Scott Granneman's Classes : The final video project: a guide

Screencasts using Quick Time X have been so easy and you can't beat the price--I already owned it! Just drag the film to iMovie and let the real fun begin.

.Pandora keeps getting better!!! Love it. iPhone, computer, Roku, FB...now I need Pandora for the car? ( I suppose I could play Pandora through my iphone while in my car, but I would still like to see it built in to the car's system.)

***Please be aware that recordings of radio streams, may NOT be legal, we recommend that you investegate your local laws, before using TheLastRipper*** This is taken form the bottom of TheLastRipper home page page linked above. Unfortunately I wont have an opportunity to piss off the feds because when I tried to download the program I got this: (No OS X 10.5 leopard support, sorry). I'll check back from time to time. Too bad, sounds like a great feature.

Okay, Last.fm has potential as it's easy to start up and the audioscrobbler is a nifty feature. Within 5 minuted I was playing the music I already own via their service. As for usefulness, unless I start to social network my music--something not planned for anytime soon--I might as well allow iTunes to continue to manage it. Nevertheless, the day may come when I'll want to share my eclectic and crappy taste in tunes with the world.

Scott Granneman's Classes : Sorry, there’s no easy way of putting this: Lala Sucks

Yuck. I linked Lala with my Facebook account and it appears that none of my friends have chosen to use this service--at least through Facebook. Furthermore, when learning about a new service, particularly one that wants me to toss money at them, I appreciate an easy access, full-on tutorial explaining how thing work. Didn't see one. All in all, this service is confusing and lacks potential for day-to-day enjoyment.

Scott Granneman's Classes : Pandora Usage Stats Prove It’s iPhone’s Killer App

In addition to Pandora branching out via the iPhone, any day now they will have a channel through Roku. Roku is a device that allows live streaming of the Netflix instant-view options, via the internet, directly to your TV!!! The HD compatable device costs $100 and will allow you to watch over 20,000 instant Netflix choices for as little as 9 bucks a month. Soon, I will be able to use my Pandora account through my television. As long as Pandora keeps finding ways to diversify the way in which their listeners' can enjoy the service, their long-term success is more likely.

Scott Granneman's Classes : Who Has The Most Photos Of Them All? Hint: It Is Not Facebook

No surprise for me that IS outscores FB in the picture game. I've taken two photojournalism classes at wustl and IS was always the preferred media for sharing . I think the draw, for me anyway, is the purist format--it's all about the images. Facebooking and such may be more inclusive than most would like and IS offers a venue for photo sharing without the perceived obligation to post status updates and comment on surveys.

Scott Granneman's Classes : What are the lessons of MMORPGs today?

Does Raph live in the deep Montana forest in a cabin where he blogs peices of his manifesto from next to his bomb-making equipment? To a nongamer, like myself, statements like "killing is the only real way to gain people's attention" freak me out! And it's a shame that strawberries are never in season in his world.

Scott Granneman's Classes : Why More Men in Tights Won the Whole Donut

In #4 Moore writes, "... the ’secret’ of WoW’s success is that it’s quests are rewarding enough (through quest xp) that you actually do them." To me this is a key selling point. To often, and even on my iPhone--damn you Bloons, It doesn't take me long to get to a point were I can't progress in a game. I lose interest and never play again. Of course, I'm still looking for a challenge but the long term playability, for me, rests on being able to progress in the game without putting the rest of my life on hold in order to do so.

Second Life. I talked to a virtual monkey, Bob, and he told me that he can reproduce. Earlier on I was interested in how virtual worlds may provide social service resources; Second Life has a world for people with mental or physical disabilities or those living with chronic disease or illness. I look forward to exploring this world more.

Scott Granneman's Classes : Double Agents

In reply to BMay's desire for social psychology research what you see among these examples is what social psychologist describe as the development of the social self--specifically our possible selves. Our self-concepts include not only our self-schemas about who we currently are, they also include who we might become--our possible selves. Such possible selves motivate us with specific goals for a vision of the life we long for.

Scott Granneman's Classes : Chasing the dream

The author writes that, "Game players, it turned out, were no more aggressive than the control group." This is contradictory to the research I have come across related to violence and certain video games. Craig Anderson (2003) and Anderson and others (2004) offers statistical digests of three dozen available studies that reveal five consistent effects. Playing violent video games more than playing nonviolent video games increases arousal (heart rate and blood pressure), increases aggressive thinking, increases aggressive feelings, increases aggressive behaviors, and decreases prosocial behaviors. Moreover, the more violent the games played, the bigger the effects. Nevertheless, the authors summarize by stating that, "practicing violence breeds, rather than releases violence." More research is needed.

Scott Granneman's Classes : Who plays MUAs?

I think this article is a nice survey of the gamer types. I would like to see it go a step further and explore how types related to the real world attributes of the gamer. For example, would a gamer's personality type determined by the Meyers-Briggs coincide with their gaming personality type? Or do people take on different and/or complementary personality traits when interacting within MUAs. (By the way, I suspect that I would socializer. No big surprise.)
