"Fear is the foundation of most governments; but it is so sordid and brutal a passion, and renders men in whose breasts it predominates so stupid and miserable, that Americans will not be likely to approve of any political institution which is founded on it. " John Adams, Thoughts on Government, 1776

"No taxes can be devised which are not more or less inconvenient and unpleasant. " George Washington, Farewell Address, September 19, 1796 "The basis of our political systems is the right of the people to make and to alter their Constitutions of Government. But the Constitution which at any time exists, 'till changed by an explicit and authentic act of the whole People is sacredly obligatory upon all. " -George Washington, Farewell Address, September 19, 1796 "Your love of liberty — your respect for the laws — your habits of industry — and your practice of the moral and religious obligations, are the strongest claims to national and individual happiness." George Washington, letter to the Residents of Boston, October 27, 1789

I think products would last longer. Our wants as consumers are quickly becoming second to the compliance with incredible amounts of regulation and rules that almost every industry has to endure in order to manufacture and sell products. They probably can't use materials that would be more durable and cheaper due to one enviromental concern or another....

Well I do think that the government needs to make sure that healthy competition is taking place, which is why I support anti-trust laws. I agree, that really was a terrible way for Bush to exit office, admitting that he is abandoning the principles he believes in. What a shame...

I understand your point, I guess in my mind if you disregard the principles that the constitution was founded upon than you aren't really defending it, you are simply seeking to manipulate it into conforming with your agenda. I mean if you asked yourself whether or not the New Deal, the Fed, and other progressive programs (auto bailouts, cap and trade) fell in line with the principles of the constitution even if they weren't expressely forbidden by the constitution, you would be making a very tough case. But if it helps to clarify, than sure, we are defending the principles upon which the constitution was created.

I disagree. The founders were terrified of an unchecked government without limits. That type of limitless goverment was precisely what they were escaping from. The idea of governement having the power to do whatever it "feels necessary" had nearly destroyed the world. No, they carefully and purposefully sought to limit governement as much as possible. It was considered a "necessary evil". What I think you are misunderstanding is that the founders did indeed want to give us the ability to change the constitution if it ever became necessary. So they set up a process where by ammendments could be added. But the system of adding ammedments, which has been much needed over the decades, is a lot different than a constitution that can be freely interpreted, and by consequence freely misinterpreted.

The problem you present simply is an example of the imperfection of written words. The founders worked furiously to create a language in the constitution that would cultivate a set of principles, which is really what the constitution is meant to do. It doesn't outline every single aspect of governement, it sets forth a framework and a premise. But words by themselves can be redefined, challenged, misinterpreted, twisted and manipulated. So if our soul purpose is to look at these words and make them fit our own agenda, it isn't hard to do. But once we start to understand the hands the penned the words, their experiences, and their intent, the words they wrote become much less ambigous. Once you read the words guided by the principles that the founders intended for those words to embody, it starts to become crystal clear. And so when we defend the constitution, we aren't just defending its words, we are defending everything that it embodies.

Glenn Beck - The 912 Project : Vent

But surely there is a point where some interpretations clearly fall outside what can be considered a reasonable interpretation of the constitution. Progressives regularly admit that they want the ability to redifine the constitution, that is a "breathable" document, capable of being interpreted differently at different times... So there is a big differences in believing that we need to adhere to and defend the constitution as it was intended to be interpreted (but then disagreeing on such interpretations), and feeling like the constitution can be changed, manipulated, redefined, dismissed, or rewritten....

So in response to your quesiton, there is definitely room to disagree about some of the specifics of the constitution, but the problem I fear is a complete dismissal of the principles that guided and united all of the founders and that embody the spirit of the constitution- individual liberty, limited government, checks and balances, policies that are dictated by the voice of the people (not the will of elite politicians), etc... Once we start trying to redefine the founding principles, then we surely cannot be successful in defending the Constitution.

I think there were certain principles that guided the founding fathers in the creation of the constitution. Because of these principles, although they disagreed on the means, they were fairly unified in the end. For example, they disagreed about how to divide the power between the federal and state governements, but all agreed that government needed to be limited. They all agreed that the government needed to fear the people, not the other way around. They all came from the experience of a tyrannical government which was a driving motivation in the creation of a government that would always be kept in check. They all agreed that individual rights trumpted the ability for the government to force anything upon the people for "the greater good". They all believed in checks and balances and they all feared the abuse of power.

That is fine, it is your right to do so. Although, I would prefer to hear a well-reasoned rebuttle to the points I made instead of just reaffirmation of where you stand. Do you not believe that the consequence of higher tax rates that I have laid out actually exist? Or do you just not believe that there are severe enough to outweigh whatever benefits you see by raising taxes?

fortherecordabc, I have not seen all your posts, obviously, but from what I have seen it does not appear that you are very willing to listen to what people have to say here. I don't see you trying to reach middle ground, or ever conceding on points that we can all agree on. If you are, perhaps I am jsut missing those posts. Just remember that it runs both ways when you accuse everyone here of not tolerating your view point.
