There are secrets. The fact that this SEO consultant doesn't want to say or reveal doesn't mean they are not there.

The same secrets that work on Google do NOT work on Bing or Yahoo. Those two engines historically have responded well to a very different set of circumstances.

I have many hundreds of keywords in the top 10, but very few in the number 1 position. My number 1 positions don't happen by accident particularly against other seo teams. Most seo guys can get you into the top 10 for competition of 2-5 million competing pages, but very few seo guys can break into the top 3 without using secrets or 6-12 months of very dull tedious work ( from experience, most clients don't want to pay 12 months of contract fees for something where there is no obvious visible movement for months.

The truth is that the cost should be comparative to the amount of work required. Doing a free competitive analysis gives one an idea of whether there are 200 serious competitors or 50,000.

Depending on how serious the competition is, one has to also decipher whether that competition arrived in the top 5 by age and user satisfaction or via number of back-links, or whether it is a social network spawning hundreds of new pages daily, will to a large degree determine how difficult the job will be.

The difficulty of the job will dictate the number of hours required and hence a better estimate of how much the job will take to do.

MarC, you have a point, quite a strong one too. However, if you can't get the customers to the front door, the fact that you are literally giving away platinum and diamonds on the inside, is lost to the very customers who would have died to get their hands on your products and services.

In theory, thats where the seo comes into play, it is just to get them to the front door. What happens next is or should be in the realm of sem ( search engine marketing )

An interesting discussion, but those not altogether familiar with it should note that hundreds of one way links from PR0 or PR1 pages may not equal one single link from a PR0 page sitting on a PR9 website.

So, how many thousands of wasted hours are spent researching and implementing strategies that garner tens if not hundreds of **near worthless** one way links from sites that are averaging PR2 and pages which themselves are frequently PR0 or not even indexed, lol. Further, many of these one way links are on pages that already have 20-30 links or more ( which means - the number of links divided by the page Rank is frequently less than .0001 and this miniscule .0001 is the benefit which is being sent forward )

There must be balance and the answer is not always to go there and simply buy one way links.

Nice comment Scott. Just as an aside - nice comment about using wordpress as a blog. All wordpress themes are not equal in the eyes of the search engines. Some which are created to be seo friendly by correct use of css, will put the valuable user generated content as high on the page as possible ( Very search engine friendly ) while other templates are more interested in aesthetics than anything else.

Though I am not a big fan yet, I noticed that most Joomla templates do this correctly right from the \"get go\".

And I would second what Bruce just mentioned by saying, if you are an online marketer without an autoresponder in place to talk to your customer base on an ongoing basis, then you are really not effectively marketing at all. So, the 'attraction marketing" proposal may be new to the traditional network marketing group but it is most certainly "old hat" to the online marketers. Giving value to your potential client prior to getting them to commit is the whole basis of online marketing.

Hire yourself directly out to the client via rentacoder.com or guru.com etc. There is an arbitration process there that serves to protect both the writer and client. The downside is that the middleman both takes a 4-15% of the deal and the middleman sometimes pays only twice a month ( which many companies do anyway). If you can live with those business compromises - some would say simply the cost of doing business - then outsourcing via these third parties might just be the way to go. I nearly always have writing jobs available on rentacoder, if you can write well and at high speed on almost any researched health or business topic then I might have some work for you. Good luck

I would add to that, that if you are blogging for backlinks, use sites that do not use the nofollow tag as much as possible and if you are blogging for traffic ignore that and seek high traffic blogs with controversial topic titles in your market segment. Sometimes being amongst the first to blog comment can have significant traffic benefits particularly if the blog uses the plugin which checks your own blog for the last comments/posts in your own rss feed.

The truth about the metatags mentioned in the article above is that some search engines have stated publicly that due to the potential for spam like activity, they ignore some or all metatags. One of these is Google. David, I agree with you 100%, yet its interesting that Google still has the form there for newbies, and that also means that while they might/may put new data coming from their own form into a non-prioritized queue, it would seem a little contrary for them to give an option then penalize for using it.
