Big Government : RICO Statutes: Good Enough for the Mob, Good Enough for #OccupyWallStreet

The outrageous demands of OWS underscore the fact that for many of the "protesters" it was merely an excuse to engage in rowdy, anti-social behavior, and in many cases, a pattern of relatively minor criminal behavior. But in certain venues, most prominently I suppose in Oakland, there is no question that the "movement" was nothing more than thin cover for significant numbers of participants to engage in repeated and serious criminal acts, including violent criminal acts. The Occupy "leadership" did absolutely nothing to either control or mitigate such rampant criminal behavior. Undertaking RICO prosecution would seem to be an appropriate response in such instances. It is one thing to poke fun at the movement -- http://trochilustales.blogspot.com/2012/02/occupy... -- as many of us have done and will continue to do. But while that might eventually help with public opinion, it will not stop or even slow down their hard-core thugs. A determined prosecution or two, however, might work to stem some of the more violent tendencies of those repeated criminals in their midst. Mark my words, once the weather turns they'll be back as the handmaidens of the left in their determined effort to continue the social upheaval, at least up through the election in the fall. They are not going to self-police from within.

Big Peace : Hot Air v Big Peace On The USS Enterprise Story

There are several other commenters firing away, too. One other tool box showed up to try and make the laughable case that this was sexual harassment, but he got beat up pretty badly and retreated. Most recently, some self righteous priss (who suspiciously claimed to have served on the USS Forrestal during Viet-Nam) posted a comment demanding that Capt. Owen Honors to be subjected to court martial and stripped of his commission, then dishonorably discharged, and lose all benefits. But it won't take long to eviscerate a clown like him! In fact, it'll be a pleasure!

Before y'all start making too many generalizations about the kerfuffle over at HotAir, or in particular start casting aspersions on Ed Morrissey, I think you’r missing the point. We’ve got a damn good fight going on. Tee-tee fire, but nothing we can't handle. Hell, Ed may eventually try to re-think his position. He did update, noting: "Many of the former shipmates of Honors are rallying to his defense." You know, it's not too often that I take big issue with Ed. He just happens to be flat-out dead wrong on this one! That’s all. I personally thought Ed was specifically wrong on one or two of his initial points in his post (the graf in this post, above) and so I said so. Here: http://hotair.com/archives/2011/01/04/video-navy-...

Well said, General! Well said! That was one for the ages -- 66 years ago, and it still brings a smile to our faces, and tears to our eyes. ps. to the earlier commenter who asked (obviously in jest) if that was an "Obama" symbol on the General's hat, please do not joke about such things! That's Airborne, my friend, the 101st Airborne Division. He was the temporary commander of the entire 101st Airborne, as General Maxwell Taylor was away at the time. Temporary command had fallen to McAuliffe, as he was the artillery commander of the 101st.

According to an article in the Daily Mail the reply was not "Nuts," but a four letter expletive that was changed for propaganda purposes for domestic consumption[citation needed]. But that was not the case, according to Vincent Vicari, McAuliffe's personal aide, who was there at the time. As quoted by Richard Pyle of the Associated Press Dec. 12, 2004, Vicari said, "General Mac was the only general I ever knew who did not use profane language. 'Nuts' was part of his normal vocabulary." . . . .

According to various accounts from those present, when McAuliffe was told of the German demand for surrender he said "nuts". At a loss for an official reply, Lt. Col. Harry Kinnard suggested that his first remark summed up the situation well, which was agreed to by the others. The official reply: "To the German Commander, NUTS!, The American Commander" was typed and delivered by Colonel Joseph Harper, commanding the 327th Glider Infantry, and his S-3, Major Alvin Jones, to the German delegation. Harper offered an explanation of the meaning of the word to the Germans, telling them that in "plain English" it meant "Go to hell."[1] (more below)

One reason she is doing this is because, as you will recall, she initially insisted that the Tea Party participants were all nothing but "astroturf." That made her look completely foolish.
Big Government : Saturday Open Thread: Greene Edition

So, Gen'l Gates was truly the dishonorable one, and at arguably one of the most crucial moments in our history. Moreover it was not the last time he tried (and failed) to undermine Washington. Now, I won't attempt to argue away Gates' accomplishment at Saratoga, but your pathetic attempt to try to diminish the honor or the courage of Nathaniel Greene, based on some idle historical speculation, is disgraceful. Incidentally, after Saratoga he again tried and failed to undermine Washington. Once the war turned south, he was the failed commander at the disastrous Battle of Camden (SC) during which, Horatio Gates personally fled the field, thoroughly dishonoring himself, and causing the end of his career as a field commander. Washington gave his command to Nathanael Greene.

That, Mr. Snide, was treachery! Unfortunately for him, the members of the Continental Congress had fled for Baltimore, fearing the British troops would march into Philadelphia, and Washington famously crossed the Delaware on Christmas Day night, and on to victory at Trenton, and then Princeton a mere one week later. Henry Knox had engineered the actual crossing, and Sullivan and Nathaniel Greene, successfully led the attack.

Gates was deliberately dilatory in marching his troops down to the Pennsylvania stronghold, south of Corryell's Crossing until just after his "co-conspirator," Gen'l Charles Lee had foolishly been captured by the British in mid-December in New Jersey. And when Gates then marched his 500 or so troops into the camp -- following Lee's troops who were promptly and ably marched in by Gen'l Sullivan -- he then promptly refused Washington's entreaties to command the troops at the Christmas Crossing. Instead, Gates lied to Washington, feigning illness and the need for rest. He thereupon headed south for Philadelphia, plotting instead to meet with key members of the Continental Congress in order to convince them to put him in charge of the Continental Army, usurping the command of Washington!

Incidentally, the commenter above whose annoyingly snide "contribution" consisted of a personal attack on Nathanael Greene for his supposed breach of honor with respect to Gen'l Gates (who he cites as the hero of Saratoga) might well consider that when it came to breaches of honor that really mattered, few could match the singular lack of honor on the part of Gen'l Gates, just prior the crucial Battle of Trenton.

This battle was one of the last major engagements in the north during the American Revolutionary War, and the result was to bring to an end British military aspirations in New Jersey. Given the fact that New Jersey lay between the cities of New York – the British stronghold throughout the war -- and our capitol in Philadelphia, this battle was obviously critical in helping define the eventual outcome of our struggle for independence. A salute indeed to Revolutionary War hero, Nathanael Greene!

The other great contribution by Nathanael Greene in New Jersey was in the summer of 1980 at the Battle of Springfield on June 23, 1780, the so-called "Forgotten Victory," in which Gen'l Greene who commanded 1,500 troops, who were backed up by a substantial number of New Jersey Militia troops. They succeeded in preventing 6,000 British, Loyalist and Hessian troops from pushing through and taking Hobart Gap, resulting in the British and Hessians deciding to retreat back to Staten Island. They took time, of course to burn down the village of Springfield (except for the Loyalist homes) but they were defeated.

General Sullivan lead his troops down the road (now called Sullivan's Way) and along a river roadway to hit the Hessian occupiers from the river side, while Green was entrusted by Washington with leading the more difficult march along Upper Ferry Road, to Scotch Road and then down Pennington Road to hit the occupiers with Knox's Artillery from the northern heights above Trenton. The artillery shot which resulted in the killing of Colonel Rall from that point proved critical to demoralizing the Hessian defenders, and winning the day. Because of the extreme stormy weather, many of the side arms were unable to fire, leading to the so-called Washington admonition to attack the enemy instead with bayonets. The firing capacity of the artillery was more readily protectable.

Here in New Jersey, Nathanael Greene will always be particularly remembered for two great contributions to the American Revolutionary cause. The first was at the true turning point Battles of Trenton and Princeton, in particular with his leadership on that first engagement at Trenton. On the early morning of December 26th, along the snow-laden overnight march to the British cantonment at Trenton, when the troops reached the crossroads at Birmingham (West Trenton, today) and held their final Council of War, the 2,400 troops, as had been planned, split in two.

Poor Jim Hansen, had to admit his error, and as you can see, he did so in a very sarcastic and defensive manner, claiming it was due to a "mixup" in NOAA data. A "mulligan" if you will. In light of the recent revelations from the e-mails, I note with particular interest his one comment from that e-mail back then: Said Hansen back then: "Hmm, I am not very good at magic tricks." Ha!
