors have taken over what was once the realm of those less "screen worthy" but talented nonetheless. Hollywood types are always harping on injustices in every facet of American life except their own world where they'll stomp on a "fellow guild brother or sister" to get a gig. I don't need a "star" to do a voice. Give me a Mel Blanc, Paul Frees or June Foray any day!

Pat, I started doing that about 10 years ago with Tim & Susan Sarandon. It wasn't even a conscious effort. I really enjoyed them as actors but it got to the point where I would see them on screen and instead of the script, I'd be hearing their political rants that aired on the news. The only new movies I see are either Indy or foreign, where I have no idea who the actors are. The term Hollywood Star is really overdone. There are some great actors and directors out there in small budget flics.

What's lost on The Academy is that they and the rest of Hollywood have no problem with Cohen making a mockery of any event in America, especially when the participants might not know what he's doing.
