The Wiire : GoldenEye 007 Wii Screens and Trailer

I stoked but how did the lawyers work this one out? Owned by Nintendo, developed by Rare (now Microsoft), the James Bond license, ...weird. It was awesome watching the trailer and recognising old locations, subtly different.

The Wiire : Nintendo: Apple is "Enemy of the Future"

Sure, Ian. But I still can't find where you explain why you're using quote marks for something that isn't quoting anyone, or any sort of examination of whether Apple really IS eating Nintendo's lunch. I think your article is drawing together a few unrelated things to fit a false narrative. Matt C was hired by Apple? Crunchgear has anecdotes about their iPhone use? Is there no room for iPods now the iPhone is out?

This is a microtransaction based game. You can buy additional logs for 100 Nintendo points. A Poker costs 500. The online co-op is its strongest feature.

Got to call you on this. Quote marks in the title make it seem like it was a statement made by Iwata. It wasn't. It was a journalist 'understanding' what Iwata is rumoured to have said, it isn't even explicitly sourced. The Times used to be a newspaper you could somewhat rely on, but its coverage is going increasingly downmarket and it should not be relied on. I'd have much preferred you guys to have written an article critiquing what the Times is reporting. I.e. Apple's market share has mostly come at the expense of Sony. Iwata has repeatedly said he doesn't consider Apple to be a threat.

Interesting article: another nice side effect of reusing the Wii's many peripherals is the vendor lock in! Next generation, when looking at an upgrade, you can get the PS4, YBox or Super Wii. If you pick Super Wii, you can reuse your balance board, your controllers, your zapper, your Wiispeak, your Vitality sensor and your USB waffle iron. Or you can buy it all over again for a different console- which do you think will be more attractive?

I've seen this suggested a few times, and I still don't understand the logic. Instead of giving Nintendo money for a Wii AND DS, you'd just buy the next gen once? Nintendo like halving their profit?

The Wiire : Sony: Publishers Leaving Wii For PS3, Wii Has Few "Innovative New IP"

You haven't played NSMBW, then? You are using your amazing gift of psychic computing to predict how unoriginal it was. You list 3 Nintendo games in your playlist, and presumably use them as evidence for being uninnovative: WSR, Wii Fit, and Mario Galaxy. It's a bizzare charge to make against those games. Galaxy didn't add anything new to 3D mario? The gravity? The motion controls? The pointer? Wii Fit wasn't a completely new type of game? WSR had been seen before? I find it hard to understand the originality in Assassin's Creed (which I have played). At best, it is an extension or mix of two already common game mechanics.

The Wiire : Wii Loses Another Exclusive, de Blob 2 Going Multiplatform

You guys really need to get a proper stock shot of "de Blob" rather than that prototype/iPhone one you always seem to use. It does a disservice to the game. This generation is funny. Here you have a shining example of a Wii 3rd party success, which has made enough money and been good enough for THQ to expand its platforms for a sequel. There are a few things to note: 1) this is portrayed in a negative light, rather than given as an example of a rare success. 2) THQ are taking a 'casual' franchise onto the 'hardcore' consoles - exactly what most commentators claim is a doomed strategy when the roles are reversed - yet there is nothing but silence from the usual suspects (I do not include the Wiire in this). 3)This actually makes me nervous that de Blob 2 on Wii will be compromised, such is the contempt for the platform and its customers that developers and publishers have shown in the past.

The Wiire : Analyst: Nintendo Must "Immediately" Cut Wii Price To $150

I'm not sure I agree with you. Firstly, re: SEGA toning down their Wii releases - recently a SEGA studio director called "Constantine Hantzopoulos" appeared on the 1up podcast and talked a bit about Wii sales of M-rated stuff. It was his personal opinion, but quotes were cut'n'pasted and it was blown out of all proportion. This isn't strong evidence of SEGA scaling back Wii releases - you are conflating M-rated with every game, and the opinion of one guy with the entire SEGA corp! What other studios have said more concrete things? High Voltage are delivering on Wii all that they ever said they would. If they were dropping the Grinder, and whatever Gladiator AD (Breakfast of Champions?) is called now, then you would have a point. Regarding point #2. I don't think the average consumer HAS to be brand heavy to be reluctant to buy a console for a game similar to one they already have. WILL Natal be so different? Will I not be making tennis or golf or bowling motions with my arm, whether I am holding something or not? Do you think the general consumer will differentiate with and without a remote, or do you think Natal programmers will not use the natural actions translating to avatar actions on screen??

ARE developers fleeing from the Wii? What developers ever committed to the Wii in the first place? What software is going to make Joe and Jane Public pick up Natal / Arc? Wii Sports has fufilled a niche, so a hypothetical Avatar Sports or Arc Sports would have to be pretty damn good to encourage a new console purchase.

Another unflattering way of interpreting this is that Sony's first party efforts are largely failing this generation. Despite huge critical appreciation, Uncharted lived up to its name, Heavenly Sword committed hari kari and Ratchet and Clank sank. When you consider that Uncharted 2, despite topping practically every game of the year list known to man, barely outsold Wii Music and is selling less than Animal Crossing - both titles which were considered a sales failure by the wider public - it is clear that the Sony of yesteryear had a much better grasp of what the buying public wanted, or at least that its weakness was cloaked by enormous install bases.

The Wiire : Developers Retreating From Wii

I think the danger of the iPhone/iPod touch/iPad to Nintendo's handhelds is over emphasised. Too expensive, too fragile, and Apple don't produce their own 1st party games. The attention they get is totally resting on their ubiquity with the demographic who write about computer games. I can see them cutting somewhat into the handheld market, simply because if you have an iPhone there is less incentive for you to then buy a DS. They're competing for pocket space, and the iPhone wins because... well... its a phone. It isn't a particularly good gaming device, although there are excellent games that recognise its limitations and design accordingly.
